Good on you for all you have accomplished working one day a week and the odd extra day here and there. I'm glad you save a day to be with your family, otherwise, all your hard work would be kind of pointless... Glad you have the opportunity to work with your dad and sometimes your brothers. What great memories you are making.
I am impressed. Your like a sculptor with that chain saw. Your putting a lot of care in to those notches. Your videos are very enjoyable. Can't wait for the next one.
At 5:50 How heavy is that log? We marvel at your strength... that log isn't nearly as hefty as some loads you've borne - so...??? [Amazing work/accomplishments/creativity/diligence/teamwork]
Your vids always motivate me to go out in my backyard and do some cleaning up...lol. I'm retried and old like your dad, but your dad is still a beast. Always enjoyed your vids, keep it up, I'll be watching. Thank you.
When I first saw your videos, I just thought you were a punk kid playing in the woods. I was dead wrong. You've shown nothing but dedication and craftsmanship, skipping shortcuts, showing that you've done your research, and willing to make sacrifices (your dirtbike and snowmobile) to accomplish your dream. You've shown craftsmanship and care in your work, given thanks to your father, and been a very stand-up guy. I don't care if the update comes after Christmas, I'm willing to wait.
Another great vid!!! Thanks! We love to see how you work with your dad.... make sure you take good care of him!!! We love your instruction on scribing the timbers!! Very nice and you are very talented in this process.... we know, we have tried many times!!! LOL! Take care :)
I am SO enjoying watching your videos... i agree with the poster below... i am so impressed with your care, dedication, attention to quality and detail and your respect for your father and your family.. it is so nice to see you and your dad working cooperatively side by side... You just don't see that very much any more... i look forward to each video and to the completion of your project... That cabin will be a treasure trove of memories for you for the rest of your life.
MORE!!! I love your videos, and this was one of my favorite. I just wish it was longer. Going out into the night relying on your tractor and LED's was fantastic. Building a fire and sleeping in the bunk hours gave me a warm feeling of longing to be in a happier place. I need more videos like this. Thank you for what you do. BTW I ordered the light.
That headlamp is now on my x-mas list. Love watching your progress, happy to see you and your father working together... makes me laugh on how you two barely talk, but know just where the other needs you.
Your work to date has been just great Your cabin's rising quick Your tractors too are a help to you Their towing does the trick Every time we see you, you're always on the go That despite the sight of all the falling snow You seem real glad with help from Dad In every task you do Giving you his fathers care With everything you dare Be that old or new Each log you cut and quickly fit Makes one less to place and knit Until at last you'll stand aloof And apply it's crowning roof And then inside you can reside And sit beside your Dad A roaring cabin stove alight Above it all the stars will fill the night With best wishes for your continued safety and success in 2019
Nice to see you taking your time fitting the notches. It’s easy to compromise and say that’s close enough, but by taking time to fit them tight will leave you with no regrets later. As always it’s good to see your progress. Take care!
I'm always on the lookout for good tools. I appreciated the detail about the TH30 and have put it on my list. Would love a video (in your spare time ha ha!) about the power saws you are using - which one for what kind of work. I know zero about saws. I also got a LOT out of your notching demo. Thank you!!
Another great video your skill with a chainsaw as well of those of your father are superb. Good to see the bunkhouse again, if I remember rightly this was made mostly by your father. In years to come you will always look on fondly at the bunkhouse. It has sheltered you and stored your important equipment during the process of making your dream cabin for your family.
So I just found your youtube channel and have spent the past week watching all of your videos as I recover from knee replacement. I really enjoyed them all and love the fact that you work with your father and are a church member. When you said you had been inspired by Dick Proenneke, it really struck home for me as I have been inspired by him also. Keep up the good work!
YAY!!!! I've been waiting for weeks. So glad to see a vid from you. I can't imagine waiting until Christmas for another one, but I understand you are busy and very particular with your editing and such. The notches look perfect, the filming was wonderful and it's great to see you and your dad back at it. Thinking my husband may need a TH30 for Christmas. Once again, great vid and I appreciate your craftsmanship and generosity in taking us along. God Bless friend.
I have worked a fair amount with white cedar. Most of my experience has been with sidewall shingling. The longevity of white cedar is stunning. In Massachusetts one house built 200 years before, the nails were rusted through and the shingles were falling off the house. All the shingles were removed, more than half of them were still in good shape and simply turned over and reused on the reshingle. The Quincy Market Place in downtown Boston were originally wharves for the Port of Boston. Those solid block granite walls of the buildings were footed on cedar logs that were sunk into the harbor bed centuries ago. I was there, part of the reconstruction, in 1975 when they were excavated down to and inspected. Living in the noxious mud of Boston Harbor, completely anaerobic conditions, 20 feet down, when a chainsaw was fired up to inspect the wood, the cedar smell of fresh cuts permeated the entire site. The bark was a rotted black slimy mess,, but the wood beneath was as fresh as the day they were sunk and buried, both heart wood and sap wood. With wide overhangs, and the extreme care you took to foot the building, your cabin may become a time machine,, seeing into the future 200 or 300 years at the least. Your good work will be known and appreciated long after your name may be forgotten. There are few writers that can speak across centuries, but your novel, writ large, just might.
You have got this down to a science! Great job you 2! A house/ home is being born before our eyes.... Thanks for sharing... ATB from sunny Wintergarden, Florida😎!
I am impressed and I am enjoying watching how to build a log cabin. I learned how to paint by watching my husband paint our house. I feel like I could build a log cabin from watching your videos. I love to build things with wood like cages & picket fences and mend my deck. Problem is I am a 71 year old woman and everyone tells me I shouldn't be doing these things at my age. I might compromise and build a log house from a kit. You are fortunate to have a forest in your family and as a Canadian in Ontario I am curious what province you are in.
Window and door frames look different than in previous episode when you just put the nails in. Now every log has notch in it and there is an extra piece of wood around each frame.
Just wanted to say that I have enjoyed your vedios and wish to see more . You said that we would see how the log cabin is comming along so where is it? You and your father are doing a great job can't to see more thank you for your skills.
hey buddy, i missed you for a while. great to see you alive and kicking. those led lights are awesome. thanks for sharing, but be with us in a short time.
Hey Bro, I am building a 4m x 4m practice hewn cabin right now. My first time. The notches were the most difficult thing for me to figure out. After watching this video, they are sliding in nice and snug Thanks for the good videos, really helped me out there!
LOVING YOUR BUILD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [Sydney Australia]
Warning to every one, do not start to watch the outsider videos without a huge cup of coffee, because you will be seating for long time without moving, Thank you again guys, I wish I will live close by and help you, I bet when you guys are done with the cabin will be a great pleasure to seat outside and have a bottle of whisky to celebrate, well I guess I have to wait, since I dont want to skip and episode, I be right back I need more coffee...:)
Been using lights (LED) like that on my side by side for 10 years and man they are so much better then the old school bulbs. Believe the Thrunite i run is the TH10?? i have 3 lights from them and 2 take the same rechargeable battery and i love that. Great video as always!!
Something that my dad once remarked to my mom when; as moms do, went to check on him while he was working in their garage in the good ole' Texas summer heat. (he'd been out there too long) Exasperated and soaked in sweat, he answered her query with these terse immortal words; "I have CUT that thing and CUT that thing and CUT that thing and its STILL too short!" i love my dad :)
when you took that log from your father while he was working on it- at 2:30- that was just mean! Just kidding, your videos are very engaging and well made
It’s crazy, yesterday I went looking for an update from y’all since it’s been awhile lol I guess the new baby is taking up a lot of time. That said we’ll all be much older at the currant rate of completion. Let me know if you need help. The TH30 is amazing, the light quality and run time are unparalleled,I need one for sure! Cheers 👍
I don't know if this will be helpful or not, but I wanted to suggest scoring your notch line with a hand tool, like a chisel. It may not save you any time, and it may not even be worthwhile if you're using a chainsaw. It might give you a smoother notch and a tighter fit. I know time is a factor though. It's coming along nicely, I love seeing the updates.
Love your videos, I will never build a log cabin, but i have learned a lot on chain saw useage. Thought of spreading some crushed rock along your trail to make a better access road?
It is unfortunate for us that there is something else competing for your time and as a result you have had minimal progress on the cabin this year after making such a big jump in construction in 2017. Keep up the great work and work safe and as always continue to enjoy the time working with your Dad on a project you both are enjoying.
Enjoy your videos, love the tractor, am restoring one at the moment. Hope to build my own cabin one day. Would have bought head torch, but Amazon wont ship to Australia, ThruNite won't either and Amazon in Australia doesn't have anything. Oh well...
I have over 60 flashlights including 5 from Thrunite. One including the TH30 Headlamp. Here's my headlight collection. The Thrunite is my favorite. You can't beat a good old day.. father and son at work.
I usually don't like long videos but you can make them any length and I will still watch them!
Good on you for all you have accomplished working one day a week and the odd extra day here and there. I enjoy watching you and your Dad what team work. Its amazing. Will keep on watching. Do you have to buy the lot.I am sorry but I missed the are
That Thrunite flashlight is a must-have. So versatile and pricing won't break the bank. Anxious to see the next episode!
I admire the patience you have to do this. Great job!
Another great vid!!! Thanks! We love to see how you work with your dad.... make sure you take good care of him!!! We love your instruction on scribing the timbers!! Very nice and you are very talented in this process.... we know, we have tried many times!!! LOL! Take care :)

