  • in this episode of my allotment blog we start to tackle the mares tail / horse tail with a weed killer from pro green called Kurtail Evo. From the reviews online and what else i have read, hopefully this will get rid of the weed for good (or at least for a while)

Unfortunately since uploading this video the heavens have opened and most probably washed away all the Kurtail Evo I sprayed onto the plot earlier. I will be checking it tomorrow to see if any of it got taken in by the plants but I am not holding out much hope. Anyways my question for all of you is, have you used Kurtail Evo or Gold before and if so how well did it work for you?

Realise this is a year old but FYI you can usually adjust the end of the sprayer to get a mist rather than a jet for applying weed killer etc

Have you been in touch with Green Pro to see whether their product needs to be applied for several years? I'm doubtful anything will get rid of Horsetail after one season of application... I've tried an over-the-counter product called Job Done (Path) which uses glyphosate to kill the rhizomes applied to horsetail in a neighbours garden to prevent it spreading into my garden. After 3-8 days the shoots turned brown. I've applied twice and will try to get a third treatment done before the end of September. (If we can get a dry patch - like you my first attempt was scuppered by heavy rain.) My expectations is that the roots in the area will be weakened, but will probably pump out new shoots next Spring and I'll have to reapply a root killing weedkiller. Other gardeners claim it can take several years of treatment to eradicate horsetail from an area. Please give us updates on this product which looks like it might be more powerful than shop bought weedkillers. Good luck!!

+fester boyle I popped up the allotment today to check it and it is showing promise. The mares tail has started to die back and it really looks like the second spray I did worked. I am popping up tomorrow after popping to the garden centre to record an update video. I will spray again before the end of September as it recommends to not spray after September as won’t work aswell.

This year I have had regrowth but no where as near as last year. I believe it will take a few coats over a few years to keep it at bay fully.

I've been tacking Horse Tail for the last 2 years (in my 3rd), I used a similar product which was called Kurtail...I was informed about a year ago that the product I had bought would not be sold again (EU law) but a new product is available (which I think you have). I have sprayed it on the front and the back and it does turn the it black and dies but comes back the following year, I have done this for 2 years for me and a neighbor, this weed is from the Jurassic period I am told and is resistant to the weed killers you can buy from shops... from research the roots can go down 2 meters and one visible weed could be connected via the root system to many more... also if you try and remove it and the root doesn't come out then it will split, basically you've removed one head and 2 will grow... due to a wax it produces this is why it's hard to kill... I think this year I will bruise the weed before spraying... my neighbor has a pebbled area on her front, she had it redone with new membrane and pebbles re-added, it grew through this, she got someone else in who stated he can stop it but the same happened... on the front I have a solution, I'm covering it with membrane and covering it timber, if it has no light surely it can't grow... ???
Oh apparently you need to let it grow to 10cm in height before you can spray, also it does seed in late spring but there are no buds to show this.. Marvel should make a movie "HorseTail Man" which is on par with Superman... :)
EDIT : I watched this vid which opened my eyes... (ruclips.net/video/W0iVtP1WKHo/видео.html)
The plant has a female root that grows, from what I can tell it's early April, kill this and it stops producing spores...

Marestail is very easy to get rid of using a fork during quite dry weather, make sure the ground isn't claggy

I have tried that and unfortunately it comes back every time. Thank you for the information tho
