- There are many female jazz vocalists that go unmentioned, of those is Betty Carter, who has a seminal impact of Improv Jazz, with her idiosyncratic vocal style, and lighting scat abilities. Carmen McRae once stated " There is really only one jazz singer, Betty Carter." Taken from my personal collection the original 1964 LP "Inside Better Carter" (1993 Re-Issue). All rights to Blue Note Records, Capitol Records, and EMI. Remember listen in HD.
I love the way she phrases her lyrics and sustains her notes . The vocal nuances she creates haunt the songs she sings with desire and longing.
Betty Carter is such a professional that it's a shame she is not talked about
Her voice At this young age, Is absolutely surreal... ♑♾️♋🍷🍷
Such a good song. 🤍
Two rare tracks of my favorite jazz singer ! Brilliant!
This is an extraordinary album. Betty Carter is a phenomenal artist, whose gorgeous voice and stylings have imprinted several of the songs from this album on my soul.
This is Always, Love her style, nobody can sing it like her!
There's a book about Betty Carter called Open the Door. It tells her life story. It's worth taking a look at.
I use to see her do every song on this album in person back in the 70s in Greenwich Village (NYC) at a little club called "The Needle's Eye". That's when I became aware of Betty Carter; fell in love with Betty Carter's style; phrasing and delivery!
She was a little woman, kind and pleasant to everyone; use to perform in that little cap with the bib turned a little off-center--it went along very very much with her persona!
She was just tops.

YEAH!!! THAT'S THE STUFF RIGHT THERE!!!
I would like to say thank you so much for making my Daddy so very happy we are from Michigan and he can't believe that internets as he say has access to these vocal stylings of such persons as Ms. Betty Bee Bop Carter of who he attempted to introduce himself to one even at Bakers Keyboard lounge in Detriot back in the 70's he's had her music and is currently singing along with every word!!!! again thank you Happy Holiday:}
Well, I did actually chat with this wonderful lady very briefly at Blues Alley in Geogetown many years ago! You see, I was sitting at the bar next to a large black gentleman who had his back to me when she stopped to talk to him. I wondered who I was next to, especially when someone who looked a lot like Oscar Peterson came up and joined in. I got to share a few words with Betty too. Later I found who I was sitting next to when he turned around a bit. It was Thelonius Monk. There are not days like that often!
The great Harold Mabern on piano. Love this.
I had never heard of Betty Carter. Until i saw a bbc4 play about Hattie Jacques. I only heard 2 lines of This is Always, in the background and i was inlove with Betty's voice. I love the internet. i just keyed in the 2 short lines of the song, and Betty Carter's voice flooded my ears. lovely!!
Betty Carter - one of a kind
....betty was something else....she was tops...no one has even come close to her style.....because they are not suppose to...she was one of a kind....
@Robert Lee, Countertenor Special - Indeed. Everything she touched was her 'special' song.
Rich, full, divine vocals.
Makes me consider marriage.
