  • I have Horsetail (Mare's Tail) in my garden. It's both a blessing and a curse. I actually rather like it. It's a living fossil and that's pretty cool. On the other hand, it's incredibly invasive. - DO NOT PLANT IT!

Just keep on top of it every two weeks during spring and summer without fail, removing as much of the deep root as possible

I wish it were as easy as you make it sound. :( Maybe in softer soils it is? Where I am though it's all very heavy clay and I don't have a hope of digging it out. I've been put on to SBK Brushwood killer and that does seem to be doing /something/, it takes a while after applying but the stems are yellowing and falling over. I think I'll keep on with this for now, keep re-applying and make sure to get it on there early spring like you say. Someone else said to try WD-40, which I did last year and it definitely knocked the stems back, but didn't seem to have much long-term effect. Hopefully the SBK will weaken the roots too.

They are a NIGHTMARE! They could survive Chernobyl

They really are, and I suspect nuclear fallout would only make them stronger! :D

we have this COVERING the entire front of my house and have tried EVERYTHING to get rid of it and nothing has worked so we just gave up....it is now about 3-4 feet tall and I cringe every time I look at it. If yall have figured out some magic way to kill it, help a girl out

Fire seems to work ok? I mean it won't kill it, but it did seem to knock it back as I recall. Though as with most things on horsetail I think it helps to bash it about a bit first to break the waxy skin. I'd also say to make sure the burner you get is a butane-propane mix, not just the butane. That way you get a very hot blue flame and not an unwieldy yellow one. The keyword is "EN417" which is the style of screw-on connector for the canisters. Hope that helps, and good luck. We'll both need it. ;)

Some lad called Jim in Scotland says wd40 sorts it. It’s on RUclips

@@badarticle9132 I've heard that from a couple of people now, am trying it this year. I've been breaking the stems and using the straw to spray a tiny bit inside. Still not entirely comfortable with using wd-40 on the garden but I'll see how it goes. I'll have a look for Jim, I don't suppose you have a link at all? 🙂

This a night mare I've got this between all my paving flags I seen some man on you tube and he uses WD40 I'm going to try that.

I've been trying it out too, seems to be doing the trick so far. I've been twisting them off about an inch from the ground and using the straw to squirt a little down into the stem. Results so far have been positive. I'll try to video it. 🙂

    Try SBK with Kplus.
Needs 3 rounds back-to-back, 6 weeks apart between March & October growing season.
    See www.ProGreen.co.uk.
SBK is an auxin based weedkiller.

Thanks, will give it a go. I think I have some SBK somewhere, not sure what Kplus is though. Will look into it. I've also been recommended to try WD-40 which I gave a go last year. I broke the stems and used the straw to fill up the little cavity inside avoiding getting it anywhere else as I can't imagine it's very friendly to soil life. Results look good so far though.

Try WD40 it gets rid of them.

Really?? Huh. I'll look into it, though to be honest I am wondering about the environmental impact of spraying WD40 on the garden. Fire seems to knock them back but does nothing for the roots. :/

@@dankendell What you need is ammonium sulphamate, no longer sold as a weed killer due to EU regulations. But still available for sale as a compost accelerator mix it with a little washing up liquid its excellent at breaking down everything in the compost heap. Just make sure you don't trip over on the way to the compost heap and spill it on those nasty horsetails, that would be tragic 😉
Edit: after using ammonium sulphamate you can't plant anything for 3 months but it breaks down into a harmless soil fertiliser giving the soil a good boost after the 12 week wait.

Yep, it's what I use.... Paul, did you try any other degreaser type of spray? I ask as I'm getting through 5ltr per month and at £20 a time it's not cheap!
