Base Gravy • How to Make INDIAN CUR... - Хобби
Having been a chef for 25 years it is nice to get a different perspective from another budding chef/cook. Like many of the comments on all your videos, I don't think I have cooked so many curries over lockdown as I have in the past. My neighbours, family and friends all wait patiently for me to do a curry night. I don't have a large kitchen but still manage to produce 3 or 4 different curries with the base gravy recipe. Al, I believe you have kept me busy over lockdown, which in turn has kept me sane. Great work again and may it continue.
Yep, this was quick and easy for weeknight. Tasted great too. Can't knock it Al, thanks for the effort you've put into making these videos, they're priceless.
Just made this again Al. My wife's favorite is your Chicken tikka masala, but this comes a close second. I enjoy cooking your Currys as well as eating them. Very nice indeed.
Was abit skeptical with having tried so many recipes over the years, but the base gravy, madras and basic chicken curry has blown me away! No need for takeaways now, this is an exact replica if not better! Cheers mate
I made this tonight as well as your Vindaloo recipe, I used precooked chicken for both and they were awesome. This recipe is another winner Al!
Worked through a lot of your recipes in the last 3 months. I think this one might be my favourite. Basic but the flavours are great and the consistency of the sauce is perfect.
Loving your recipes and videos Al, going through one at a time. Had this on Tuesday, excellent!!
Just found you on you tube few weeks ago . Never made base gravy before until now yours was amazing the taste of my madras was better than some restaurants.. thanks for all your videos
Thanks Al! It turned out spot on, brilliant. I like the way you show every step and explain exactly why you do it too. Very satisfying
Hi Al. I really like the way you've put this recipe together. Great presentation as ever.
Great channels both of yours. Been cooking curries this way for a few years thanks to you, Al and Latiff too.
"this will be my last ladle".. pours gravy on hob.. I did this last night and managed to get hot chilli gravy straight in my eye! Love your recipes, Al really enjoying watching them and getting inspiration!!
Love your videos.
What size aluminium pan do you use to make curries
Al,ive made quite a few of your curries and also some from mistyricardo and the curry kid but i still keep.coming back to this one ,so quick and simple but tastes so good .can easily adjust spice heat with more or less chilli powder and have different proteins instead of chicken ,ie fish ,prawns, beef ,lamb etc and they work perfect.
Looks great! I'll be trying this. Love the channel Al.
Just made this for the millionth time, nothing basic about this Al !😍
I've just made my first batch of your base gravy and going to do this chicken curry later. Thanks Al.
Hi Al. Is this one ok with your Base Gravy No 2, Ive had it previously with Base No 1 and it's delicious with that but just made a load of No 2 to try out. Cheers!
Just what I needed, a nice simple but tasty curry recipe. Thanks Al, another great video.
Simplicity is sometimes all you need. Looks great Al. I will be giving this a go for sure. I suppose you could add chilli for heat.
Hi Al, made my first curry last night, Chicken Curry with your Base Gravy 1 and it was delicious. Everyone said it was better than our local curry house. Chicken Tikka next Saturday! Thank you!
Just had lunch and now I want my tea! Looks like I'll be making a curry or two!
Nice one Al - I'm a big curry fan but that basic curry still looks great and something ill try for the kids as they don't like hot and spicy. Keep up the good work man!
Just made this with base gravy 2. Excellent and really tasty. Keep up the good work Al...
Hi Al fantastic channel made your Base gravy then made you're madras it was lovely. Will try this curry sure it will be fantastic.
Nice and simple. All store cupboard ingredients and I don't need to go buy some strange stuff that I'll probably never use again. Thanks Al!
Great recipe Al, really enjoyed watching... Thanks for this! 🙏🏻😋
Glad you said that at the end about kids liking it because I'm making it for my 5 year old.im off to the supermarket now.
Simply fantastic tips and recipes Al so much nicer than some takeaways where consistency in the food varies. I have cooked both dhansak and Parthia this week and where delicious.
Absolutely gorgeous, far more than a basic chicken curry 😋
Hi Al, do you have the heat really high when you are cooking the sauce before adding the chicken ?.
I cooked this today for my family and it was absolutely superb, I will try your other dishes as well but better not try and run before I can walk.
I'm surprised you don't have more subscribers your recipes are amazing

