For this video, I decided to give myself a photography challenge for the day (shooting with the Fuji GFX100S and Contax Planar 45mm), while driving home along the coast from my recent trip out to Dartmoor. I also talk about five different photography challenges that you can give yourself that will help spark creativity. I'm a big believer that these micro-challenges are the key to developing your creative vision and finding direction. Hope you enjoy it!

For a one-man team on location, the production quality of your videos just floors me each week-such good stuff to watch over a coffee-and fantastic advice as well!
I appreciate that, Thomas. Thank you!
Cruising along the coast with the camera stopping when you feel like it, sounds like a great day 👌 Lovely shots Kyle, might have to try a few of those challenges.
Cheers! A good day, indeed. :)
I'm looking forward to a good summer vacation road trip. For me this is the best time to experiment. Every location is new and you can't expect keepers. So you just have fun and try some things out. In the end there are always images that you love and go back to.
Absolutely. Having fun and experimenting is a huge part of what photography should be about! :)
I love setting little challenges. Especially for those “boring” days. My last challenge was to shoot a roll of film twice in two hours to get 36 double exposures. Much more interesting than the cloudy day I shot on
Nice, love the idea of that one!
Great to see you in my neck of the woods - and capture things I hadn’t thought of. Fab video.
Thanks, Gareth. It's a fun area to explore!
That frame with the boats in mud and accents of orange was really good work. Enjoyed the video
Thanks, David. That was one of my favourites. :)
You make the best photography videos I've come across on RUclips. Fantastic production, great music, beautiful images, gear and theory, digital and film. Bravo!
Thank you, Patrick!
Perfect, I was out of ideas for my morning walk and photo exercises in the boring streets of my suburb. I love the idea of projects, I'll see what I would miss if I wasn't looking for it!
You have a great take on mindset in photography, I started with a film camera in the 70"s and struggled to transition to digital. Now with Fuji, I'm starting to feel at home with a camera in my hand again.
Now the question will be my mindset transition from a "person who takes photos, to think of myself as a photographer and if that matters?" I don't care if takes the rest of my life, the journey has started! Thanks for being such an awesome guide.
Thanks, Jennifer! I appreciate that. And glad to hear you enjoyed the video.
Man I love your channel! Thank you for sharing with us! That beach is amazing
Damn that imagine on 8:22 is soooo nice! The sign on the road makes it look like an extreme wide angle and the colors... !
Thanks, Benn!
Fun video! Looooove the third image. The composition and lighting is fantastic.
The life preserver on the wooden shed and pier, loved that image!
Thanks, Greg!
Thanks as always for a the inspiration- simple tips but they have a profound impact!
You're welcome. Cheers!
One of the best in the games 🔥🔥🔥
Awesome video!!!!! Thank you for sharing ☺️
Beautiful creation. You have a wonderful sensibility and quality to all your work. I love the tone softness to the filming. I want to get that same feeling to my video footage.
Thank you, Andrew. :)
Good one Kyle, expanding the creativity!
Cheers, John!
Love this episode, your little challenge ideas are great and I think the photos turned out awesome, too! I need to try things like this myself to keep shooting and learning so inspiration is always welcome :)
Glad you enjoyed!
Great video Kyle. Great idea, to get you out of the box. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed, Jerry. Thanks for watching!
Love this video! It was whimsical with great music. Nice tips, too!
Cheers, Jay.
Love the frame at 8:25 man, looks so peaceful.
Thanks, Dylan.
Thank you for this video. I own the Contax Carl Zeiss 45mm 2.8 and it’s a beautiful lens with amazing rendition but I think it really shines in black and white. I will purchase the 35-70mm f3.4 partly due to your review. Love your page.
You're welcome. Cheers!
Killer shots as always Kyle! 🙌🏼
Thank you, Nick!
Really interesting one this Kyle! Might have to challenge myself with these 5 over Easter Weekend :) Thanks Kyle.
Cheers, Daniel.
Photos are cool, give yourself more challenges seems to work well
Cheers, Maxim. :)
I particularly love the images in this episode
Thanks, Daniel!
really super, great colour and compositions.
Thank you!
#5 & #10 were amazing!!
Thanks, Michael.
Hi Kyle! Lovely video (as usual). I recently got a GFX as well. Am wondering which of the full frame lenses you’ve adapted, cover the full GFX sensor? Do the Contax lenses cover it?
Great video, and some wonderful images.
Thank you. :)
Thanks Kyle!
Thanks for bringing this up. You brought on some new ideas of challenges to explore.
I made the first challenge a couple of weeks ago. I went ot on a misty day with a flash. I had no TTL but it could be used of camera. I'm not at all experienced in flash photography and even less when mixing it with ambient light. Really fun challenge and I think I made some interesting images. Kind of leveled up my tool box so to say. The fear of bring flash diminish.
Have a great day.
/Robert
Cheers, Robert. Always good to try new things like that. Get's you outside of your comfort zone and helps you learn a few new things as well.
@@KyleMcDougall it truly does. And if you don't come home with any keepers you at least had a bit if fun and learnt some valuable lessons.
I'm not sure but I feel like this type of free flowing way of shooting maybe is a little outside of your comfort zone cause your work has been pretty pre-meditated for a bit now? But I really liked these photos man and this video really made me want to go out there and shoot
Glad you enjoyed this one. And yep, definitely a style of shooting that I haven't done for a while now. It was a nice change!
Great content as always. And I have to say image are quite different to what you usually shoot. But they do look really nice. Do you mind me asking to clarify what settings were used on classic neg?
Thanks. This was just the standard classic neg profile, and I believe I softened the contrast a bit with the shadows/highlights adjustment in camera.
Awesome thanks for getting back to me Kyle! Happy shooting
Does the Planar cover the sensor or did you choose a crop mode to eliminate vignetting? Thanks.
It does cover the sensor with some smearing in the corners. This was 35mm crop though. So little off the top and bottom.
Hi i have 2 tessar 45 & 50 contax and exakta. 2 differnt tessar i tink contax tessar very good for color Photography and exakta tessar fo b&w.
how does it work with a 35mm format lens on a bigger sensor? does it make the 45 like a 35 or something? also i think this is the first time ive seen you shoot on a sunny day😂 usually is like raining or cloudy.
Yep, you got it. Focal length is the same regardless of what the lens was made for.
Have been very intersted in this camera for a while. But really curious if I'd be able to use my contax/zeiss collection I love. Do you have to crop or is there coverage? Love your videos, thanks so much for them.
Hey Brendan, it depends on the lens you're using. The 45mm covers with slight vignetting.
@@KyleMcDougall Thanks for the reply. Am about to pull the trigger on a 100S but have a whole set of Contax Zeiss Primes I just collected over the past year and would be thrilled if I get to use them on it. When I saw you using the adorable 45 in this video I got so stoked. Thanks again for the great work.

Love the look of the Contax lens on the body… Were your shooting in a crop mode on the camera?
Hey Edward, was shooting in 3:2.
Been in a creative rut for a few weeks now and this was really helpful. Do you have any favorite film recipes? Mine are Gold 200 and Tri-X 400
Happy to hear that. I haven't experimented with too many other than the built in Fuji sims.
You using the GFX100S as your vlog camera too, Kyle?
Nope. Using the X-T4. :)
where is this? i will love to visit? it seems its somewhere in the UK
Yes it is in the UK, along the south coast near Dartmoor as the final scene was Durdle Door in Dorset, England.
The first seaside town was Sidmouth in Devon
Unless you are using Contax 645 lenses its a fail
