    Primal Rage is a bit of a power hog. You should be checking and adjusting voltage when reading on the PCB chips, not at the power supply itself. Also, it’s never a good idea to power up a game after installing a new power supply with the PCB connected. Disconnect the PCB, power it up, adjust the voltage to a good baseline, reconnect the PCB, and fine tune it using the aforementioned method. This is important in case you make a mistake when swapping wires over and because you don’t what the voltage is set to on the new supply. Great job on the monitor rebuild. Keep an eye on the brightness/focus drift as that’s the most common failure mode of the flybacks on these Neotecs. For the video interface, just add a ground from the monitor frame to the power supply ground. Should clear that right up.

      Thanks, Mike! Maybe I didn’t show it in the video, but I did adjust the power supply to around 5v before connecting the game PCB. The monitor frame is already grounded - I just reconfirmed this by testing good continuity between the monitor frame and the power supply. I think the game PCB itself is producing the inference, since I don’t see it when my TPG is connected in the cabinet.

      Copy. Well try running a ground directly from the PCB ground to the monitor frame and/or the power supply. It’s definitely a video ground issue.

      Update! I just hooked up a different monitor (powered by my portable isolated power supply) and the interference is gone! So maybe there’s a ground loop or something I need to find and remove?

    • @MikesArcadeMonitorRepair
      @MikesArcadeMonitorRepair Месяц назад

      Yup.

      @overtimearcade  Месяц назад

      Ok, in Primal Rage, earth ground comes in from the main power cord and hits a distribution block connecting the monitor, power supply, and marquee. If I disconnect the monitor from this distribution block, the interference goes away. But it doesn’t seem safe to run the monitor without being grounded… right?

    I have a Primal Rage PCB and for the longest time had trouble powering it on for my SuperGun. Eventually I just got a Meanwell Power Supply that uses a negative -5v and haven’t had any issues with power since. Thats without a cab though, but half of PR issues are usually caused by it being a power hog thanks to its sound board. So make sure to always use a beefy Power Supply with Rage.

      Yup, I’ve heard that Primal Rage was a bit of a power hog. With help from Mike’s Amateur Arcade Monitor repair, I put the old power supply back in, removed the connection grounding the monitor frame, and the interference issues are now gone!

    In the arcade I used to manage, when we got Primal Rage in new, our company got us these big white cabinets that were big screen and had the control panel away from the monitor some, eventually we turned them into other games but they started as Primal rage.

      Oh yeah, those “showcase cabinets” were enormous!

    The video issue could be a ground loop issue. If the arcade machine is plugged into a power strip with other stuff try unplugging the other stuff and see if the issue goes away.

    • @overtimearcade
      @overtimearcade  Месяц назад

      Thanks - I do suspect it could be some kind of grounding issue, but I just tried it on a dedicated circuit by itself and the interference pattern remains.

    Charlie, I have never heard of that PSU brand and it's probably crap, I only use Mean Well or HAPP PSUs, try one of those to see if it's helps. Also the video cable is the most likely issue of the interference. Try moving it around when it's on and see if the interference changes, right now it's right next to the AC wires. Lastly disconnect power to the marquee to see if that's the issue with the interference, if the starter is running all the time(especially since the marquee is out) that can cause a lot of interference. Thanks for the mention, I'm over 4K subs now!

      @overtimearcade  Месяц назад

      Thanks, buddy - and CONGRATS on 4K!
      I’ll try the things you mentioned tonight. In the meantime, I put the old power supply back in and the interference is back the way it was before - still visible but not nearly as bad as with the new power supply.

    • @overtimearcade
      @overtimearcade  Месяц назад +1

      Ok, I’ve confirmed it’s not the video cable or marquee. 😕

    Measure voltage on the board(wiring/connection losses) 🫣 Did the old PSU have a 5v adjustable pot ? We used a lock strap and washer to increase the length of the PSU.

    • @overtimearcade
      @overtimearcade  Месяц назад +1

      Yep, the old PSU was adjustable too. I actually put the old PSU back in, removed the connection grounding the monitor frame, and the interference is now gone!

    Love this game. Friend has good taste. If I walk in and see the same crappy games at the arcade. I walk out. If arcades don’t learn this. They sadly will all go the way of the dinosaur.

      Yeah, I think a public arcade needs a good mix of super popular hits for casual fans, plus some deep cuts for us die-hards!

      @@overtimearcade True good to have some Popular games but again if that is all you have. I am leaving :) Cause you come across them too much. Rather play games I haven't experienced or seen.

      When I bring non-enthusiast friends to a barcade, they always laugh when I geek out over something like Atari Fire Truck or Bally Sente Chicken Shift. 😂

    • @overtimearcade
      @overtimearcade  Месяц назад

      There was always moderate interference with the old power supply, both before and after the cap kit. But it’s got pretty heavy interference with the new power supply.

    Always wanted an arcade unit, but watching technical stuff going into fixing it makes my head spin. Not good with all that technical stuff. Admire how you are able to do it.

    • @overtimearcade
      @overtimearcade  Месяц назад

      Everybody starts somewhere! I'm no electronics engineer or anything like that, but I started by watching a TON of RUclips videos about people fixing this stuff. Then the first game I bought was mostly working, and I was able to practice with some simple tuning & tweaking before taking on bigger projects. YOU CAN DO IT!