Mr. Outsider, just want you to know thoroughly enjoy watching you in the forest working with your dad. You remind me of my grandson. 🙌🙏❤️🙏🙌
I'm so envious. That forest is almost my idea of heaven.
That headlamp is now on my x-mas list. Love watching your progress, happy to see you and your father working together... makes me laugh on how you two barely talk, but know just where the other needs you.
Been a carpenter for 39 years. That’s good joinery.
oh man I can't imagine how peaceful will be to spend the night there...
Little slice of "hard work & heaven". Nice vid Josh, and good to see you and your Dad again. Thanks for the upload!
Your work to date has been just great
Your cabin's rising quick
Your tractors too are a help to you
Their towing does the trick
Every time we see you, you're always on the go
That despite the sight of all the falling snow
You seem real glad with help from Dad
In every task you do
Giving you his fathers care
With everything you dare
Be that old or new
Each log you cut and quickly fit
Makes one less to place and knit
Until at last you'll stand aloof
And apply it's crowning roof
And then inside you can reside
And sit beside your Dad
A roaring cabin stove alight
Above it all the stars will fill the night
With best wishes for your continued safety and success in 2019
Thanks for documenting this awesome project. Keep it up, always enjoy your videos.
This is so awesome. Thank you for posting this. Your method of doing saddle notches is excellent.
Nice to see you taking your time fitting the notches. It’s easy to compromise and say that’s close enough, but by taking time to fit them tight will leave you with no regrets later. As always it’s good to see your progress. Take care!
I wouldn't have thought to make my notches that way. Glad I seen you do it. Much easier now
Simple compass , and ability to work with your hands, woodcraft ! , instead of 200.00 for one with levels an shit on it , lol ,
I bought a TH30 after watching this video. I am very impressed with it. Thank you for your comments, very helpful.
It is coming together like magic! Well done, guys!
Nice going fellas!

