Re paper towels. I thrifted a flannelette bed sheet for $3 (king size) and cut it up into paper towel sizes. Haven't used paper towels/sponges in 5 years. Occasionally when I have to use it for something heavy duty I throw it out, I consider it's saved many paper towels and done its job, otherwise they are easy to wash with all the other linen.
I use microfiber cloth. My husband bought a big colorful bag from the auto store. ( You can find them at dollar tree too. I tried dollar tree " bamboo" reusable cloth, not a fan of those, they don't seem to absorb and are to soft for " scrubbing." ) Microfiber isn't super absorbent..but love the texture for wiping/cleaning! Then toss into wash. They have lasted for years so far!
You could used washcloth as paper towel put some velcro onside of washcloth then roll it up like paper towel then put it on your stand for paper towels cheap just put it in the wash ather you used it easy clean up
Done same for year as we got older we soad ok we can afford paper towels now lol we hate them they nit side and don’t smell clean ! So home made napkin are great 👍

Try this pie crust recipe 1 lb. Butter ,3lbs shortening or lard, 5lbs. All purpose flour,1teaspoon salt, 1/4 sugar,and 1 quart of ice cold water. I use my extra large metal mixing bowl. I cut the butter into pea size pieces then add shortening then mix in dry ingredients. Make pie suze balls wrap in plastic wrap then foil. They last longer in the freezer.
I work in a butcher shop, the meat industry has had a rough 2 years, production had to be cut to half... both Canada and USA got hit so hard that we have been told that the cost will double again, though once thing calm and production return normal the price should drop
My mom keeps two small baskets in the bathroom and kitchen. One with clean wash cloths and one for dirty. Each time you wash your hands you use a clean wash cloth and then put in the dirty basket. No paper use and guaranteed clean each time.

Becky, I love your video's! Especially when your out in your garden or canning. It reminds of my Grandparents. Just like you not only was my Grandpa's thumb green but his whole dang arm was green! He had a huge garden and orchard. It was his passion, he was always out there and had it meticulously organized. Pretty sure The Farmers Almanac was his bible...lol! Grandma did the kitchen side of things and spent hours and hours preserving Grandpa's harvest. They have been gone for a while now but, your video's brought back lots of fond old memories! I am a vegetarian so I can't make many of the meals you cook, but I am definitely always inspired by your techniques and your positivity! I don't have enough space in my home to buy in bulk (nowhere to put it!) or to freeze too much at once, but I have definitely taken to thinking more long-term with my groceries since watching your videos. I want to get in the habit of making more servings at once, but I realized last night that I don't actually have a big enough pot to make bulk soups and stews in! I had everything chopped up and I had to reduce the broth amount and pray it would turn out okay. Soup came right up to the top of my pot, but no big spills, thank god. My sister hates leftovers, but I figure if I freeze them, they will be brand new to her next week XD
Yes chicken breast prices here in E Tenn are over $6/lb. Even at the grocery outlet drumsticks are $2.99 and look like the chickens were starved to death!
Yes I’ve been saying my grocery bill has skyrocketed since last summer and everyone just looks at me cross eyed! Usually when strawberries are in season they go to 10/$10 at Kroger and they never dropped off their $2.50 price! 😭 It’s terrible!

That's still an incredibly cheap chicken price. I buy whole free-range, pasture-raised chicken direct from farmers and depending on how much you buy it's $4.05 - $5.00 per pound (in Wisconsin).
If you like tacos your love taco soup. A friend of mine gave me this recipe and it has now become a fan fave in the winter. You make your taco meat like you normally would add a little bit more taco seasoning then you put a can of corn ,can of kidney beans , a can of diced tomatoes with green chiles and a can of tomato soup. When you’re adding all the canned products in you add the liquid also. And it freezes really well. I make a big batch and we get two dinners out of it and then I put 3 to 4 packs in the freezer
I reuse my paper towels until they are 'done'. I also limit myself to only use, at most, 1 roll a month. They usually last me 1 1/2-2 months but I don't care to give them up. I too use mostly cloth, including cloth napkins!
I’ve been reusing my aluminum foil trays for freezer meals. They clean up perfectly after a soak. I just try not to bend them much. I pop them back inside of each other to hold their shape.

