The lack of tunnels in Kingdom Builder is actually a plus for me. It makes it even more important to be cautious how you expand so that you leave options open to jump and start elsewhere. i.e. make sure you minimize how many different terrain types you are adjacent to. Our games very rarely have people locked into single monolithic expansion
@@BoardGameCo You said you had all the expansions, but the mines promo would give you what you want! I've just posted above, please read that comment.
I just played Kingdom builder and I was very impressed! This is more intuitive than people claim. It has to do with spacial awareness and pattern recognition that is far better than ticket to ride which is more of a connect the dots game than an area control map.
We play with draw a terrain card and you CAN redraw ONCE (having to use the second card if you redraw). It helps a lot if you NEEed terraib or "I drew 3 X ina row now".
Shira (is that how its spelled?) is getting wayyyyy to good at recording videos. I love seeing her in the different duck and BGC videos. It feels so natural. Keep it up you guys! Thanks for the videos.
Thanks for the review. I look for games that someone has played for years, the most played games, games that I will want to keep and play over and over. There is a problem with game reviews, and I have heard a lot that sound like this: “hey I just got this game and it’s better than this other game in my collection that I have played over and over and loved for 2 or 3 years, so I’m keeping this new one and getting rid of the other one. I highly recommend this new one.” Now I’m thinking that the new game may or may not be good, but the one that has been played over and over through the years and has proven itself. I’m more interested in that one.
To me, what helps the theme of Winter Kingdom a bit more is the grid set up always looks like a gigantic snowflake to me, makes it feel more wintery .. Love all of the extra content though, in kingdom builder. Winter kingdom feels almost like an express, more breezy version which is fine. But my friend, and I will often set aside an entire afternoon .. calling it Kingdom Builder Day! Just so we can play through multiple variations of the play maps and abilities .. One last note, that while I do believe the new winter kingdom maps are prettier (they pop more!) I feel somehow the kingdom builder boards layout is a bit structurally more sound .. whereas the winter kingdom boards, feel more like a kaleidoscope of color that feels more random when playing .. especially with the tunnels that are added in. Allows you to go pretty much anywhere Oh, one more thing .. the fact that they call what looks like water, from the previous game ice. Yes, it’s colder and I understand thematically why .. but it’s kinda confusing, when you see all those white sections of the board. Gotta remind myself that’s not ice, it’s snow .. and the blue is not water, it’s ice!! Ok, that’s all I got lol
I like winter kingdom and it's easy to simplify the rules for kids. I gave away my copy of kingdom builder to my sister-in-law. Games you are done playing make excellent just-because gifts 🎁
Great review/overview! I like both games. But yea the original game really need the tunnels and i can't really go back after playing with them tbh. They could fix it with just adding it as an expansion to the og game thou. But for now i like Winter Kingdom more (even with the terrible rulebook that makes this harder to teach) and i want more stuff. I really hope they support it enough to at least enough so we get a total of ten tiles and one more terrain and maybe other types of icons on the board, especially like the idea of making the middle more attractive for people to rush into.
@@BoardGameCo That would be nice :) Maybe you could add a short (3-4min) section where you describe more on a high-level why Wild Assent is not directly comparable to the other two. Differences in the general game structure or what it is. Because to me (who has never played any of them) they are all advertised as coop monster-hunting games and also look quite similar.
I would love to try Winter Kingdom, but I can’t find it in any of the stores where I normally purchase games. Are they not going to release it to the normal sellers? It seems it is only available to those who got the Kickstarter version or else directly from Queen Games,

Kingdom Builder is a game I never felt the need to own, even though I enjoy it occasionally on BGA. For this style / "theme" I'd much rather play Isle of Skye. I'd totally check out the Winter version, if I ever got the chance, though.
Kingdom Builder has a Mine promo, which sounds like it implements that portal mechanic in Winter Kingdom. Although I own it, I seldom play it because I love the struggle to get where I need to be - I play 2 player usually, so that may be a factor here. But there's no reason why people can't get that promo, or make their own components: it's only 4 hexes, and some rules!

I can hear that...but my biggest problem with KB was always new people and them not liking being stuck. That doesn't happen as much anymore.

It's a very cool system

She's not too bad :)
Play This, Not That for Fantasy Realms vs Red Rising. I feel Jan got that one right over on Quackalope, but interested to see your input on it.
I do need to do that at some point :)

Than get Kingdom Builder :)
You have Caves as promos in Kingdom Builder ;). Great little expansion (it works like tunnels)
Yes! Good point.

I look forward for Iss Vanguard update.
In my friends copy of winter kingdom, the huts and the bigger buildings are all the same in every color 🤔

They actually do have the caves for the original game, but I prefer it here.
My head hurts from all the time warps😳🐥 still think it's time she does a video with either you or 🐥 as guests😁
Lol that's the way videos work :)
Wow, didn't expect you would like these games that much!. Not sure why, but it never met to grasp me or pull me in. Maybe it's the art.
This was just the video I was hoping for! Thanks for the coverage. :)
Glad we could help :)
Uh, sweet idea.
Already looking forward to the Wild Assent - Primal - Monster Hunter World comparison :D
I can do the latter 2....Wild Assent isn't as close to them :)
@@BoardGameCo That would be nice :)

I would just give each player an additional secret ability card.
That could work
I have the same text message notification on my phone!
Lol nice :)
@boardgameco can you mix the cards and boards with the kingdom builder or its too different to do such a thing ?
Too different
@@BoardGameCo thanks for responding

Are you from the US? They do have it on Amazon.
Thank you
What is this witchcraft? Shira is both in your basement, and off with Jesse at Board Game Spotlight.
Lol yep. the magic of the internet.
I’m very efficient :)
