Even tho a lot of Anthony’s lyrics in RHCP probably don’t have any meaning to uncover, quite a few do. My source is that I’m an English major who studies poetry. I think of songs like ‘Wet Sand’, ‘Venice Queen,’ ‘Sick Love’, and ‘In the Snow.’ Those songs all have profound meaning and thoughtful lyricism. Above all else, he just knows what to do with the song sonically. ‘Can’t stop’ is a good example.
The funny thing about that Red Hot Chilli Peppers moment at 8:42 is that how it came about is actually pretty sweet and adorable. “While writing the album in Flea's garage his daughter would listen to their songs. At the time of writing, Kiedis was struggling to come up with lyrics for the songs, so just filled in with scat. When a final draft of the album was made and Flea's daughter listened to the final version, she was disappointed that the scat had been removed. So, on the final version of the song in the last chorus, the original scatting vocal was used instead.”
I’ve always found the discredit for Kiedis’s lyrics pretty funny. Songs like Venice Queen, Don’t Forget Me, Otherside, The Hunter, Power of Equality, Fight like a Brave, Californication (just to name a few) have a TON of meaning. Personally I love trying to figure out lyrics and what the message is behind them.. it was a big reason why I got into the Chili Peppers. Anthony does not get enough credit for what he brings to the band. Just my 2 cents
@@marshalllittle2098Just because it’s overplayed doesn’t mean it’s bad. Stadium Arcadium has some great songs on it though, some silly and some pretty deep
Imo Kurt Cobain was a master at saying nothing while saying a whole lot with his lyrics. Dude was a true poet even though his lyrics you could argue dont have any deep meanings behind them but they do at the same time. One of the best songwriters of all time
The randomness in lyrics that happen in a lot of RHCP songs are why I love this band. The music combined with them always makes me have a good time listening to them. That and I can’t help but sing along as well 😂
Cocteau Twins has to be the prime example. I don't know what any of the songs mean, but the vocal melodies are perfect. I also do love bands that sang in languages that aren't my native tongue like Legião Urbana, Asylum Party, Alcest, and the best example of Nena '99 Luftballons'.
Alcest are amazing. 99 Luftballons is about well.. Balloons flying around and then the world ends. I'm German and I always thought of it as just her turning a random idea into pop song and having fun idk if it has a deeper meaning. The other song by her irgendwie irgendwo irgendwann is a banger tho😂
Legião Urbana were definitely high up on the list of best Brazilian artists. Renato Russo's poetry is introspective and heartbreaking, and of course the music itself is amazing. Love that others out there are recognizing it!
I remember hearing those new RHCP singles "Tippa My Tongue" and "Black Summer" on the radio and laughing my ass off at the gibberish coming out of his mouth. XD
Sigur Rós’s 3rd album “( )” is all sang in Hopelandic, a scat like form of Icelandic, it’s basically Jónsi (the frontman) using his voice as an instrument, it’s hauntingly beautiful like much of post rock!
I've definitely noticed over the years I'm more interested in the music than lyrics 99% of the time. Not to say lyrics are useless by any means, but if I don't like the music to begin with it's hard to care about lyrics. As much as Yes get occasionally ridiculed for that and Pink Floyd have messages and lyrics that still resonate with people to this day, I probably would go as far as say I prefer Yes over Pink Floyd, at least for now.
RHCP and Fall Out Boy are the two poster children of this for me, and I like them both for it. Sometimes I just want some cool music and whatever random lyrics that fit the vibe. Kiss is another band like that, like what’s “Under The Gun” about? Idk but it’s a fun 80s hair metal song.
I would add Dance Gavin Dance to this list, for similar reasons to RHCP in that many of their lyrics are more about what they sound like in full context with the music rather than what the lyrics themselves are saying. Especially Jon Mess.
I like what Chris Cornell said about his lyrics which they meant something to him but he was creating an environment a listener could go into and make their own story or interpretation.
Unfortunately my brain runs first and foremost on words so it's sometimes hard for me to separate nonsensical lyrics from good music. I've often said things like "I would really like Train if I didn't speak english." 😂
RHCP is the perfect example of this. Also mega short version, this reminds me of a teacher I had back in middle school who was a preacher and Man in the Box was his favorite song until he looked up the lyrics
Three of my all-time favourite bands in this video: Jamiroquai, System Of A Down and the Chili Peppers. Nice. People talk about Kiedis not having any vocal talent, but whenever I see a Chili Peppers tribute act, the vocals are the one thing that never sound right, literally 100% of the time. Say what you want about Kiedis, but his lyrics and sound/timbre fit their music like a (velvet) glove.