I buy whole chickens when they're on sale and break them down myself. There are many videos out there to watch on how to do it. With a sharp knife, a pair of poultry scissors, and some practice, it's easy to do and you'll save a ton of money. And the necks, wing tips etc. make the best stock.
When I saw the big bottle of vodka I thought you were making vanilla! I just started two more batches so it was fresh on my mind. When you said you use it in pie crust…whaaat? Now even more, I’m looking forward to the freezer meal video!
You use vodka to substitute some of the water, vodka doesn't help form gluten like water does, so you can add more liquid and work with the crust a lot easier but still keep it nice and flaky
Becky, if you have never had tableware with gold trim before, be advised that the gold may wash off if you put them in the dishwasher. It will not all come off with the first wash, but the dishwasher will gradually remove it over time.

Great idea....For a freezer meal, made Italian Chicken Catchatory. Chicken thighs, dark meat on the bone is best. Not boneless breads. (Frozen onions&peppers) dehydrated mushrooms and (canned) crushed tomatos, Oregano & basil to taste. Freeze all in a ziploc bag. When you defrost, Cook in a Dutch oven for hours or in a crock pot for 6-8 hrs. We love it.
I too have huge problems with paper towels. Not just the expense or the landfill. Making white paper anything requires a whole lot of chemicals that are not environmentally friendly. I researched and went with 6" square flannel napkins which we've used for several years. They work but 6" is too small. Today I'd go with the Viva small tear size which is about 5"x10". Prior to all this, I bought a huge box of clean t-shirt rags on Amazon which I don't recommend for the kitchen -- go with flannel if you can deal with random-sized pieces.
For freezer meals, to get away from all the foil pans and not have my pyrex tied up, I use a little cooking spray in my pyrex and freeze the meal then pop it out and wrap it up or vacuum seal the solid block. When it's time to cook it I put the frozen block back into pyrex to thaw or cook from frozen. It takes up less space this way too and you don't have to worry about the foil pan getting crushed.
My husband is the same way about paper towels. I always have a floursack towel hanging just for drying dishes and one hanging for drying my hands (but let’s be real, sometimes it gets used for wiping my hands when it’s not meat or the like) so our solution was a magnetic towel bar hanging on the side of the fridge with a clean towel that only he touches so he can trust it. Our paper towel usage went down 75%!
We feed all our chickens, both egg layers and meat chickens only organic feed. This week our feed went up $10 a bag overnight from $28 to $38 dollars a bag.
Try to supplement some with grass while the weather permits ,you can look up chicken tractors ,and pull them around a bit. There is a you tube r Just A Few Acres lots of info.

I was watching some of your old videos including a garden tour. First off.. mad props to you I don't have the patience or physical endurance to start doing plantings like you have. So *claps* ... I have raised chickens though and if you haven't already, you can cycle out some 'chicken dirt' as fertilizer for your garden. And just throw come extra wood chips or rake other vegetation or weeds from next to your brun pile in with the chickens as bedding and extra feed. That will help boost your soil nutrients. My dad told me about his grand parents... They would have a huge garden and chicken coop in each half of a big green house divided down the middle. Every year would switch which side the plants and birds were on and they never had to worry about fertilizing or sheltering and had fresh produce and eggs all year round. (He was born in '44 to give time context)
You don’t have to buy so many Pyrex. Just line your pan with parchment, freeze your casserole, lift it out, freeze in in a zip loc or wrap. Then when time to cook, just pop it back in your casserole and bake.

