Dr. King like every human being was a sinner. Islam acknowledge that human beings are inherently imperfect and prone to making mistakes, read sura 53:32. The beauty of sinning or making mistakes lies in repentance-turning back to Allah after you committed the sin. Sinning serve as a reminder of our dependent on Allah. Allah's mercy is vast and sincere repentance leads to forgiveness. Prophet Muhammad said, if you did not commit sin Allah would replace with a people who would commit sin. We are not angels. Allah already angels. Imam Muhammad is not known to be a man who acts before he thinks. Allah mankind to do more self reflection. Read sura 49:11, Oh you who believed. "Let not a people ridicule (another) people; perhaps they may be better than them
I will forever pray for my grandmother soul. She never ever turned her back on me even when I was an atheist. She prayed that I would change. I did. I became a muslim.

Dr. King committed the greatest sin of all which is shirk. Dr. King worshipped Jesus. Did he repent from that sin before he died? If Dr. King died worshipping Jesus it is not permissible to pray for him. Allah said: It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of Hellfire. (Chapter 9 verse 113)
