- Matt Entz has left his Head Coaching job in the FCS at North Dakota State to step forward into the FBS as USC's next LB's coach and Assistant Head Coach for defense. After allowing 29.3 points per game last season including 41 against Arizona and 49 against Cal, Lincoln Riley understood that firing former DC Alex Grinch was vital for USC's success. Heading into the BIG10 Conference that brands itself as being very physical means that the Trojans need a new identity on the defensive side of the ball. Matt Entz hopes to do just that.

Entz has the biggest challenge with taking the linebackers to the next level.
No doubt, but he is the right guy to do it.
What I want to know is how can Lincoln Riley screw this up? You stated that "IF" USC's defense shows improvement this year, then Entz will be gone. How could USC's defense be worse? I'd say Entz needs to keep his bags packed, because Riley would have to prohibit the defensive coaches from coaching, or ban the players on defense from practicing for this not to succeed. Someone must have put a gun to Riley's head to get him to allow USC to even have a "defense".
Without depth on defense, it doesn't matter how good the coaching staff is. That will be the key to seeing the Trojans' defense improve heading into the BIG10.
No he went to USC. Say what you want but if you are the next great coach, we will be the judge of that and you better have a defense. We at USC know that and don’t accept less from someone who is supposed to be a great head coach. Pressure was put on because this is USC. You are a great coach right? Prove it. Now. It reminds me of my favorite story. The Lakers in their nba record 33 game win streak title season were covered by a beat writer everyday of that streak who hung around in the locker room. Lakers won 33 games in a row that year on their way to a title and is a record that still stands. The night they lost to end the streak, the beat writer got a call and got up and left. When a Laker asked where he was going all of a sudden? The guy responded “ I don’t cover losers.” This is our town. For some reason, accepting losers across the rest of the country have ridiculed LA sports. And it is because over here we accept nothing but the best especially when you are supposed to be the best.
But can USC begin to beat Oregon on the recruiting trail? That’s the question.
That will be tough to catch. I think the bigger question is, can they compete on the field? That will lead to better opportunities in the recruiting trail.

I think if the defense improves as expected under this new staff Lynn will be in the NFL in short order and Entz will take over as D coordinator.
He will be great fit if that happens!

He’ll take over for Lynn when Lynn leaves in a couple years.
He might jump ahead and get a big chance at DC or HC elsewhere. Either way, USC is in good hands for the for-seeable future on defense.
Sadly, you've still got Bennie Wiley. So, a lack of physicality will still be a huge problem. And, Riley just can't get that, he's 100% a tricks and finesse guy.
BW did what he was told to do… the style of defense they ran required D-lineman and rush ends to be fast little lighter. Strength coaches don’t just do what they want with players.
Entz will be the head coach in 2 years after they fire Riley..
Have ANY of the last dozen Riley hires been the answer?
Riley has only had 2 DCs, Stoops brother and even worse Alex Grinch. Every D hire this offseason on paper is a rockstar and SC paid about $7 million alone just on the defensive staff.

Can he coach a season for USC before you ship him off to coach somewhere else.
It will be tough to keep a guy as good as Entz for more a few years.
His defense didnt look good in the FCS playoffs
I'll push back a little here. Their defense was good enough to reach the semifinals and had to play three straight road games. Entz didn't have a dominant defense like he usually does, but his players still were aggressive and swarmed to the ball. They lost a nailbiter to Montana who had a great offense. Look at his championships at NDSU- 2 as head coach and 4 as DC.
