Great video! I don't know why you think Spiders is a new developer though. Greedfall was their 9th game and they were founded in 2008 making them older than quite a few game studios. Also I find it funny that you think the writing was the worst part of Kingdoms of Amalor considering they actually got a professional novelist to write the story :P

True. But seems like GodFall was the title that really pushed them from unknown indie dev to lesser unknown indie dev. Ha.
I like that they’ve kept going all these years and seem to be getting better each time.

Played Haven a bit when it launched last in GP. Didn’t get far. Just wound up doing some of the first fights, and while I normally turn and run when it comes to turn-based games, it seemed to implement unique turn based combat that feeds off each other characters turns, as if they’re fighting together as one, which is cool when think of them as a couple working together. I wish I’d given it more time. Seems like could b solid.

  • @Dapperhippie
    @Dapperhippie 11 месяцев назад +1

I feel like Greedfall's story was not done justice here. It is wildly complex. You play essentially a noble (NOT A PIRATE) sent to help your cousin as they govern this new land across the sea. It's as much about exploration and discovery as it is about the effects of colonization. There are several DIFFERENT native groups to interact with along with the other politic powerhouses trying to settle here. ALL while there is some mysterious plague killing people, that hopefully you can find a cure for.
There's complex characters and companions. There's an actual in game clock that matters. If someone says to meet them here tomorrow at noon, be there!
The combat sometimes can leave you wanting a little bit. Once you figure it out, it's actually pretty basic. The skill tree is pretty small and doesn't allow for too much customization. But the writing and stories in this game make it so worth it!

    • @Dapperhippie
      @Dapperhippie 11 месяцев назад

@tgreen9804 I would try! The opening, other than the beginning boss fight, feels sluggish I do remember that.
But it gets better once you've explored and gotten a good bit of the map done. If you really immerse yourself in the games politics/history, the story gets really interesting.

re: Greedfall> Ok so I haven't finished it, but I did make it some way through its second chapter. And its not about pirates so far as I've seen. The protagonists are the scions of a wealthy renaissance-era-like family who control (one or more of: land on a new continent, or a company that is involved in shipping to/from this new continent, or somesuch like that); it has much more in common with the european (mostly spanish/portugese at least as far as I could tell) "colonization" (conquering) of south america, but in a world involving some degree of magic and mythology. Pretty sure the PCs had nothing to do with being pirates.

I bought The Sinking City thinking that it would be something similar to Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth. While The Sinking City does have RPG and open world elements, it does take away from what it’s supposed to be: a horror game. The name HP Lovecraft is associated with Horror and this games really doesn’t do it justice. In the end I see it kinda like The Evil Within 2 as it gives you an open world to explore which takes away from the tension you’re supposed to feel when playing a horror title. If you like RPG/ open world game you might enjoy it. But if you know anything about HP Lovecraft and Call of Cthulhu (the HP Lovecraft story and not just the games) then you might let be in for a bad time

Kingdoms of Amalur has some of the best combat OF ALL TIME. Where it failed is having way too many generic lifeless quests and NPC's. If you stick to the main quests and all of the faction / race quests and the occasional side quest you find particular interesting, it's a great game. If you don't do this, you will be severely over leveled. Potions are exploitable too. The most fun run I had was self handicapping - no health potions. Only heal spell and a lifeline of 2 health potions max.
That being said. Criminally underrated and I wish they would take the exact same combat and world and do a better job balancing XP and not make the side quests so shitty.

I bought the original KOA but unfortunately it was right around then that my xbox 360 would suddenly no longer read discs. So, never got the chance to play it but as a fan of the elder scrolls, others had told me to try it. Unfortunately though I was either a poor college student and couldn't get a new xbox at the time or I might have moved on my own afterwards and was a working stiff with little time and tight finances. Either way.
I did indeed purchase the re-release. Unfortunately due to a number of factors mostly having to do with my job working me 6 days a week at often 12 hours+ largely having to do with the pandemic, though we were super slammed even before that honestly, just not had the time or energy to start a new game and so had been chugging along with either Fallout 4 or skyrim.
However, work has been dialing way back finally and I have been chipping away little by little at my backlog of games and movies. There has just been so much since I haven't had time. So hopefully I will get to KOA finally and enjoy it. Recently tried the newer DOOM games. Just couldn't quite get into them. In time maybe. Either way.