You need to stuff that zucchini! We let some grow big just to stuff. Make a boat our of it. Dice up your zucchini guts, onion, and tomatoes. Cook you a pound of sausage. We load the boat with sausage, the veggies, prepared stovetop stuffing and then top with a little mozzarella. So yummy. We wolfed it down as kids. We have it a lot in the summer.
I buy measuring cup and spoons at goodwill every time I see them. I have a ton of them, but I like having dedicated cups too. As for the spoons, it seems like mine disappear. I dont know why. But I like having a ton of them so I can always have one for dry ingredients and one for liquid.
A couple years ago, I started hanging my measuring spoons (they are connected together with a ring) on a Command Hook inside my cabinet. It worked so well, I was quite surprised! I did have to train my family, though, LOL!
If we downed a shot every time you said paper towels we’d be very drunk and/or very sick 😂😂😂 but still, I got around the disposable towel use by having designated towels for hands and kitchen work… if it’s green (and has a loop for hanging) it is only for hands - any other colour/style is for kitchen stuff which could involve the floor but those go straight into the washing basket 👍. The greens hang from a hook I put on the inside of the cupboard door that is is under the sink so it can’t be missed or pick up by accident.
Funny thing is when your mentioning the prices I keep on converting to my currency and wow food is extremely expensive in my country. Your blessed to be leaving in a country where the money still has so much weight, if that makes sense🤣🤣🤣
Americans are so spoiled - we complain about food prices but grown most of our food with intensive farming measures and we spend nothing on food. The rest of the world spends 10-20+% of their income on food - I believe in the US that number is 5-6%. With the terrible weather/climate change (droughts, floods, wildfires) we have been experiencing, it isn’t surprising that it costs more to grow our food or feed our livestock.
For organic chicken here in Australia we would be paying at least triple what you do. Conventionally raised would be about double. Your food is so cheap!
One more thing, Becky. I feel the exact same way as you about paper towels and to this day, my husband teases me about an incident involving paper towels before we got married and that was 34 years ago.
I only use paper towels to clean the toilet. In the last three years I have only bought paper towels once. I have dedicated rags for greasy clean up. If my dish towel gets used for anything besides drying hands and dishes it immediately gets thrown in the laundry (and probably thoroughly rinsed first because usually it's used to soak up spilled milk, yay for messy toddlers😒).
We grow our own chickens for meat and the price of chicken feed is DOUBLE what it was last year. That's why the meat cost more this year. Feed prices have skyrocketed. We buy feed in bulk and the price is shocking.
@12..47.....you mentioned washing soda but the box is baking soda. washing soda is sodium carbonate, different from baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). washing soda is one of the ingredients for homemade detergent. so looking forward to your freezer meals for my inspiration. ♥
I like that I don't have to speed up the video when watching you (like I do for most cooking videos). You talk about what you are doing without a lot of "fluff".
I'm glad it's not just my office that patients bring in produce. I work in a geriatric doctor's office and a few months ago a patient brought in about 10-15 pounds of mangoes, so I made mango jam and canned it for the first time ever! Then the next week a different patient brought in 5 pounds of cherries so I made more jam and canned it!
I just increased my food budget too. I kept going over. We so switched to reusable napkins. As a family with two toddlers, we go through a lot. So happy we made the switch. I haven't bought paper towels since the start of the pandemic and only use them for very messy clean-ups.
We replaced napkins with squares made from old white t-shirts. They are nice and soft and great for toddlers! We only cut 2 from a t-shirt because the big ones are easy to hang dry.
@Amanda Dye I have a tip! Over on Erica Lucas's channel, she started using a few designated microfiber towels for grease. I started doing the same thing and wrote Grease in sharpie on the edges, so my family would know the difference. I always wash them in my sink with dish detergent before throwing them in the wash, but I only do the pre-wash because I have a lousy washer. It's hard to always know where to be more sustainable. Either use the paper towels, or use excess water to wash all the reusable and washable things? I live in a state with extreme drought conditions and it's sometimes a toss up. But, I am doing what I can with what I have.
@Amanda Dye For bacon I always save the grease. I mostly cook mine in air fryer. I let the grease drip into the bottom of the basket and then pour into a container for later use. For beef I use a strainer and pour the fat into an old peanut jar and then toss once full.
You can rebatch your soap using a hot process method with a crockpot. If you know the ratio of oils you need to add it will save your soap :) there are also ways to test it to make sure it's not lye heavy. I think there are test strips or something. Love your videos and your beautiful garden! You and I are the same in not wanting to run low on pantry items!
I have replaced my sponge/paper towel habit with Swedish Dishcloths. They are OMG amazing. Feel like paper towels and work like sponges but they are completely washable in the dishwasher or washer and biodegradable. One lasts up to 6 months. The ONLY thing I use paper towels on anymore is cat messes.

Our old freezer died so it’s hard to find a small upright freezer in stores and I don’t want to pay all that shipping fee to have one shipped. As odd as it may sound, I bought a small chest freezer from Amazon early last summer for $100. Free delivery with prime, and delivered to my home, no problem with picking it up. Haven't looked to see what's available this year but it sure was perfect for me. It's my meat freezer.
I am in EU beef stew meat here is 400 gram = 0.88 lbs costs euro 5.75= usd 6.73 is meat for 3 person beef stew , and add potatoes , onions, carrots, little oil/herbs is usd 10 total cost for 1 dinner for 3 persons. A whole chicken here use to be 5 euro but went up to euro 6.75 if you can get it because several times it was empty shelf at grocery shop. Summer fruits harvest was much less, so less in shop box and higher prices. The shelves with cans/jars of fruits is only filled with big size jars/cans which mostly sell at Christmas/Easter all small/medium sizes are gone since long time. Tortillas only 1 brand in small size all others sizes and brands are out of stock. Imported from USA Uncle Ben's rice so far only 3 box this year instead of buy 1 box every 3 weeks. Veggies much smaller in size and less in bag higher prices.
I get the disappointment of the chicken prices, but is seems pretty good that you get local organic chicken for the cost of the Costco chicken. And look at it as you have better quality and supporting a local business.
I use Grove’s recycled trash bags and in general I really like them. However sometimes the quality is inconsistent and I get some bags that rip easier than others ! I would still recommend though!
Grove collaborative is wonderful and I have used them more than a few times since they started the business! I would go back tomorrow if I needed what they have.

