- Tribute to the late Leonard Cohen, who wrote the lyrics to this beautiful song back in 1984. Very interesting story about how the melody and lyrics through different artists interpretations continued to evolve the song. Jeff Buckleys version is the one that brought it to popularity and its current form. However their are many versions and many different lyrics to the song. Most written by Cohen. Amazing how so many contributed to its development. My singing partner Brian and I were in my basement finishing up a practice last night around midnight. The mics and amps were still on and I just started singing this. He picked up the upright bass and starting playing. This is the first time through the song. Brian improvised the harmonies. Heres what came out.
no words needed. i love your tribute. one of the greatest is gone. rip
Thanks Lydi....and yes he was a wonderful talent.
Beautiful Mike & Brian - truly a haunting and tender performance. Fits the mood today - that bass really brings a solemn tone - really lovely!
Thanks Joanie....It was a moment...wanted to share it with my YT buddies.

so gorgeous... your voice so full of soul and heart and vulnerability, perfectly supported by that bass.. wow...
Thanks Michael...... this song is so powerful I dont think it needs much of a musical score. A tribute to the genius of Leonard Cohen.
Beautiful Mike! Loved your version! Of famous people kd langs version has always been my favorite! From even before she sang it at the Olympics! Have a Merry Christmas Mike!

Really, really nice tribute.
Thanks Steve!
Ya'll are very kind. It's a good concept. Mike does great. My harmonies are sketchy at times but it was a first take.
I *never* would've had the guts to post it so kudos to Mike.
I like the sparse arrangement and the restraint. This song gets "yelled" too often.
Its a little raw on both ends....part of its charm. But I felt it had heart. Thats why its here.
