  • Serious topic in today's video about getting sick or having an accident in Thailand. I chat with my friend Pat who recently had a motorbike accident in Phuket Thailand and had no health insurance to cover the cost.
Plus i talk about my quotes for private health insurance here in Thailand that i now know and strongly advice everyone that is staying for an extended period should have.

I had a motorbike accident in Thailand in 2006 and broke my shoulder and spent 3 days in hospital, about B 100,000. Its worth checking the motorbike insurance as they picked up some of my bill. Most travel insurance policies exclude riding motorcycles so worth checking. If you ride a motorbike in Thailand its inevitable that you will have an accident at some point. I now always drive a car, its not worth the risk riding a motorcycle in Thailand.

Wishing Pat well, I’m an Aussie and when I was living in the UK I was 45 and my Girlfriend had moved into an old cottage after I came back to Oz to work for 10 weeks as it was during the GFC, I missed my footing on the narrow Victorian stairs and broke my Ankle snapped the Fibula in half, luckily Oz and UK have a reciprocal agreement with free healthcare cos I needed an ambulance, the care I received was top notch. I managed to break my other Ankle same break same spot at 55 in 2020 living out in the bush in Australia slipped on some ice on my deck middle of the night, I knew I had broken my right ankle but after crawling back inside and the tried to walk it off, finally conceded that I had to call an ambulance, spent 7 nights in hospital after surgery, cost me $60 for the moonboot 2 weeks after surgery, but I needed to hire a mobility scooter to get around my property and to walk my dog as I couldn’t drive as it was my right Ankle and my driveway is all quartz rock, no way I could use crutches on that and I’m a few hundred metres from neighbours places, had a free local service deliver my groceries twice a week, as I’m 20kms from town, though the major hospital was 45 mins away. Still have to get the metal plate out and screws as my body doesn’t like it, but Covid took off here middle of last year so I just missed out on the surgery as it’s non urgent, but it’s ok had to buy a different car as my Ute(pick up) couldn’t get a comfortable accelerator foot position anymore but the new/old car is great. I will always travel with insurance now which I have when I traveled in S.E Asia and the US of course, but it feels different when you move somewhere. I used to ride bikes in Australia but I gave it up as when I lived in the city people were trying to kill me all the time on the way to work, so as tempting as it is in Thailand I have never ridden a scooter there, as it’s everyone else who you have to look out for and I don’t bounce as much as when I was younger.

It is not recommended for any foreigner to ride a motorbike in Thailand, this is very high risk. However, if you have to ride a motorbike and you would like to reduce your risk, the most two important things to put into your mind, is the following:
1- Stay with a small scooter, 150 CC max,
2-Keep very speed inside any town or city 30 KM average speed, 40 KM max speed, this is how Thai seniors ride :) outside the town keep your speed below 60 KM, stay alert
If you have an accident, know that every Thai city have a good number of government hospitals and they will treat you without having an insurance, excellent care, you pay but the cost will be a small fraction what a private hospital will charge you. Insurance is one of ills of the modern world, avoid it if you can.

NIce Video and Richie get your ass in gear and get the insurance quickly, you never know when an accident strikes. I had a similar situation on 30jan 2008, 2 days before moving into our brand new condo in HuaHIn, I fell on the motor bike while sliding on gravel and sand, hit the wrong break, flew over the handle bar and fractured my Humerous bone and twisted 90 degrees, and this was at maybe 5km speed in a corner. Spent 2 days in the hospital which my US Insurance covered, flew back to Michigan and had the surgery, total cost $66K, all covered by insurance besides $2500 deductible. Big Bummer, off work for 5 months, and now with a plate and 10 screws holding my shoulder together, 80% mobility, but able to most things anyway! Next video, show us your receipt for your NEW Health insurance! Be safe and keep vlogging!