Just wanted to add a bit of perspective (I honestly can't get over how cheap things are in the USA). Here, in Australia, to buy 1lb of organic chicken breast at a supermarket will cost you $10.12USD. I'm sure they can be a bit cheaper elsewhere, but most people will buy regular non-organic chicken which, on average, is about $3-4USD a pound. A lot of our prices are going up as well because of how Covid has affected our farmers and our distribution routes. I honestly eat a lot less meat than I used to!
I hang a tea towel by the sink in the kitchen for drying my hands. I’m the same way as your husband, if I don’t know what a towel has been used for I don’t want to use it to dry my hands. The towel I hang up looks different from our kitchen towels, so my husband knows not to use it for anything else. We stopped buying paper towels last year. It was a strange transition but worth it!
So happy to hear I'm not alone in shredding and freezing the abundant amount of zucchini to put in EVERYTHING. Lol my two boy's don't know it but they're chocolate chip waffles they have every morning before school have tons of zucchini, flax seed, and protein powder. Meat prices are going up due to production shortages. My husband works for a food distribution company here in S. Florida and it’s really bad sometimes between prices and warehouse shortages. I have been buying meat by the case when its a good deal and either cutting it down myself and freezing or canning it up to get stocked up a bit. I am definitely going to have to check out my Goodwill for canning jars!
My upright freezer is arriving tomorrow morning! All prices have gone way up in my state which always has the highest grocery prices in the nation. I found the best way to save money on me is to go to my butcher and get a freezer pack. I can get 58 lb of meat which will last me more than a year for $209. And it will go into my new upright freezer! :-) I get my butter at Sam's club and I also really like that butter. My upright freezer should hold a lot more than just my meat so I'm looking at making some freezer meals because I just simply won't cook anymore if my caregiver is in here so she and I can cook a couple of different meals every week and that should see me eating well instead of like last night which was cashews and a pint of Ben & Jerry's!

Our Fred Meyer in Bellingham has been having BOGO sales on Foster Farms Chicken in family packs bringing the price down to $.99lb for bone-in thighs and whole. They typically run out but issue rain checks good for 60 days. That allows me to spread the cost of stocking freezer and canning over two more months’ pay! We’ve been known to go in the last day of the sale just for the rain checks!
I have started using cloth tea towels which I hang to dry. I don’t want dryer sheet residue on my food. I live in Calgary Alberta Canada and we are so dry that they are necessary to prevent static. ❤

Like Becky said, we all have our things. I have celiac disease, so tiny amounts of gluten are a big deal for me. Sometimes, especially at someone else's house, paper towels are the safest option for me. Most people don't have to be careful about gluten in their laundry, so even clean towels might not be safe. If you made a sandwich on your counter and then folded your kitchen linens on it, I can pull a towel out of the drawer, dry my hands on it, make a sandwich with gluten free bread, and then be sick for 3 days. We gotta do what we gotta do.
I'm jealous of that Aidell's sausage...only one store near me sells that brand (others used to, but they stopped carrying them!), and they only have Apple, Italian, and Andoulli flavors (which are all good, too).

At Goodwills near me, jars are 20 cents. So stock up next time you're in Seattle. 49 cents plus purchasing lids you may as well buy new jars for $8.99. (Remember to check the rims for chips when you buy 2nd hand jars)

I like to keep a lot of butter on hand as well, since I have a good stock I can pick it up when my local grocery stores run sales and buy it that way, turns out to be cheaper than buying it in bulk at any of the the bulk stores. (The same with a good many items.) I re-placed 90% of my paper towels with flour sack towels. I cut each one into six towels (72 towels from 12) then I sewed around the edges with a serger to stop them from fraying, could cut them with pinking shears for a no sew method. I roll them up on an old cardboard tube from a plastic wrap box and that goes on my paper towel holder, works great, been doing that for about a year now. I re-placed napkins more than a decade ago 100% I use flannel, I sew two squares together and keep them in a basket or bowl on the counter. Even my grown kids do the same. Have a great weekend!

