  • England edge out Scotland 1-0 at Wembley in May 1973 to win the Home International Championship. Two 1966 heroes link up for the only goal as Martin Peters heads in Alan Ball's free-kick, although it takes an excellent save by Peter Shilton to deny Kenny Dalglish a Scottish equaliser. It is England's second win against the Scots in 1973, having also beaten them in a friendly match at Hampden Park in February.

These Home Internationals were a distraction for England, especially games against Scotland. For Scotland, playing England is still the highlight of their season. Whereas England's intensity and aggression should be reserved for qualifiers and finals.

Amazing to think that Peter Shilton would still be England’s goalkeeper at the World Cup Finals at Italia 90 ......... seventeen years later.

I think Shilton was the best British Goalkeeper I ever saw, and that save from Dalglish is one of the reasons why. I watched the game live and I was three feet in the air shouting goal when he unbelievably turned it round the post.

Yes this was the 1973 Home Championship match between England and Scotland at Wembley with the latter determined to avenge the humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of the former in Scotland's centennial match at Hampden just three months earlier.
But this match would forever be remembered for the sole goal scored by the late Martin Peters who was wearing the number 11shirt who out of no where ghosted in the winner.
Yes of the three West Ham connection that won England the 1966 World Cup at Wembley on 30 July 1966 only Sir Geoff Hurst is the only survivor.RIP Martin Peters.

THIS WAS THE 1973 HOME CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH BETWEEN SCOTLAND AND ENGLAND AT WEMBLEY.IT CAME BARELY THREE MONTHS AFTER SCOTLAND WERE HUMILIATED 5-0 BY ENGLAND AT HAMPDEN PARK TO CELEBRATE THE CENTENARY OF THE BIRTH OF THE SCOTTISH FA.
THAT VALENTINE'S DAY HUMILIATION MEANT THAT THE VISITORS WERE HELL BENT ON AVENGING THAT HUMILIATING DEFEAT AND THEY HAD THE CHANCE TO DO THAT AT WEMBLEY.
AS FOR ENGLAND THEY WERE ON THE VERGE OF PLAYING POLAND AT KATOWICE IN A MUST WIN WORLD CUP QUALIFIER AND ALSO THE FRIENDLY WITH CZECHOSLOVAKIA IN PRAQUE BEFORE THAT.
THE VISITORS HAD SEVERAL CHANCES TO SCORE AND THE MOST VITAL MISS CAME WHEN PETER LORIMER BROKE THROUGH AND SENT IN A POWERFUL SHOT ONLY FOR PETER SHILTON TO MAKE A MIRACULOUS SAVE.
BUT THE SCOTS BADLY HIT BY INJURIES TO A FEW KEY PLAYERS HAD TO BITE THE DUST.MARTIN PETERS OUT OF NO WHERE GHOSTED IN THE WINNER.
IT WAS IN THIS MATCH THAT MIDFIELDER ALAN BALL,ONE OF THE THREE 1966 WORLD CUP SURVIVORS WAS ATTACKED BY A SCOTTISH FAN.

In a day and age where hotels are being accused of being racist, prejudiced and bigoted by some zealots for not suppling shampoos which suit Afro-America or Aboriginal hair, everybody has to think twice about what they say. "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will now have be Snow White and the Seven Little People." "Big Friendly Giant will now be Big Friendly Genetically Abnormally Enlarged Person."
