As a violin maker, I spend a lot of time planing very highly figured wood dead flat by hand. The winding sticks are an ancient and fairly effective tool but nothing beats an accurate steel straight edge. Lay it diagonally across the piece and any wind will be painfully obvious. It will also show all bumps, high points, etc. The fewer times you change your tool, the faster you'll work.
I think winding sticks only work better for very long boards.

I've got some pretty decent match sticks chasing 6 x 2 with a no. 4 plane. 1st lesson, chose better stock. 2nd lesson, get a bigger plane. 3rd lesson, pants on before shoes. My village wants it idiot back!
When I started out I looked at a few similar tutorial-guide-ish videos like this one, how to square & dimension using hand planes. Bought a jointer/planer combination the next week. Totally worth it.
I did a Live edge, Epoxy filled, Yew side table project when I was at home over Xmas, I was appalled at the finish on my 1972 Lurem P/T.
2 Sharpened blades, a lot of swearing, table adjustment, more swearing, more table adjustment and a day later, et viola! As perfect a finish as one could expect from a 45 year old machine with wonky infeed drive (Thicknesser). Character Yew is horrid for snipe, as the grain changes direction like a Mumbai cab driver, but the finished results are lovely! Matts Planing techniques would have achieved even better results in a fraction of the time.
I also re-furbished my router table insetting the UJK Technologies compact Cast Iron router table top, my Incra Fence Positioner and Incra Miter 100SE Mitre guage! (Santa had been very good to me this year)!
Fantastic video! Gave me the confidence to buy some rough sawn sapele and try planing flat for glue up. It took a bit of time and trial and error, but I did it on 3 different pieces. Really chuffed. Thanks Matt!

Great stuff Matt, to the point, no bull.
Take a crayon and color the whole face. When you plane it. It takes the high spots off. Which removes the marks. It shows you highs and lows. It also has the benefit of being wax. Which improves you momentum.

It like enjoying the beauty of a freshly mown yard; it's always more enjoyable when someone else does it. Watching someone square timber by hand on youtube looks easy in the comfort of a soft bed. In the shop it seems like work.
I hate it when my square is too big too....that's why I got a smaller one. Though sometimes that's too big also. You just cant win. Great video Matt!

For stability and contrast, make your winding sticks out of qtr. sawn r. & w. oak.
It would really help if you start by identifying which hand planar you use as you work on each board, and why that planar is good for jointing.

When doing a shooting board, did you consider there is a maximum width for each stock to avoid any bending ? I mean is it preferable to have 3 stocks of 150mm width or 9 of 50mm ?

I'm currently building my first workbench and am running into a bit of trouble. With my bench top complete I have moved on to the legs and stretchers and I cannot for the life me get all four sides square. I am using your method of flattening, correcting twist, and establishing a face and one edge square. However, when I mark out the other sides to get the piece parallel and plane to my marks, I always end up with one side out of square. Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong?

I really enjoy your videos.....ususall people have links to get whatever you use on the video...maybe you should. extra $$. but the bench pups and bench dogs that you talked about, what is the name of the part at the opposite in. the adjust?
Wouldn't this be where you would use a jointing #7 plane? This is exactly what it's for, as opposed to a low angle jack plane?
I HATE doing that by hand. Takes my whole free afternoon to square 2-3 boards. I really have to get myself some power tools so my projects would take few weeks instead few months... It's so unsatisfying to go to my workshop after work with project in mind thrilled to start working, but end up squaring (usually not all) timber for whole of my free time.
Hi Matt! Great video, as usual! I got curious: I noticed your tools have patches of corrosion on them, and I was wondering: is it too damp where you live? I have this problem in my workshop and for a time I got worried about it, but I am now tried to focus on the work instead of the tools... but eventually I will need to tend to my tools so they don't get too rusty...
Just put some general-purpose oil (not organic oil) on a rag and wipe metal parts down with that and then wipe the oil off with a clean rag. Enough oil will hide in the roughness of the surface to prevent corrosion - for most folks.
Moisture in the air condenses on cold surfaces. Store your tools somewhere warmer and the problem goes away.
I would demonstrate how to fix an out of square board, but I planed it perfectly the first time.
Planing pallet wood and got clogging so went through a thorough sharpening and stropping session, the very next plank I started planing hit a nail I missed... argggg back to sharpening.
What if the bottom of the board was out of wack wouldn't that throw it off as Well, so then what u flip it an than your chasing your tail. I've gotten so frustrated just trying to find perfection on all 4, "hulk smash". JK woodworking is Zen. Love your videos, watching from Michigan.
It looks like the top of the wonder dog gets in the way of your plane when using it for hand planing. Did you run into this issue?

Get a No.7 jointer plane and a long straight edge. Thats the best you can do other than sheer effort!
Matt Estlea - Furniture thanks! What are your thoughts on using a laser level for checking flatness on the board, since I dont know where will I find a long straight edge
A pair of wedges and the dogs is cheaper and you can make them any size you need from scrap.

Andy Midd Yes. I got that part. That's why I said jointer plane and not jointer.

Yes you could, it's just quite knackering to use! The Jack Plane is the happy medium, or the 'Jack of all trades'

I only know ye olde wooden jointer planes (which are ~60 cm long), they're not really meant for short boards like this. They're mostly for boarders longer than 2 meters or so.
You say that but I've heard that Furniture Making legend Alan Peters favoured a No.7 for the vast majority of his work. I must say I would be exactly the same if I wasnt such a lazy bastard.