Try this pie crust recipe 1 lb. Butter ,3lbs shortening or lard, 5lbs. All purpose flour,1teaspoon salt, 1/4 sugar,and 1 quart of ice cold water. I use my extra large metal mixing bowl. I cut the butter into pea size pieces then add shortening then mix in dry ingredients. Make pie suze balls wrap in plastic wrap then foil. They last longer in the freezer.
Organic chicken for $3 a pound is a steal!!! And yes prices are going up because of all the shortages for various reasons.
I work in a butcher shop, the meat industry has had a rough 2 years, production had to be cut to half... both Canada and USA got hit so hard that we have been told that the cost will double again, though once thing calm and production return normal the price should drop
My mom keeps two small baskets in the bathroom and kitchen. One with clean wash cloths and one for dirty. Each time you wash your hands you use a clean wash cloth and then put in the dirty basket. No paper use and guaranteed clean each time.

Becky, I love your video's! Especially when your out in your garden or canning. It reminds of my Grandparents. Just like you not only was my Grandpa's thumb green but his whole dang arm was green! He had a huge garden and orchard. It was his passion, he was always out there and had it meticulously organized. Pretty sure The Farmers Almanac was his bible...lol! Grandma did the kitchen side of things and spent hours and hours preserving Grandpa's harvest. They have been gone for a while now but, your video's brought back lots of fond old memories! I am a vegetarian so I can't make many of the meals you cook, but I am definitely always inspired by your techniques and your positivity! I don't have enough space in my home to buy in bulk (nowhere to put it!) or to freeze too much at once, but I have definitely taken to thinking more long-term with my groceries since watching your videos. I want to get in the habit of making more servings at once, but I realized last night that I don't actually have a big enough pot to make bulk soups and stews in! I had everything chopped up and I had to reduce the broth amount and pray it would turn out okay. Soup came right up to the top of my pot, but no big spills, thank god. My sister hates leftovers, but I figure if I freeze them, they will be brand new to her next week XD
I can relate for my large family of 7 but I'm gonna try some freezer meals next week!!!

That's still an incredibly cheap chicken price. I buy whole free-range, pasture-raised chicken direct from farmers and depending on how much you buy it's $4.05 - $5.00 per pound (in Wisconsin).

If you like tacos your love taco soup. A friend of mine gave me this recipe and it has now become a fan fave in the winter. You make your taco meat like you normally would add a little bit more taco seasoning then you put a can of corn ,can of kidney beans , a can of diced tomatoes with green chiles and a can of tomato soup. When you’re adding all the canned products in you add the liquid also. And it freezes really well. I make a big batch and we get two dinners out of it and then I put 3 to 4 packs in the freezer
I reuse my paper towels until they are 'done'. I also limit myself to only use, at most, 1 roll a month. They usually last me 1 1/2-2 months but I don't care to give them up. I too use mostly cloth, including cloth napkins!
I’ve been reusing my aluminum foil trays for freezer meals. They clean up perfectly after a soak. I just try not to bend them much. I pop them back inside of each other to hold their shape.

I buy whole chickens when they're on sale and break them down myself. There are many videos out there to watch on how to do it. With a sharp knife, a pair of poultry scissors, and some practice, it's easy to do and you'll save a ton of money. And the necks, wing tips etc. make the best stock.

You use vodka to substitute some of the water, vodka doesn't help form gluten like water does, so you can add more liquid and work with the crust a lot easier but still keep it nice and flaky

Becky, if you have never had tableware with gold trim before, be advised that the gold may wash off if you put them in the dishwasher. It will not all come off with the first wash, but the dishwasher will gradually remove it over time.