FYI not many people are aware that all motor vehicles have mandatory insurance coverage when the vehicle is registered and road tax paid.
"Compulsory Motor Insurance, also known as “Por Ror Bor” is a mandatory insurance required by law for all motor vehicles within Thailand. According to the Motor Victims Protection Act B.E. 1992, it came into effect on 5 April 1993 by requiring cars, including all types of motorcycles that are registered with the Department of Land Transport, and cars powered by electric engines or other energy to apply this “Compulsory Motor Insurance” to provide insurance coverage for everyone affected by car accidents, regardless of whether the person is a driver, a passenger, or a pedestrian. In the cases that involve a loss of life or body parts or health damage including the deceased person’s heir will also be covered, in the case of death."
It's worthwhile to look into this as you can make a claim though you won't get fully reimbursed as your hospitalization and treatment exceeded the coverage.
    Compulsory Motor Insurance
In 1992, the Thai government has passed a law that required all vehicles in the Kingdom of Thailand to have an insurance coverage that covers the medical expense of road victims. The law was implemented in April 5, 1993. If an owner of a vehicle fails to have this insurance, he/she will face a fine of THB 10,000 - 50,000.
    Coverage of Compulsory Motor Insurance
The compulsory motor insurance only covers bodily injury of the road victims. The property damage is not included. The coverage is divided as followed:
    1. Primary Loss
1.1 If the road victim receives a bodily injury, the insurer is subjected to pay for the actual medical expense of the road victim but not exceeding THB 15,000
1.2 If the road victim has lost his/her life, the insurer is subjected to pay the total of THB 15,000 for person.
1.3 If the road victim has received a medical treatment and lost his/her life at a latter stage, the insurer is subjected to pay accordingly to clause 1.1 and 1.2.
    2. Loss that exceeds the primary loss
2.1 The insurer is subjected to pay for the excess amount from the primary loss for a bodily injury case but not more than THB 50,000 per person.
2.2 The insurer is subjected to pay for the excess amount from the primary loss for a loss of life case but not more than THB 80,000 per person.
Summary of the Compulsory Motor Insurance coverage
    1. Bodily injury maximum THB 50,000/ person
    2. Dismemberment maximum THB 80,000/ person
    3. Loss of life maximum THB 80,000/ person
    Maximum coverage per case
    1. Vehicle with less than 7 seats maximum THB 5,000,000/ case
    2. Vehicle with more than 7 seats maximum THB 10,000,000/ case
Note : If it is proven that the driver is at fault, the insurer will only responsible for primary loss coverage only.

Question: If I'm riding on the back of one of them motorbike taxis out there and the driver of the bike gets into an accident which of course injures me, I'm thinking I will still be held liable to pay every dime of the medical costs and not a single dime will come from the motorbike company. Am I correct with that assessment?

  • @Paul-fr3fz
    @Paul-fr3fz 2 года назад

    Get well soon Pat.
Just to throw my 2 bucks into the topic....We can all probably agree, if you have a accident in Thailand it will probably be caused by riding a motorbike. This is where you really need to read the fine print of the insurance policy(Travel insurance and Thai expat insurance) because if you don't have a international motorbike license or Thai motorbike license and have any accident on the bike the insurance company may not pay. I think I read that in the AXA accident insurance policy. (Please correct me if I am wrong). It is so easy renting a bike in Thailand the bike dealer does not care if you have insurance or not, he just wants the rent money.
Stay safe everyone, these types of accidents happen all the time and can happen to anyone no matter how safe you think you drive the bike.

If you have no back up funds, 100 baht a day for health insurance sounds a no brainer. Best way is to have 1,000,000 baht saved up and put aside for medical problems before you move to Thailand, and add to it each year you are there, paying yourself is far better than paying an insurance company. £20k - £25k put aside for your long term health, don't think i would be moving there without it. It also makes sure you have funds available later in life, when insurance premiums get very expensive and you might not have the funds available to buy the insurance. Just my thoughts.

Hi. Which insurance company did you go with in the end? I have just had an accident on a moped and Regency did absolutely nothing, quite happy to leave me in a pool of blood at Mission Hospital the five hours. Totally comp insurance had to pay Bht80,000 myself.

I always had Medical Insurance when I stayed for months in Thailand. Never had to use it. Tho I had a Yamaha Scooter, I only rode it in Rural Issan. I never rode it in Big Cities. Too dangerous. The Rule of Thumb in Thailand is that the Ferang is always responsible for an accident, because the Thai Police can extract Baksheesh from the ferang. Thais seldom have spare money to bribe police. So the investigating Police will ask for money almost immediately. I broke my Fibula on my first day skiing. Orthopedic Doctor, not an Osteopath, who i sa glorified massage therapist. 140,000 ThB = $4050 USD. Not a bad price for a fractured lower leg.

Never travell without insurance! Thats rule number 1. If you cannot affort insurance then you cant affort to travell. People say they dont need it but then they find themselfs in hospital with 10000$ bill in their hand.

37000 baht for insurance. Is that monthly or yearly? Cheaper to pay out of pocket for services if its monthly

Buyer beware, insurance stops in Thailand at the age of 75, my hospital bill totaled £12,000, got a loan on the car, to get out of hospital, I had insurance via my Bank what but I didn't know about the 75 ruling until I tried to get payment.

Not all Travel insurance cover the hiring of motorcycles..get yourself covered for whatever you need…it can be an expensive lesson when you add the cost of a wrecked motorcycle.

Check out true traveler yearly travel insurance. Cheap as chips worth every penny. I know from experience they paid up no problem when I had a claim.
Note for Richie. Pacific cross you cannot claim for the first four months on new policies..and some disabilities have a 2 year no claim clause. Read the terms and conditions carefully.
