I've taught Low brass for 33 years. Between tuba, euphonium and trombone, I've taught this etude to literally hundreds of students, and I never get tired of it.
@@lolom8772 good question. I think the biggest changes are security at the schools, and changes the smart phone and internet world has brought us (youtube recording, electronic payments, texting and email for communication, and app based metronomes and tuners)
@@lolom8772 we had metronomes before, but they were separate devices that if the kids had them, usually had dead batteries. Students are much better at keeping their phones charged. Back then, electronic tuners were pretty rare and expensive. No excuses these days for not having one
So I’m barely starting high school and watching this man play the trombone really inspires me to be a better trombone player and play as well as him one day
Well done! Thank you for providing the manuscript... I have recommended my players to "play-along" after listening to your thoughtful lesson on expressive phrasing!
Flying Turtleman I’m a freshman too and last year I was 3rd in my region but with enough practice you’ll get it. Just build your range by doing high buzzes on your mouthpiece for 5 minutes a day and then play those pitches. I do this with my private lesson teacher. My first lesson I could barely play a high g above the staff and now I can play a double e flat. It’s just practice
Aye!! Joe Dixon was my private lesson teacher my freshmen and sophomore year of high school!! I'm now currently a sophomore in college, and btw we did this etude my freshmen year of high school as well.
Not a trombone or brass player here, but I'm expecting the characteristic "blowing raspberries" sound from the trombone on the attack of the notes that's magically and wonderfully missing. Wow, just beautiful. I've searched for others demonstrating this and he is so smooth in comparison. What's he doing?
Late response, but that raspberry sound that a lot of synthesizers and younger players produce on the attack is basically the waves taking a long time to cancel out at the beginning of the note. Not to get into complicated acoustics, but if you know how strings instruments work, it's much the same for brass instruments. In other words, every possible frequency plays immediately, but because of the shape of the horn and the embouchure, most frequencies end up canceling each other out and all you're left with is the fundamental note that you hear and multiples of that note (the harmonic series). To be less technical, I get my air and buzz into the horn immediately and so you don't have that audible brraaaapp sound at the beginning, whereas most younger players actually start their air a bit too slow. It's still there, but it's much much quicker so it's inaudible. At least, that's my working theory.
I had to play measures 26 to the end for my final exam of the year and I had a hard time figuring it out myself but thank God for this video because it made me get it perfectly! Tysm!
For freshmen in our area, our cut for the song is 17-25. For any freshmen struggling on the range. Just keep practicing!! Don’t tense up! Work on scales and arpeggios! I got it, so can you!
I love this etude, but I have so much trouble hitting notes consistently well in the high register. I really want to be able to play this etude, and will practice the crap out of it. Anybody have any tips for improving the high register?
It's actually on there, but some of the middle is cut out. You can get the same cap from Shires if you end up with a twin valve! Ask them about the Skeleton cap. Opens up the sound a bit.

Agreed. It’s just so musically satisfying.
Whats it like teaching for that long?Have techniquesw of playing changed from 30 Years ago?

Mark Finley oh ok that would definitely make sense, must’ve been crazy when students started using their phones to keep the tempo instead huh?

I love this etude. Comfortable key, and it allows for a huge deal of expression.
STOP SAYING MY FIFTH POSITION IS SHARP!
Obinna Nwakwue, but is SHARPE!!!!!!!!!!
Ngl I think it’s kinda sharp
Yea, gotta agree with everyone else
yeah now that others are saying it, I realized it's kinda sharp
Yeah tbh it is

fr as a freshman I feel like I’m a solid player but this guy is something else
Not gonna lie my chops would be dead by measure 20
TheAverageGamer yeah I can only play through this abt twice before my chops are gone
freshman gang! and yea, John is a huge inspiration with these videos
Shantanu Chakraborty lmao nice
This is so good! Gold star ⭐️ to you john romero
When he said “omae wa mou shindeiru” ...I felt that.
We all did
Wait I didn’t expect him to actually say that I thought you were just joking
I’m on zoom listening to this and my English teacher.

Wonderful, this is one of the etudes for my college placement
my school wants me to learn it as a freshman WTF
Flying Turtleman Don’t worry you’ll get it the first million of tries like did.

I have to do it for a fine arts school audition junior year and another song twice as long
I loved the lyrical interpretation. Gorgeous.
Thank you for this blessing @John Romero
he makes this look so easy
i remember when i had this etude as one of the region etudes my sophomore year, good times
The fact this man does this on bass trombone makes this even more crazier
No that's a tenor trombone......
Obinna Nwakwue no he’s right. He has a double valve tenor trombone
@@thejjjer346 I said that was a tenor trombone......
It's a tenor btw. Single valve tenor. But the valve has two rotors. Check it out on the Shires website, the Twin Valve!
I wait around every year to see whichtrombone etudes are gonna be played.
Wish I would have had videos like this in high school...keep it up!!
Aye!! Joe Dixon was my private lesson teacher my freshmen and sophomore year of high school!! I'm now currently a sophomore in college, and btw we did this etude my freshmen year of high school as well.
I have found that playing this in d flat minor sounds AWESOME
beautiful phrasing
It's amazing how effortlessly he can play those really high notes. Very inspiring to an 8th grade trombone player like myself
He makes the high Bb seem like Bb right above the staff
This sounds so beautiful, I love it so much. Simply put, I am amazed.
Oh No! I have the first part of this in an old practice book and never knew there was more!!
I need that for b flat trumpet badly I love this studie so much good job
Bravo. Great phrasing

This was my Janfest etude last year
UGA Janfest?
@@Wagglezzz it was the UGA janfest. Though not the whole thing. I think it was like the first 16 measures or so that we had to play for the audition

This was in the Blazevich clef studies book
This was so good, when is the last etude coming out
@Saurav Bastola he meant by John Romero
@Saurav Bastola They have not posted the 3rd Etude for this year's Etudes
@Saurav Bastola oh ok thanks
I’m actually working on this one in my private lessons. It’s in my Voxman book😂. Too bad I don’t live in that state.
I can tell that he has spent many hours on long tones. Chops of steel
I appreciate the scuffed up trombone. Looks fade in comparison to its inner quality.
I can’t believe I had trouble on this in my freshman year 🙄🙄
After one year of high school and this looks so easy
I don't even live in Texas why am I here
Why am I watching this? I’m a bassoon player.
Same here, no idea why this is in my recommended.

Musical phrasing, dynamics, breathing,etc... All great tips no matter what instrument you play. I listen to piano players and I play trombone!

@ John Romero how do you effectively add Rubato and use it to add emotion to the piece?
Anyone else recording rn?