Great idea....For a freezer meal, made Italian Chicken Catchatory. Chicken thighs, dark meat on the bone is best. Not boneless breads. (Frozen onions&peppers) dehydrated mushrooms and (canned) crushed tomatos, Oregano & basil to taste. Freeze all in a ziploc bag. When you defrost, Cook in a Dutch oven for hours or in a crock pot for 6-8 hrs. We love it.
I too have huge problems with paper towels. Not just the expense or the landfill. Making white paper anything requires a whole lot of chemicals that are not environmentally friendly. I researched and went with 6" square flannel napkins which we've used for several years. They work but 6" is too small. Today I'd go with the Viva small tear size which is about 5"x10". Prior to all this, I bought a huge box of clean t-shirt rags on Amazon which I don't recommend for the kitchen -- go with flannel if you can deal with random-sized pieces.
For freezer meals, to get away from all the foil pans and not have my pyrex tied up, I use a little cooking spray in my pyrex and freeze the meal then pop it out and wrap it up or vacuum seal the solid block. When it's time to cook it I put the frozen block back into pyrex to thaw or cook from frozen. It takes up less space this way too and you don't have to worry about the foil pan getting crushed.

My husband is the same way about paper towels. I always have a floursack towel hanging just for drying dishes and one hanging for drying my hands (but let’s be real, sometimes it gets used for wiping my hands when it’s not meat or the like) so our solution was a magnetic towel bar hanging on the side of the fridge with a clean towel that only he touches so he can trust it. Our paper towel usage went down 75%!
We feed all our chickens, both egg layers and meat chickens only organic feed. This week our feed went up $10 a bag overnight from $28 to $38 dollars a bag.
Try to supplement some with grass while the weather permits ,you can look up chicken tractors ,and pull them around a bit. There is a you tube r Just A Few Acres lots of info.

I was watching some of your old videos including a garden tour. First off.. mad props to you I don't have the patience or physical endurance to start doing plantings like you have. So *claps* ... I have raised chickens though and if you haven't already, you can cycle out some 'chicken dirt' as fertilizer for your garden. And just throw come extra wood chips or rake other vegetation or weeds from next to your brun pile in with the chickens as bedding and extra feed. That will help boost your soil nutrients. My dad told me about his grand parents... They would have a huge garden and chicken coop in each half of a big green house divided down the middle. Every year would switch which side the plants and birds were on and they never had to worry about fertilizing or sheltering and had fresh produce and eggs all year round. (He was born in '44 to give time context)
You don’t have to buy so many Pyrex. Just line your pan with parchment, freeze your casserole, lift it out, freeze in in a zip loc or wrap. Then when time to cook, just pop it back in your casserole and bake.
Wouldn’t it take more time to wait for it to freeze versus buying several glass pans? I think she makes 25-30 freezer meals at a time.

You need to stuff that zucchini! We let some grow big just to stuff. Make a boat our of it. Dice up your zucchini guts, onion, and tomatoes. Cook you a pound of sausage. We load the boat with sausage, the veggies, prepared stovetop stuffing and then top with a little mozzarella. So yummy. We wolfed it down as kids. We have it a lot in the summer.

I buy measuring cup and spoons at goodwill every time I see them. I have a ton of them, but I like having dedicated cups too. As for the spoons, it seems like mine disappear. I dont know why. But I like having a ton of them so I can always have one for dry ingredients and one for liquid.

A couple years ago, I started hanging my measuring spoons (they are connected together with a ring) on a Command Hook inside my cabinet. It worked so well, I was quite surprised! I did have to train my family, though, LOL!
If we downed a shot every time you said paper towels we’d be very drunk and/or very sick 😂😂😂 but still, I got around the disposable towel use by having designated towels for hands and kitchen work… if it’s green (and has a loop for hanging) it is only for hands - any other colour/style is for kitchen stuff which could involve the floor but those go straight into the washing basket 👍. The greens hang from a hook I put on the inside of the cupboard door that is is under the sink so it can’t be missed or pick up by accident.

Americans are so spoiled - we complain about food prices but grown most of our food with intensive farming measures and we spend nothing on food. The rest of the world spends 10-20+% of their income on food - I believe in the US that number is 5-6%. With the terrible weather/climate change (droughts, floods, wildfires) we have been experiencing, it isn’t surprising that it costs more to grow our food or feed our livestock.
Meat prices are ridiculous, chicken breast here in New Zealand works out to about $4.02 US per pound. And that's just the cheapest supermarket stuff

Chicken breast in Canada (Toronto) starts at $7 US per pound (at No Frills).
For organic chicken here in Australia we would be paying at least triple what you do. Conventionally raised would be about double. Your food is so cheap!
One more thing, Becky. I feel the exact same way as you about paper towels and to this day, my husband teases me about an incident involving paper towels before we got married and that was 34 years ago.