I've heard someone say that Jon Anderson treats his voice like its own instrument instead of a tool to convey lyrics, and I think that's the best way to describe it.
A couple other bands I can think of that could fit the bill is Cannibal Corpse and Primus. Cannibal Corpse just focuses on the music and writes lyrics as if they were a horror movie and Primus are just straight up silly and funky at the same time.
Primus has brilliant lyrics, but they are very much surrealism. Some do have stories behind them like Sailing the Seas of Cheese was about being musicians during the time Vanilla Ice and other garbage were topping the charts.
Anthony Kiedis is so funny. One song you have the profound, 'space my be the final frontier, but it's made in a Hollywood basement,' and the next it's, 'up to your ass in alligators, let's get it on with the alligator haters.' You're just left there like ah, I see, makes perfect sense (?????)
I would say king gizzard is one, but their lyrics do have meaning a lot of the time. It's just that the lyrics aren't integral at all to enjoying the music
Suggestion for part 2: The White Stripes, or Jack White projects in general. Personally I feel like his guitar playing and the music overall is the main draw over the lyrics. Ball and Biscuit is a prime example.
Yeah, I agree. But I also kinda feel Jack White is original as a guitar player and creative, but his overall skill is mid AF. He likes to play on crappy guitars which is cool, but throw some studio mastering magic you can make anything sound much better. I played a customized garbage quality guitar called affectionately "The Polished Turd" for many years and people offered me up to 800 bucks for it and I would never sell it. But it was my playing and my studio mastering of recordings of it that made it sound good. I broke down and got a rare early 80s Japanese Strat and customized that and wish now I had not played "The Turd" for so long bc now I am way better and it plays so much easier to the point that it feels like cheating.
It's mainly electronic and synth music for me. For example St. Lucia are one of my favorites, although the lyrics are pretty bland and straightforward but they capture the feeling really well.
There are some great Deftones songs that are just complete fantasy, I think the further they get into their discography the less and less they pull from real life experiences.
Steve Howe is an amazing guitarist and yes I listen to Yes for their instrument work adn arrangements. Drama is a brilliantly weird album. Give it a whirl.
Magma should be on this list absolutely, because Christian Vander basically just made up a language to make it sound phonetic. Basically it is supposed to be like an instrument. And they are an excellent band just a very underrated band due to how niche Magma is as a band.
depends. there are some songs that are carried by its melody and there are some songs that are purely carried by it's lyrics. As long as it connects with you that's all that matters.
Manic Street Preachers have very deep and politically charged lyrics, but the way James Dean Bradford sings them sometimes make them hard to figure out. They're still amazing though. (LOVE the Jamiroquai mention BTW)
Im a HUGE manics fan and I literally had to read the lyrics on the cd cases as I had no idea what he was saying most of the time. We're going to see them next year and my mams decided to Google their lyrics while we listen to them so she can actually know what's being said 😂. I think what he's saying is a lot clearer on songs like you stole the sun from my heart as he isn't having to cram loads in at once as he did in their early stuff (mainly due to Richey writing very wordy, but fantastic, lyrics). Nickys more simplistic style has helped JBD be a lot clearer nowadays.
A lot of Tony's lyrics have meaning, but he knows that songs mean different things to different people, so whatever inspired him to write a song is not going to be what the song means to the listener. So, someone he just rolls with whatever to help nurture that.
I would too, especially their earlier songs. Some of them are so weird that you could listen to them and then look at the lyrics and think they were words for a totally different song. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the first R.E.M. album was called "Murmur" for that exact reason.
Well I think what matters isnt necessarily the lyrics its how you go about it. Deciding how you are going to handle lyric writing and what part you want those lyrics to play is important. With yes the lyrics are all about how it sounds when sung, the rest be damned, to Electric Callboy, its about the lyrics being fun. For Linkin Park it was emotional honestly and clarity, for Eminem who fucking knows but you could argue its about picking apart the world around him with a web of wordplay and double entedere, and for some bands they might as well treat it like they're creating epic poems with a backing track as opposed to songs. Even for bands that have "meaningful" lyrics, it doesn't necessarily matter. I like a lot of grunge music and when listening to it, half the time I can't even understand what's being said.
