  • You can pick up one of these for next to nothing on ebay and add it to your keyboard stable...... veteran reviewer, Stephen Mendes, points out the significant advantages of ownership. New Patch included for those who already have one.

    Tks Mr. Mendes for the great work you do and for taking the time to share with those like me that appreciate the most. I just got my DX27 yesterday and I will be following your videos for additional learning. And by the way...totally agree with you about subscribing to this valuable channels like yours in order to help or at least for the people surfing to give a 'like' that helps so much for the tremendous amount of work that you put in to make a good informative video.....cheers...

    So many of us, myself included, rushed back into this resurgence of FM operator synthesis thinking "Oh boy! I should be able to make ALL KINDS of new sounds with this 80s technology, how hard can it be?" 😂 My only criticism of 4 operator FM synthesis is incompatibility with 6 operator, because I tend to just use what others have made over the decades.

    • @StephenMendes
      @StephenMendes  6 лет назад +4

      Hi Haze.... I see your point.... even the softsynth 'FM programs' seem to have 6 operators....... and to convert a patch from 6 operators to 4 is NOT a trivial matter.... IF..... it is using all 6 of the operators..... BUT however lots of patches do not really utilize all the operators..... I would bet you that probably half of the factory preset patches in the DX7 are using no more than 4 operators........ even if the operator may be 'turned on' it's NOT contributing to the sound if its OUTPUT LEVEL is ZERO....... I checked the Preset Patches in DX-27 and to my amazement 'parameters and EG settings' were manually set to all sorts of values (other than the default) but were doing absolutely NOTHING for the actual sound due the all important OPERATOR OUTPUT LEVEL setting....... so, Haze, you need to remember that all these 'wonderful patches' are created by PEOPLE just like you and me (presumably employed by Yamaha) who are in essence 'playing' with the settings to CRAFT the sound..... and once they get it right they are not going to waste their time returning UNUSED EG parameters back to their 'default' values...... so the key to discovering which operators are actually being used is the OPERATOR OUTPUT LEVEL setting..... best wishes and happy patching.

      Hi Haze I took the time to visit your channel, your Flickr account, your website and even your Sound Cloud account (as I have all these things as well) and I am impressed that you did all this..... but if you want more visitors, subscribers and a better ranking in google..... here's a tip, buddy, you gotta subscribe to other people channels and accounts as well because when you do, it brings more exposure to you..... if you check my channels tab you will see how many other channels I am subscribed to ..... not as many as are subscribed to me but it doesn't matter..... everytime you subscribe to a channel similar to yours you get promoted in that category on both RUclips and Google search ...... I am presuming you would like more subs and viewers and more exposure but if you don't care about these things that's fine too..... I plan to start doing some vids on how to grow on RUclips (just waiting on my own channel to do a little better first :) but I am studying it to find out what works and what doesn't ..... the material that I put up can never reach mega hits.... but I just want respectable exposure within the context of my channel content..... so have a great day buddy and keep on drumming

    it looks like the button panels are of the separate Lego-pieces-like kind, like the korg poly 800, instead of those nasty spiky and now easily breakable button caps in DX7-II. is that right? loved this review, makes me want one, but I have the FB-01 module with the same engine and no more space for keyboards.

    • @StephenMendes
      @StephenMendes  4 года назад +1

      the button panel on the DX27 is superior to the DX7 and the DX11..... DX27 has quality buttons that have not malfunctioned after 34 years.... I never could understand how the more expensive in the DX family had inferior buttons... but that's the reality of the situation.

    Thanks for this and other DX27 videos. It's a very interesting machine. I had been interested in the Reface model (basically a DX100/21/27 remake) but this has got me looking for a DX27 because of its full size keys and better build. I already struggle with the mini keys on my midi keyboard so this might be better. I guess they both have their pros and cons (the OS on the Reface seems more up to date) but may have similar hardware. Have you had a look at the Reface and do you have any views on it vs the original DX27/100?

    • @StephenMendes
      @StephenMendes  3 года назад

      Here is my opinion..... if I did NOT own a DX27 from new then I would probably buy a Reface (rather than buy somebody old DX27)..... I do NOT play on "mini keys" so I would have to play Reface from another keyboard using MIDI control..... I know you can pick up "bargains" second hand market, but as I live on a small island in the "middle of nowhere" I prefer to buy new gear 😊...... I bought my DX27 new during the 80's and it is an excellent keybed..... NONE of the "modern" mass-produced plastic keybeds can compare to the quality and feel of an 80's keybed 😊

    • @stevenuttley
      @stevenuttley 3 года назад +1

      @@StephenMendes Thank you for your reply. I agree it is certainly a risk buying an old synth - particularly as prices are now going up again. An old machine could fail tomorrow and you would have no recourse. I take your point about mini keys, they are difficult no doubt - though some are smaller than others. I guess in reality the Reface is really a DX100 remake. It has the advantage of portability, weight and a newer OS but anyone who struggles with mini keys would have to also invest in a full size midi keyboard.

    • @StephenMendes

      Hold down the KEY SHIFT button while turning on the power...... a cursor will appear under one of the letters of the start up message ..... you use the DATA ENTRY slider to change the character to anything you want ..... then when you press the KEY SHIFT button you can move the cursor to the next position (pressing it multiple times to move to ANY position)...... so when you have it reading what you want ..... simply press the INTERNAL(PLAY) button to go to normal mode ..... and your new message will be remembered the next time you power on the DX27
