I was fortunate enough to see him live in Glasgow, UK, a few years ago. Despite his age he put on a good show that was unique - he didn't just rest on his past success and songs but made it a special and well thought out concert. Poet and song writer - a rare combination!
The voice of generations! A pivotal musical force! Immortal and immeasurable! His lyrics speak to time eternal! The voice of the common man! That is Paul Simon! Timeless!
This song has touched my soul since I was 14yrs old...to this day breaks me down at 68yrs. May we all be touched and thereby still have hope for humanity!!!
@@lynnmusiccowgirlely122 "Hope for humanity" may very well be the key takeaway. Like many people, I've been mired in negativity and divisive BS lately. This performance woke something up inside me. Shook something loose. It reminded me of that hope.
The greatness of Paul Simon cannot be overstated . And through his wonderful music he will live on long after all of us have gone . Excellent video , Thank You so Much for sharing it .
Still remember Paul Simon singing this on Saturday Night Live shortly after Sept 11. Stark, stunning, heartbreaking, yet so very, very triumphant. What America needed that night.
Bob Dylan, Paul Simon & Stevie Wonder.... the Mt. Rushmore of American songwriters in the winter of their years. Oh, how I will weep when they are gone.
I am an old man, been to many concerts and will never forget the reunion tour concert of Simon and Garfunkel held in Dallas. The best concert I ever attended.
The Sweats will remember that for the rest of their lives, my fav’ band with the greatest composer of contemporary songs ever, there will never, be another like him.
A National Treasure. At age 80 we don't have a lot of time left with Paul Simon....ditto Bob Dylan (81), Jerry Lee Lewis (86) and legend Brian Wilson (80). Enjoy them while we can!
Man, the number of fantastic musicians on that stage is amazing. Lucius (well 2/5ths of them), Rihannon Giddens, Natalie Merchant, Nathaniel Rateliff, just an amazing group.
You know I use to be a freelance writer and had over 200 articles published. But there are no words that can truly convey how great of a song writer, singer and performer. Paul Simon is!
I've never heard anyone better, or even as good. The funny thing is, I didn't recognize him at first due to the extra grey hair since I last saw him. So first I thought, wow this guy plays as well as Jerry! Then I scrolled down and saw his name.
One of the greatest songs ever written. It blew me away when it was first released, and it continues to effect me still; "... and the fighter still remains".
Ah, so very bittersweet. The sense of loneliness and poverty this song evoked so intensely when I first heard it in 1970 at age 14 has smoothed into soft sadness and regret. But the fighter still remains...
Thank you Mr. Simon! Thank you for what you wrote, for the joy that you brought. Please come back to perform, even if it is only a short session. My god is this music good
Great song still. I often quietly sing the chorus “Lie la lie…” while at work, most of my patients instantly know the song and join in with me, smiles all round ❤️
I Know we probably will never hear Paul and Artie sing together again. I've watched both Paul Simon videos in this show and man !! Listening to the power, purity, vulnerability, beauty of his aging voice makes me wonder if we as humans will be able to contain our hearts and emotions listening to those 2 harmonise again without totally breaking down in tears. Sadly I don't believe music and songwriting will ever get to this level again.
This was fantastic! Paul has given us some amazing music over the years. But he was in good company on that stage. Especially the guys on stage.. There are many amazing artists out there, you just gotta find them! But we can thank Paul for all of his contributions to music in general. He is one of the great legends of our time, no question.
The original studio version of The Boxer has to be the most 'complete' recording ever made - immaculate lyrics, beautiful harmony, a crowd singalong chorus, melody, acoustic warmth, ethereal sound for the solo, the echoing drum hits, and the deep, rumbling sounds coming in right at the end. It's hard to think of another recording which comes close - possibly Good Vibrations, or A Day In The Life perhaps, but none which top The Boxer.
@@chipdayton1625 Just watched it. It's good. 👍 The song obviously works well with a lot of arrangements, even down to one person with a guitar. It's just that that original recording has so many elements which take it to another level entirely. (IMHO 😉)
@@chipdayton1625 Why have so many women recorded this? It's written for a man (a woman would be trying to avoid the punters on 7th Avenue). Makes as much sense as a man singing Testimony by Ferron.
Growing up listening to the boxer made me cry every time and it never made sense to me why. Your comment made something click in my brain and I know why. Thanks for understanding the song so well. It will always be one of my very favorite songs
Hope Paul finally has the ability to actually enjoy moments like these. To have all his fame, fortune, accolades, respect & legacy tucked safely into his trunk of keepsakes, and just genuinely ENJOY these moments in his later years. So sad that he never could manage that in his prime. He had every reason then, too. Tons of respect & gratitude for the many songs, Paul. A fan for decades now, I've yet to be able to choose a favorite. Be well, Sir...
I am older than I once was. And younger than I'll be; that's not unusual. Nor is it strange. After changes upon changes, we are more or less the same. TRUTH!!
I first met and chatted with Simon and Garfunkel backstage after a taping of the “Smothers Brothers” program in 1967, and I attended the Phoenix S and G reunion tour concert (with guests The Everly Bros) about 12 years ago. I never thought I’d still be listening and enjoying this artist for more than 55 years. Everyone posting here has used “national treasure,” so I won’t. Simon’s life would only be better if he’d had a chance to play 2nd base for the Yankees.
I didn't recognize Jerry Douglas right away, but I thought, shit, that sounds just like Jerry Douglas. He looks a lot greyer than the last time I saw him. He is the best!