E cloths are a great alternative to paper towels. We’ve slowly built up a stash over the years. They often clean better than paper towels.
I only use paper towels to clean the toilet. In the last three years I have only bought paper towels once. I have dedicated rags for greasy clean up. If my dish towel gets used for anything besides drying hands and dishes it immediately gets thrown in the laundry (and probably thoroughly rinsed first because usually it's used to soak up spilled milk, yay for messy toddlers😒).

We grow our own chickens for meat and the price of chicken feed is DOUBLE what it was last year. That's why the meat cost more this year. Feed prices have skyrocketed. We buy feed in bulk and the price is shocking.
We have animals too and save our receipts in a binder every year feed has gone up 2-3 dollars per bag , that's alot when you are buying alot of feed
@12..47.....you mentioned washing soda but the box is baking soda. washing soda is sodium carbonate, different from baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). washing soda is one of the ingredients for homemade detergent. so looking forward to your freezer meals for my inspiration. ♥

I'm glad it's not just my office that patients bring in produce. I work in a geriatric doctor's office and a few months ago a patient brought in about 10-15 pounds of mangoes, so I made mango jam and canned it for the first time ever! Then the next week a different patient brought in 5 pounds of cherries so I made more jam and canned it!

I just increased my food budget too. I kept going over. We so switched to reusable napkins. As a family with two toddlers, we go through a lot. So happy we made the switch. I haven't bought paper towels since the start of the pandemic and only use them for very messy clean-ups.
We replaced napkins with squares made from old white t-shirts. They are nice and soft and great for toddlers! We only cut 2 from a t-shirt because the big ones are easy to hang dry.
@Amanda Dye I have a tip! Over on Erica Lucas's channel, she started using a few designated microfiber towels for grease. I started doing the same thing and wrote Grease in sharpie on the edges, so my family would know the difference. I always wash them in my sink with dish detergent before throwing them in the wash, but I only do the pre-wash because I have a lousy washer. It's hard to always know where to be more sustainable. Either use the paper towels, or use excess water to wash all the reusable and washable things? I live in a state with extreme drought conditions and it's sometimes a toss up. But, I am doing what I can with what I have.
@Amanda Dye For bacon I always save the grease. I mostly cook mine in air fryer. I let the grease drip into the bottom of the basket and then pour into a container for later use. For beef I use a strainer and pour the fat into an old peanut jar and then toss once full.
You can rebatch your soap using a hot process method with a crockpot. If you know the ratio of oils you need to add it will save your soap :) there are also ways to test it to make sure it's not lye heavy. I think there are test strips or something. Love your videos and your beautiful garden! You and I are the same in not wanting to run low on pantry items!
I have replaced my sponge/paper towel habit with Swedish Dishcloths. They are OMG amazing. Feel like paper towels and work like sponges but they are completely washable in the dishwasher or washer and biodegradable. One lasts up to 6 months.
The ONLY thing I use paper towels on anymore is cat messes.

Our old freezer died so it’s hard to find a small upright freezer in stores and I don’t want to pay all that shipping fee to have one shipped. As odd as it may sound, I bought a small chest freezer from Amazon early last summer for $100. Free delivery with prime, and delivered to my home, no problem with picking it up. Haven't looked to see what's available this year but it sure was perfect for me. It's my meat freezer.
I am in EU beef stew meat here is 400 gram = 0.88 lbs costs euro 5.75= usd 6.73
is meat for 3 person beef stew , and add potatoes , onions, carrots, little oil/herbs is usd 10 total cost for 1 dinner for 3 persons.
A whole chicken here use to be 5 euro but went up to euro 6.75 if you can get it because several times it was empty shelf at grocery shop.
Summer fruits harvest was much less, so less in shop box and higher prices.
The shelves with cans/jars of fruits is only filled with big size jars/cans which mostly sell at Christmas/Easter all small/medium sizes are gone since long time. Tortillas only 1 brand in small size all others sizes and brands are out of stock.
Imported from USA Uncle Ben's rice so far only 3 box this year instead of buy 1 box every 3 weeks. Veggies much smaller in size and less in bag higher prices.

I get the disappointment of the chicken prices, but is seems pretty good that you get local organic chicken for the cost of the Costco chicken. And look at it as you have better quality and supporting a local business.
I use Grove’s recycled trash bags and in general I really like them. However sometimes the quality is inconsistent and I get some bags that rip easier than others ! I would still recommend though!
I find that with biodegradable bin bags, they can deteriorate over time...so the longer they're stored the easier they rip.