I have been waiting for this video! I love watching these. Please keep them coming! and by the way, nice camera work, it looks great!
It was great to see your father in this video. 🕊🙏🏼🕊
GREAT! You are back again I missed you and your Dad.
REALLY YOU MADE YOUR DAD WALK ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE LOG AN ALL WAY BACK WOW!!!!
he could've easily hopped in the trailer

What an awesome journey! Thanks for sharing with the rest of us! Rootin for you man!
You guys are absolutely amazing. 'Alone in the Wilderness' was one of my first and favourite wilderness films.. you are really living the dream there.
Very informative. Brings back memories of my youth (although I never built a cabin). Thanks for that.

Ha ha ha yes! Too funny.
Mona Bale What's the old saying "measure twice, cut once"? I measured twice and it was still too short. lol

I think your best take was when you threw the spear at the tree joint and the tree went down.
Good video very interesting thanks Kat from upstate New York
Love your videos, I will never build a log cabin, but i have learned a lot on chain saw useage. Thought of spreading some crushed rock along your trail to make a better access road?
I suddenly have the urge to go play with Lincoln Logs.

Hey Bill Murray I live in Pinellas County and wish we had off grid areas here so we wouldn't have to fight the cold and snow.

Hi Outsider. Another great update video! How does the headlamp compare to your TN12 flashlight?
Thank you for sharing your technic, awesome
Oh yes finally you're back..so long waiting 💃👍
@Rick Thompson he had daughter & wife
very talented god bless you both and your famlies
I wonder how the cabin would look if built using Japanese joinery technique. It would take a whole lot longer that's for sure.
Hmm, seems to me there would be a side cutting bit to use to cut out grooves of the logs. Thanks for sharing and have a blessed week.
Impressive head lamp.

Is that red green???
@@thenumerousfew1205 My pic? That's a one minute self-portrait I did in Microsoft Paint on my computer, lol.
̇George H. Ok it looked like red green
3:41 lots of pairs of bioluminescent eyes watching you guys work the trees. I'm sure they are very impressed as are your viewing yt audience.
