Two of my favorite games came out around this time period. This and Halo 2. Ill be honost, I own every game in both series and both are spectacular. I know a lot of people are gonna disagree but I really liked the change of pace in Doom 3 from its previous titles. I liked the build up of fear and intensity before every fight. One of the two scariest games of all times in my opinion. I absolutly loved having to switch back and forth between the flashlight, it scared me shitless :D
Thanks, I was watching somebody play Doom 3 and so I wanted to go back and watch the old review. Gamespot's link doesn't even work. I like old stuff like this.
Amazing review. Everything he says is concise, smart. There's never any comment that derives from strong argumentation and intelligent reasoning. And it's great he sees the entirety, the wholeness in stead of single little elements only. Haven't quite played the game though...I'm really only into old school FPS...
This came out in 2004 - It was WAY ahead of it's time. Doom 3 was fucking awesome. It's sad that somehow they pissed off the forces that be in the review world.
The most sensible review I've seen. Very good argumentation. And besides, everything coincides with my own impression here. Doom 3 is certainly not a masterpiece and has some weak spots, but it's still a decent game and worth playing at least once.
@mikey5014 yep, you can easily find the 'duck tape' mod that adds lights to your weapons. There minor graphic upgrades, and some major sound upgrades too. I have been playing with a light on my pistol and SMG, a full weapon mod that changes sound, power, clip size, and appearance. And lastly a mod that randomizes enemy spawns, (it doesn't change how many monsters spawn, but a fat zombie might be a wrench zombie instead, etc.) and even adds some enemies from the expansion pack.
@brizzlestick what do you mean it could look better (are you running at native resolution, I had to edit a file to get it to do that). also I suggest trying out the flashlight mod as it helps a lot (it essentially tapes a flashlight to two of your weapons, the shotgun and assault rifle)
@brizzlestick read my first comment for the ducktape mod. To set native resolution go to programfiles/doom3/base/doom3Config follow instructions below. Find these lines: seta r_customHeight "xxx" seta r_customWidth "xxxx" Change the x's to set your resolution. Now find this line: seta r_mode "x" Change the "x" to "-1". Find this line: seta r_aspectRatio "x" If your screen aspect ratio is 16:9, change the "x" to "1". If your screen aspect ratio is 16:10 or 15:9, change the "x" to "2". Save file
on a side note I recently re installed Doom 3 and downloaded a few dozen mods went through them and picked out some of the best I could find . Doom 3 still has some amazing re play value with the Co-op mod working very well and it included a classic Doom co-op as well. on top of that add some nice Hi-Rez textures and graphics mods plus some lighting tweaks and the game looks just as good as anything released this year and it's 5 years old very few games make it 5 years and still play well .
I think where doom 3 shines the most is when you have completed it and you can play all the amazing modifications and levels that level designers make. no matter how old doom 3 gets like its predecessors it will always be fun to come back to and play because designers will not quit.
i remember seeing this game in my gamepro mag and at the time thought it was the best thing i had ever seen as far at CG....this game at the time really showed what the future was heading for in just the few years that followed doom 3's release
@Thomasgrandgrind id software has been in development of Doom4 for some time now. If i remember correctly its scheduled to come out in 2012 or 2013 but im pretty sure its 2012
Played through the vanilla doom 3 and RoE just couple of days ago and now it felt a lot better than back in the days. Started a new game with perfected doom 3 mod and its amazing - all the lighting, shadows, steam and heat effects are tweaked to the max - game has bloom and HDR lighting, softshadows etc. and is looking incredible. Also the game is now really hard - lot of enemy attacks are lot stronger - some killing you with one hit. But the guns are also meatier so try it out.
You are right, reading e-mails and listening to voice-mails really slowed me down, while playing this. After all the game reminded me more of F.E.A.R. than of Doom 1. The only factor which really made me feel "home" was the imps and the chainsaw.
I also fully agree with the review. The game is a solid shooter that provides a long enough campaign to be worthwhile with its minimal multiplayer. The audio logs, as far as I know, originated or was made popular here and have since spread to Bioshock and Dead Space as a story-telling technique. Ultimately, a great, if predictable, game.
@@wubbalubbadubdub8089 Yes. Haven’t completed either but really enjoyed my time with them. Doom Eternal is a bit different with the platform of element but they have made 2 worthy sequels in my opinion.
6:48 I just finished Doom 3: BFG Edition on Marine difficulty for the first time and it took me 7.5 hours to finish Doom 3, 2.5 hours to finish Resurrection of Evil, and 1.5 hours to finish The Lost Mission. That's a total of 11.5 hours for the entire Doom 3 saga, so how Greg estimated 15 to 20 hours to finish just Doom 3's campaign alone is beyond me.