Just wanted to add a bit of perspective (I honestly can't get over how cheap things are in the USA). Here, in Australia, to buy 1lb of organic chicken breast at a supermarket will cost you $10.12USD. I'm sure they can be a bit cheaper elsewhere, but most people will buy regular non-organic chicken which, on average, is about $3-4USD a pound. A lot of our prices are going up as well because of how Covid has affected our farmers and our distribution routes.

Ground pork is good when getting a whole hog we used to do half sausage and half ground pork. We just added some seasoning for what we were making
I hang a tea towel by the sink in the kitchen for drying my hands. I’m the same way as your husband, if I don’t know what a towel has been used for I don’t want to use it to dry my hands. The towel I hang up looks different from our kitchen towels, so my husband knows not to use it for anything else. We stopped buying paper towels last year. It was a strange transition but worth it!

Meat prices are going up due to production shortages. My husband works for a food distribution company here in S. Florida and it’s really bad sometimes between prices and warehouse shortages. I have been buying meat by the case when its a good deal and either cutting it down myself and freezing or canning it up to get stocked up a bit. I am definitely going to have to check out my Goodwill for canning jars!
My upright freezer is arriving tomorrow morning! All prices have gone way up in my state which always has the highest grocery prices in the nation. I found the best way to save money on me is to go to my butcher and get a freezer pack. I can get 58 lb of meat which will last me more than a year for $209. And it will go into my new upright freezer! :-) I get my butter at Sam's club and I also really like that butter. My upright freezer should hold a lot more than just my meat so I'm looking at making some freezer meals because I just simply won't cook anymore if my caregiver is in here so she and I can cook a couple of different meals every week and that should see me eating well instead of like last night which was cashews and a pint of Ben & Jerry's!

Our Fred Meyer in Bellingham has been having BOGO sales on Foster Farms Chicken in family packs bringing the price down to $.99lb for bone-in thighs and whole. They typically run out but issue rain checks good for 60 days. That allows me to spread the cost of stocking freezer and canning over two more months’ pay! I have started using cloth tea towels which I hang to dry. I don’t want dryer sheet residue on my food. I live in Calgary Alberta Canada and we are so dry that they are necessary to prevent static. ❤

I must confess I'm like hubby with the paper towels I prefer them for hand drying.
Like Becky said, we all have our things. I have celiac disease, so tiny amounts of gluten are a big deal for me. Sometimes, especially at someone else's house, paper towels are the safest option for me. Most people don't have to be careful about gluten in their laundry, so even clean towels might not be safe. If you made a sandwich on your counter and then folded your kitchen linens on it, I can pull a towel out of the drawer, dry my hands on it, make a sandwich with gluten free bread, and then be sick for 3 days. We gotta do what we gotta do.
I'm jealous of that Aidell's sausage...only one store near me sells that brand (others used to, but they stopped carrying them!), and they only have Apple, Italian, and Andoulli flavors (which are all good, too).
Your hands are clean, I hang my paper towels on the front of my sink to dry and use it to dry up around the sink later!
I rinse mine and hang them over the faucet to dry, then they get used until they're falling to pieces. I hate single use items.
Get the seeds out of that zucchini and that big zucchini is known as a marrow. It is usually served hollowed out of the seeds and stuffed. Delicious!
September 2021..I bet you believe the food prices now! Yikes...everything is sky high. Buying a hog is a great way to save money, I think. Haven't done it in awhile. I used to buy half a cow, but haven't done that in a bit either. I need to find a co-op

Started using our paper grocery bags as our trash bags. Cuts out the plastic all together.
At Goodwills near me, jars are 20 cents. So stock up next time you're in Seattle. 49 cents plus purchasing lids you may as well buy new jars for $8.99. (Remember to check the rims for chips when you buy 2nd hand jars)

I like to keep a lot of butter on hand as well, since I have a good stock I can pick it up when my local grocery stores run sales and buy it that way, turns out to be cheaper than buying it in bulk at any of the the bulk stores. (The same with a good many items.) I re-placed 90% of my paper towels with flour sack towels. I cut each one into six towels (72 towels from 12) then I sewed around the edges with a serger to stop them from fraying, could cut them with pinking shears for a no sew method. I roll them up on an old cardboard tube from a plastic wrap box and that goes on my paper towel holder, works great, been doing that for about a year now. I re-placed napkins more than a decade ago 100% I use flannel, I sew two squares together and keep them in a basket or bowl on the counter. Even my grown kids do the same. Have a great weekend!
