Congress could EASILY solve the drug price problem. Simply pass one law prohibiting domestic sales of any FDA approved product at less than the average selling price in the EU, India, Mexico, Canada....make a long list.
Or, charge an excise tax of 200% of that price difference, and make it available as rebates to US customers.
It really isn't hard to force polite behavior--unless you are a politician who really us getting paid off by big pharma.
And balancing the many federal endorsed or federal programs in general: cut the ineffective programs or reduce its spending
Or big anybody.
Sadly, the price of drugs in the US has a LOT to do with the fact that America is a far more litigious society than any EU country. We sue whenever an outcome doesn't meet our expectations, no matter the actual cause. And medical issues are one of the top areas of litigation. This is why insurance is so high for doctors and hospitals (and, in turn, a big reason why their prices are so high). EVERY interaction with the American medical system -- whether it be a hospital stay, a lab test, a doctor visit, or a prescription -- has an extra cost to cover the cases where things don't go a patient's way and they sue for big bucks. Since American juries are made up of citizens who have already been trained to suspect "big pharma" or "big medical" to be out for money rather than patient care (often by slanted "news" coverage but also from the minority of cases that are actually the result of malpractice), lawsuits tend to end in oversized awards to the plaintiffs. The countries in the EU aren't like that, both because of laws limiting this as well as their culture. If you get a cold in America, you demand antibiotics from the doctor. In the EU, your doctor sends you home to rest in bed. Most end-of-life care in the US is extremely expensive and most likely to fail to meet patient's demands (you're dying after all), whereas in the EU they simply tell you to be glad you lived as long as you did and send you home. The top two trains American health care is so expensive in general are (1) we sue for everything, and (2) we have horrible diets and health practices in our daily lives. Neither of these are the government's fault or the medical community's fault -- they are OUR fault. But no one will listen to you or your "news" station of you dare remind Americans of that.