Haha, yes. Indian grocers love Al -- but Indian restaurants not so much! :D
That curry will be so ideal for twelve of us going camping for a week in St David's 21st July I crave my curry fix when camping
Great video! Thanks!
Hi made this today using exactly as shown absolutely 💯 delicious banging!
is there any brand of base gravy you would recommend to buy?
Hi Al and thank you for the great recipes. Could you please specify how much chicken should be used for this recipe?
This is fantastic. The kids love it. Thanks Al.
love this simple to make curry so tasty.thanks
Thanks Al.. another excellent video 👍
That's what I do after I followed your base gravy video I make 10 litres
would it ok to refreeze it if I don't use it all when making a curry
cheers
Wonderful video I love curry's of all kinds but my favorite ones have lots of gravy, I prefer them over the dry curries as I love to dip my Nan and paratas into the curry gravy THANKS AL GREAT JOB!
Thumbs up again Al 👍👏👏👏
I've been trying to get more into currys. I made your base gravy and used it to make your chicken korma and it was excellent. Are there any of your currys in the milder side (not so hot) that you would recommend me to try? I'm probably gonna try this one later in the week with some chips :)
Mango Chicken Tikka Masala would be quite mild. Al if you read this, I can't see a Passanda recipe on your channel, that would be another good mild curry for you to do a video on. :)
Al, great videos. Do you do jeera? If so, how.
I can’t wait to do this tonight and make a chicken curry pizza.. I think once spread on a pizza base and put in the oven for 8-10 mins, it’ll be fantastic.. thanks Al
Although simple that's really tasty! Thanks Al.
Awesome Al going to give this a go tomorrow ! I will give you my feedback 😁
Brilliant !!! Where's your restaurant mate? Thanks for sharing
Brilliant suff Al lovely curry. If you wanted to include onions when would they go in.
Hey Al,my favourite BIR just closed down and I can't find a recipe for the best dish they used to serve. It was called Lamb Nashilee and was described on the menu as 'Tender fillets of lamb in a thick chilli ginger sauce, spicy hot', any ideas? Thanks.
hi al does the spice get into the chicken if you dont leave it to marinate befor hand
Simples! Nice one Al!
Love your videos Al,
Hi Al, can you use mustard oil instead of veg oil in this curry?
Nice one Al. Known as Staff Curry up here ;)
Hi Al, Thank you so much for putting these videos up and I hope your channel is the success it deserves to be. Made the base gravy and it is a revelation. Trying the basic curry tonight and will progress onto your other recipes after I master that. Could you tell me the quantity's in which to store it in the freezer as i don't want to waste any ?
thanks again Al
to store the base gravy that is, thanks
Great curries, and well described and explained as always Al.
Makes me really hungry and envious when you do the taste test at the end, and I have to settle for a couple of rounds of cheese on toast at the end of the night.
Need to make some of your excellent base gravy again, very soon!!!
Thanks for post. I love cheese on toast. Lol
Al. How do you know when the garlic and ginger is cooked. So you can move onto the next stage.
Hi al I’ve recently found your channel and we’re wondering if you do a lamb saag dish it’s my favourite from any Indian restaurant
best curry everr thanks Al
Today I made base gravy following Als recipe. It was a much better attempt than last time.
Followed Als recipe for basic curry...only had hot chilli powder in so ended up with something resembling a madras in strength - love it! 😀
Great 👍
Hi AL can you tell me how to do this if I was to make a curry using the full amount of your basic source making a curry to feed A group of around about 10 people so what I mean by this is basically just one big pot of curry so can you make a video showing how many spices you would put in with Curry on the scale to feed 10 people
Hi Al just made this and the entire family have given this the thumbs up Cheers mate

Just made this for weeknight dinner - easy, quick and tasty - just right for cold nights drawing in. Have made enough for tomorrow as well ;o)

Perfect for a mid week supper. No faff!
Hi Al I just watched the chickem curry recipe and I notice you have not mentioned the quantity of fresh chicken to use for 2 persons.
I'd like to try this. How much is a big pinch? 1/4 teaspoon? 1/2 teaspoon?

Mike Try my kfc chicken Pakora recipe.
Hi Al, how long can you keep Base Gravy in the freezer for ? I've had mine in for about a month now.
Six months easy Ben
Thanks AL. I think it is curry time tomorrow.
Hi Al, brilliant as always but is there a chance that you could put a video up of another base gravy that we can use?
Different recipe you mean
yes indeedy, I have obviously varied your original recipe - added coconut milk and sometimes more or less sugar etc less or more and sometimes different spices etc. I once watched a Gordon Ramsey program where the same base gravy was used in a restaurant where the customers were encouraged to "make your own curry" and Gordon commented that because the base gravy was the same the finished curry was not that different to each other in taste... I have found that when cooking with your base gravy, the actual finished article is very similar to each other. I think your channel would definitely benefit from a choice of different base gravy recipes. I hope that this comment is taken in the constructive manner as it is meant. I love your passion, I love your channel and I love curry.
Do you have any naan bread recipes
Finally getting round to making your base curry over the next few days.
Vindaloo and basic curry on demand seems pretty sweet to me!
Good stuff again Al. Love it
Scotty
Nice one jobs a good un.
Hiya this looks a lovely curry, is this only mild or medium spiced curry please
Hi. Its mild
Al's Kitchen thank you if i was to make it more medium how much chilli powder would you reckon i should put in please

What kind of cooking oil is best with these curry dishes?
You can use a variety. Vegetable oil, coconut oil, rapeseed oil.
Al on your ingredients list you missed off the Coriander ,Lucky i watched the full vid when i 1st made it...The kids love this one im always making it for them
Yeah. Sometimes I chop things by mistake in the edit. I always type the ingredients out in the description box below the video. Kids love this curry. It will probably get them into curries for the rest of their lives lol. Thx
Legend
Hi al love your recipes I just been diagnosed with chrons disease but still love a good curry have you any idea on recipes for bad tummy suffer like me and people with ins? I no it a challenge lol
My son has chrohns disease so know first hand what is like. Its very different because the user of any spices can upset your stomach. I would suggest taking out the chilli and just using the regular less harsh spices and see how you go. Good luck
