Le Guin is my all time favourite author; I guess I count as an obsessive fan - I own all her works of fiction. So I was pleased to find someone sharing my view of the value and importance of this story. Two observations: the citizens of Omelas are forced to know about the suffering child - in our society, many go to great lengths to avoid having to confront the hidden suffering that sustains us; walking away is an expression of existentialism - those who walk away appear to care most about their responsibility for their own actions, it can be argued, not for the suffering of the child. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I agree that Le Guin’s story confronts uncomfortable truths, and the existentialist perspective on walking away is a powerful interpretation.
