Having travelled on both old and new Eurostar units between London and France (in what was Standard Premier), I much prefer the older units; far more comfortable and smooth running. The E320s might be light and airy but they just feel like any other high speed train. The original units felt, somehow, special and unique.

I disagree the seats are cramped and way too small, the headrest in the old train is lower than my husbands shoulders. The new ones are much better, for taller people.

    • @WilliamMitchell-gq2nx

Could not agree more. The new ones are cheap and plasticky and suffer from all the design flaws of typical modern trains : Uncomfortable seats that are too firm and too upright; seats not aligned with windows; crappy liquid toilets; bright, cold lighting making it impossible to sleep or even just relax. It’s just another moving torture chamber. Well done to Eurostar who have perfectly replicated both the Ryanair colour scheme and onboard experience.

Paris-Brussels was previously quite chaotic. Practically all once-every-hour services (definitely not enough departures) would sell out far in advance due to the low-capacity TGV-based trains, and Thalys (or more recently Eurostar) did not feel the need to add more capacity due to lack of competition for ridership.

Only german ICE are worse on this aspect (as a rule I now avoid travelling by train in Germany…) The price is indeed star. The Siemens e320 EMUs are equipped to Eurotunnel standards, with almost 400 meters between each communication branch, watertight and designed to withstand fire and noxious fumes for half an hour. The train's batteries are designed to enable it to exit the tunnel in the event of a catenary failure.
The TGV 3800(PBA) & 4300(PBKA) were not designed for this Channel crossing, and since October 2023 have been called Eurostar trains, Eurostar Red, Eurostar Snow, Eurostar Sun.
In 1987, a political decision in Brussels gave birth to the LGV Nord Europe. The project came to fruition in 1996 with the Thalys TGV under the name of West Rail International, a cooperative company under Belgian law owned by SNCF and operated jointly with 4 rail operators: SNCF, SNCB, DB and NS.
In 2015, following double competition between DB Fernverkehr and Thalys on the same lines, Deutsche Bahn sold its 10% stake to the new holding company THI Factory: SNCF 60% and SNCB 40% in partnership with NS. Thalys is 100% owned by the THI Factory holding company.
In 2022, Eurostar Ltd and THI Factory (Thalys) merge to form a holding company, the Eurostar Group, owned 100% by Eurostar Ltd and 100% by THI Factory, which previously owned 100% of Thalys. SNCF Voyageurs is the majority shareholder, with a 55.75% stake. Although the merger has been effective since 2022, it had been planned for 2019, but poor results following a 95% drop in traffic, and a failed turnaround despite the modernization of Thalys trains, almost made the name and the trains disappear, which would have been the worst-case scenario as Eurostar Ltd was also in the red.
Eurostar is much more promising than the Thalys name, acquired by a holding company created in 2022 which owns 100% of Eurostar. Following this Thalys merger, approved by the European Commission, a holding company, Eurostar Group, was created. Eurostar Group is backed by SNCF (55.75%), CDQP (19.31%), SNCB (18.5%) and Federated Hermes Infrastructure (6.44%). Eurostar is majority-owned by SNCF voyages, whose president Gwendoline Cazenave is the former head of SNCF voyages, the SNCF subsidiary that runs the TGV à Oui. @@lausimeyer6558 CDPQ is the majority shareholder in Alstom and co-shareholder in Eurostar. I'd be surprised if it bought the Velaro trains from Siemens, and DB Fernverkehr is about to get involved in this cross-Channel link.
Eurostar is a rail company that operates high-speed trains between France, Belgium, the UK and the Netherlands. Eurostar belongs to the Eurostar Group, a holding company which also owns Thalys. The group was created in April 2022, following the merger of two entities: Eurostar Ltd and THI Factory (Thalys). Together, they formed a holding company owned 100% by Eurostar Ltd and 100% by THI Factory, which previously owned 100% of Thalys.
SNCF Voyageurs is Eurostar's majority shareholder, with a 55.75% stake, followed by the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec with 19.31%, Belgium's SNCB with 18.5%, and funds managed by Federal Hermes Infrastructure with 6.44%.Gwendoline Cazenave, a former SNCF employee, is in charge of Eurostar.
Only the Eurostar brand will be definitively retained in October 2023. Eurostar Blue (17 e320) handles cross-Channel traffic, while Eurostar Red, formerly Thalys, serves Brussels, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Amsterdam (9 TGV 3800 PBA) and Liège, as well as Düsseldorf and Cologne (17 TGV 4300 PBKA). Eurostar Snow operates once a season for winter sports, and Eurostar Sun to discover the south of France all year round.
Thalys has launched a new program to completely modernize the interiors of its TGVs in 2019-a new program called Rubis. To this end, the first unit to be sent to the SNCF Technicentre Industriel in Hellemmes, on the eastern outskirts of Lille, is PBKA 4341, which will leave the factory in January 2021. Technical problems and, inevitably, complications linked to the coronavirus pandemic affected the project, so that the official presentation only took place on October 27, 2021, during a special trip from Brussels to Paris. The 4341 now sports a new ruby paintwork reminiscent of the design of the legendary "Le Capitole" expresses of the 1970s. It also features a decorative gray line under the front window, as well as new horizontal lines all around. Dubbed the Thalys of tomorrow, this refurbishment aims to offer "a high level of comfort for tomorrow's international rail services". To achieve this, the operator first conducted a survey of 5,000 passengers, then called in the Belgian design studio Yellow Window, which was also tasked with increasing the train's capacity by 28 seats, or 7.5%. To achieve this, the existing on-board bistro was transformed into a bar area called the Kiosk, which reflects the current travel habits of Thalys customers and is equipped with drink and snack dispensers featuring 14 organic products. The ten-car TGV PBKA 4341 (including two power cars) now has 399 seats, including 288 in Standard class and 111 in Comfort and Premium classes. The work also includes the installation of new seats, LED lighting, USB sockets and new information screens (22 pieces), as well as the replacement of floor mats and wall coverings, etc. The luggage compartment has been enlarged by 15%, providing space for 400 suitcases. The first TGV ruby entered service on October 28 on the Paris-Amsterdam line. Operation of the Paris-Dortmund line via Brussels, Liège, Aachen, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Duisburg and Essen is scheduled for 2022. Thalys plans to renew its entire TGV fleet, representing an investment of at least €150 million. Further modernized trains should be ready in 2022 and 2023, and the project should be completed by the end of 2024.
Eurostar announced on October 31 that its high-speed train service between Amsterdam Centraal and London St Pancras, suspended since June 15, would resume in early 2025.
Cross-Channel Eurostar trains to Amsterdam are suspended until 2025, with Brussels becoming the new temporary terminal for London.
In 2030, Amsterdam-Zuid will become the new terminal for international connections.
It will be one of the largest economic hubs in the Netherlands, with direct connections from Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Utrecht and Cologne with NS International. To accommodate Eurostar trains, the station will be equipped with a fifth and sixth track.
Expansion of the rail network in the capital is necessary, as the number of passengers in the Amsterdam region is set to increase considerably in the coming years. In addition, the number of tracks at Amsterdam Central Station will be reduced, but not the number of platforms. As the current platforms are too narrow to cope with the expected increase in passenger numbers from 200,000 to 275,000 per day by 2030, it is planned to remove the middle three tracks between two platforms. This will reduce station capacity, as trains running simultaneously on two platforms will no longer be able to use the middle track. This is also one of the reasons why international connections will pass through Amsterdam-South station from 2030 onwards.
