    On running the tractor in the snow, get a set of tire chains in it. We logged all winter with a W-9. With chains it will go through a lot deeper snow than you have there.

    you wouldn't believe what a difference a set of chains would make. We used them in the mountains of northern NM in the snow for skidding logs out in the winter.

  • @ravenfeather7087
    @ravenfeather7087 6 лет назад

    Looks like fun. Especially the shoveling.
    Some times the individual snowfalls are shallow enough to drive through and then if you keep repeating after each snowfall the snow gets packed down and turns to ice. And it's like driving on cement.
    Even if you the pack the trail the tires will take by walking on them that will be sometimes be a big help. Especially in the soft/muddy section. If you pack it down it should freeze solid if you don't let snow build up on it. And like someone else mentioned throwing down small logs etc.
    In this part of the world, much of the logging that is/was done was done during the winter when the swamps are froze over. But you have to deal with those soft spots by somehow exposing them to the cold and letting them freeze over.
    Sometimes you just have to let it go. But try you must. There's nothing like a tractor ride through a swamp when the cedar boughs are heavy with snow and the woods if full of hare tracks.

      i was wondering about that. any time i see videos or shows with secluded snowy places like this, someone gets their snow mobile stuck and low and behold it's some sort of 80's model. I do NOT doubt t hat these places get more extreme weather but, i've seen modified newer snowmobiles run down lakes and rivers no problems for hours on end on youtube. i might also bet the those newer machines cost 5 figures.

    Here’s a tip man, if your snowmobile gets stuck don’t shovel out in front of it. Instead sit in front of it, grab the front bumper with your hands, and kick/ shove as much snow as you can under it with your feet. Doing this will feed the sled snow for traction.

    • @calebm.5698
      @calebm.5698 6 лет назад

      Never pull from the bumper pull from the spindle that’s what they teach in the class to get a snowmobile license. Also I’m very fine powder like this that method wouldn’t have worked very well

    • @NVMDSTEvil
      @NVMDSTEvil 5 лет назад +5

      @@calebm.5698 what, is your bumper for cosmetic reasons? If its too weak to pull from you should be buying a different sled, and as mentioned in the previous comment he's saying to push snow under the track to compact it and give the sled something to work with. Fine powder or not its going to compact and be bulkier once you force it under there and all the movement up front is going to open up the path in front of it as well. You might need to pull from the spindle for your license but if you ever go anywhere other than a trail you can pretty much throw it out the window if thats what they are teaching you. Not that it matters, the sled was woefully inadequate for that kind of snow anyways. A locking differential or chains for the tractor would probably be a good idea...

    The rocket stove I built works well, similar to the way you did it, but I built it on the ground with some bricks in front so wood can be fed into it. Having 4 to 5 blocks high of chimney helps get the rocket effect going with the additional draft. If you make your chimney taller, it will work better.

    Old time woodsmen used to corduroy the roads through swampy and muddy areas by laying down 5 & 6 inch logs side by side across the wet areas. Of course this was done before the kinds of woods machinery we use today were available. When I was a kid I have seen corduroy roads built over a distance of a half mile long. And hundreds of cords of pulp wood were hauled over them in both summer and winter on sleds pulled by teams of horses.
    Those were the days. If you haven't seen teams of horses pulling big sled loads of logs out of the woods and heard those harness bells ringing and the teamsters talking encouragement to their horses you haven't really lived.

      My plan is to install a corduroy road through the mud-hole in the spring. Unfortunately, there's no use in cutting a road around it, because we'd just end up making another mud-hole if we did. The water runs close to the surface under the soil in many places where I am.

    Lol. I would’ve tried the tractor too. I would weld up some modifications lake put the sled or a skid anyway under the front axle so it doesn’t get buried and then maybe with some chance you can get through a lot nastier stuff. Same with the sled I would just build some side skirts on it to help float it on top of the snow when it got really soft. I have no idea if that would work on the snowmobile or not but I would probably try it. I also wonder if a little wedge on the front of the tractor just to push the snow to both sides would help. 🤔 I think it would be fun to try anyway. I’ve never lived anywhere with snow quite like yours since I was a teenager and I’ve never had the chance to play around with ideas like that. I’d love it. 😜

  • @bwillan

    You know you've got some serious snow when your snowmobile won't do the job. Seems you need a mountain sled with 2.5 inch lugs on the track. ;) Either that or a 20" wide bearcat or Skandic WT.
    Perhaps you could also head out to the cabin a little more often with the snowmobile and break trail and pull a weighted flat bottom sled to act as a trail groomer. This way you'd develop a nicely packed trail and make subsequent trips in and out easier.

    I think you have already upgraded the tractor by the time I am seeing this video, but. Tire chains on the back tires of the tractor would have helped a lot even if just the weight to help pack snow. You needed to flip the hitch up or off for what you where doing. Any kind of blade in the front would have made it worse in the mud. The electric winch you have would have been helpful if mounted on tractor for skidding logs and getting out. Your videos are excellent and your narration is nice to listen to. Often when the snow is deep the ground is not frozen hard and soft, which adds to the issues of driving a low bellied tractor in the deep snow, you did a great job using the brakes to switch wheels.

    I'd get a set of chains on that tractor, even in the mud it will do better. I'd also look at altering that drag bar on the back, there must be a way to modify it, so that it can swing up out of the way when not in use, or when you have a mud hole situation. It looked to me like that drag bar was also causing you troubles in the snow.
    That is a great little tractor, take good care of it, fix the stupid little things that can leave you stranded and you will have a good solid workhorse that won't let you down,
    Love you videos!
    Cheers from Tokyo Japan!

    I enjoy your videos a lot. You should get one of the drones that follow you around. And you won't have to run them over. Great Job!!

    got an 8n stuck like that once... had to hoof it back to the barn and get a bigger tractor to pull it out... never thought a snowmobile could get stuck like that though... around here they just never work most of the time...