I prefer the old flashlight version. Also, Doom 3 and Metroid Prime were the best shooters, if not games of their time. I still play them today and remark how well they've aged.
The Demons and Humans are moving through the base, you directly behind them. The Humans are combating huge waves of enemies on the front line while you are running around behind it all, clearing out the remaining Demons.
@bhelish yes but in dead space it doesn't take like 40 seconds to get killed. you could die very easily and the challenge makes you feer the monsters more
@sigma122222 Awesome. I played Duke Nukem Forever a month back, and it reminded me of Doom 3 so i started playing it again. And holy shit, was i wrong. Doom 3 was ahead of its time.
the monsters keep spawning behind you, after some time you get used to it. -- well, i never get used to it, the monster gets me everytime! often with a heart lurch.
I was unaware of that, having (unfortunately) never played System Shock 2. I will, however, maintain that audio logs hve become increasingly popular since then, save for Bioshock which would be the successor to SS2.
The constant spawning is so predictable when you see items, it's often considered the best way to conserve health, armor, and ammo is to not take the very obvious trap pick-ups. That's one of my many gripes with this game.
I think for that time the best looking game was far cry and the best sounding was doom. But half life as you said was made to age well. DOOM 3 was amazing back in the day and as you said those 3 games practically made me like FPS games.
@help4343 I would rate HL2 and D3 about equally. HL2's plot and characters are better of course, but D3 had some seriously memorable encouters and locations with the survival horror element to boot.
@MrEvol94 Yeah, i forgot about soundtrack. I'd even go so far as to say soundtrack and voice-acting are more important than graphics. And I loved Uncharted 2 as well, but every big budget game will have graphics as good or better in less than 5 years. However, I can't agree with you on the best story bit (the monkey suits were retarded). I think that honor has to go to the first Mass Effect. It combined mystery, crime, sci-fi, and philosophy almost perfectly to create a masterpiece of fiction.
@PseudonymPlayer There's something called a mod that can do that for doom 3. T.T. I'm pretty sure they made a mod so that the flashlight is attached to the gun so you don't have to switch from flashlight to gun. You just gotta search.
I think the reason why the marines get killed and not you is because either they mostly became possesed, or they got attacked by surprise, its harder to fight when the enemies are attacking from the shadows. Although I guess the main character wasnt cursed because he was lucky I guess, but if you character died it would be pointless.
Still it remains that kind of game which makes you think twice about playing it at 2am with the lights turned off and the sound up... not many games do that after 5 years of gameplay
@MrMoneymaker1203 But thats just it there was only like 2 arch vile in the entire game. The arch vile was my favorite monster in the original doom games. But He didnt show up very much in doom 3 :[
valves source engine gets Updates they try and do it incrementally to let all the mods still be compatible with the base source engine. it's a tough balancing act to try and keep up with the latest tech and try and keep a mod community supporting the games at the same time. the last game Left for Dead 2 has a ton of updates to the source engine and runs great and looks good.
If you like the old Doom games and you want more of those. Its the game for you. If you want a more current style of game find another game. Thats if your ignoring the mods.
The only problem with this game was the lighting. It was too dark to see anything and the damn flash lights suxxors For some reason I like this 10x better than any modern FPS. Maybe because of the simple yet classic gameplay?
God I can't in Monday I'm getting a new gaming laptop, and since this game is old. But still looks amazing im getting this off of gamestop direct download
If your going to play this game do yourself a favor and play the pc version. I own both the xbox and the pc version and so far ive noticed that the pc version has a lot more areas to explore
@Thomasgrandgrind Its actually in the making for a while. Hopefully the new doom game will come a few months after rage. But thats probably wishful thinking.

I've seen people who are atrocious at gaming who always sit at their couch, and people are true professionals and don't spend much time gaming. I really don't care if someone is bad at a game, but if they are going bash on a game, especially an old game, unreasonably, they better seal up all holes I can use to criticize and/or disprove their statements.
yeah, my doom was the wulfen texture pack and the sikkmod - and looks just as good as a 2008 2010 title - mind the models - But you don't even notice that IN game while their jumping at you. Great game - great pacing. Watching this makes me realize just how unimportant graphics are. I mean, I really enjoyed Killzone 2 and played the hell out of it's multiplayer, but it didn't do anything very new except first-person cover. Doom 3, Killzone 2, and Crysis show that what really makes a game a classic, what makes it enjoyable to come back to, and what makes it memorable, are its story and gameplay. That's why games like Starcraft, MGS4, and Half-Life 2 are classics.

Hey, can an ATI Radeon Xpress Series graphics card and a CPU speed good enough for modern games run Doom 3?
@legendp2011 where did you find these files sir?? because I would love to get them as well..