Given Star Renegades, I'm kind of surprised not to see Star Traders get any love. There are a lot of XCOM-ish or 4x-ish elements, but it's definitely an RPG at the core - negotiations, quests, your whole objective and philosophy are driven by how you are playing your main character. Even the combat plays out completely differently for a merchant vs. a bounty hunter.

You know it would be good if you had the room for it. But you're so full from the main meal that you don't. Really felt like the first half of that game should have been the full first game and the second half should have been the first sequel. But considering that game's origin story it probably had to overdo in order to justify its budget.

I wouldn’t say it’s hidden. It had a pretty big release, reviewed well and sold well across all platforms. Sea of stars has released now and is also very good, though draws its influence from Chrono Trigger.

I heard myriad good things about chained echos but tried it and found the combat so boring and drawn out for even the small battles that I had spent 4 hours in the game and probably 3 1/2 in combat....mostly waiting for the giant health bars to slowly get cut down.
Felt tedious and not very fun after the first few fights. Can't skip and not grind either, bc most of the time you'll hit a mad wall of difficulty without.
If it has a good story it was buried under tedium and a boring world to explore for me.
      I wanted to love it.
      Couldn't stand playing it.
      A big bummer for me

@@ItzSkettimas A few things I noticed about combat is yes, the battles are longer, but there are no random encounters, battles can be fled at any point, and each battle is unique. Since you fully heal after each battle and only level up after defeating bosses, regular encounters are only good for getting crafting items and building up ability points-neither of which are really all that necessary though they can be helpful. And since each battle is unique (different formations, enemy types, enemy quantity), you have to adjust your tactics to match.
As for the story, well, that does take a long time to get going, mostly because there’s a lot of political factions and history to get caught up on. Once I got a handle of everything (probably around the 10 hour mark), I started to really enjoy the plot.
It’s a bummer the game didn’t click with you, but god knows there are tons of ultra-popular games out there that I simply did not like, so I get it.

@@erakfishfishfish @erakfishfishfish I know how they work. And no. Most battles are the same tactics. Rinse and repeat. I already addressed the issue with avoiding battles: you get locked out of progress until you're strong enough.
      This is bad design imo.
The battles also last upwards 10-15 minutes a piece often. On tiny enemies.
Also fighting a mosquito by hitting it with magic, stacked ultimates, and blades, bombs, etc. Just to have it take 30 hits is awful design.
      It's boring.
      It's tedious.
No battle in the game after 4+ hours was any fun for me. They dragged on for absolutely zero good reason.
Having the after battle auto heal just gave them an excuse to make every battle an obnoxious chore list of mechanics. Booooooorrrrrrrriiiiiinnnnnnnggggg.
The story also went absolutely nowhere and the characters had flat and mid AF dialogue.
Not one part of this game lives up to the names people compare it to.
It's a slog that takes double digit hours to even start to get fun.
      That's absolutely dogshit game design.
(Looking at you too starfield, although it opens up so much that it's worth it, unlike this game that's the same)
Also calling each fight unique is the silliest thing I've heard in my life.
      No they aren't.
Same enemies per area. Over and over.
The fact that adding one more mosquito or tiny little enemy means I have to adjust an entire 10 minute strategy is the polar opposite of fun or addictive.
I honestly look so far down on its fans.
Y'all's opinions no longer have any merit.
      It's a 3/10 for me.

Sea of stars does it all correct and is a blast. Chained echoes is a jank tier forgettable RPG that can easily be passed up for better games. Just my opinion. People enjoy it and good for them.
I'll get back to the games I like instead. Sad to see such a turd (imo) get such high praise tho

Does KoAmalur hold up today? The first one? Remaster?
With so many good games out it’s hard to go back in years. I mean I do if all the time but games tend to age with time, certain ones at least, and not sure how this one holds up.
I have the original. ( I think it’s hard copy even). Does that one hood still? Do I need rerelease?

I haven't played KoA yet. I have been wanting an experience like that for a while. As a big Dark Souls and Morrowind fan, I thought it would scratch that itch for me. However any time I come across conversations around the game, I find it compared to Dragon's Dogma (which I also haven't played yet). Does Dragon's Dogma not make the list because it wasn't as "hidden" or do you just think KoA is significantly better. I am hoping to make an educated decision between the two, before I invest the inevitable 200 hours (and maybe like $5 on Switch ;))

i wish my potatoe laptop could handle Kingdom come Deliverance. When i search forums with lists of games that would match my preferences, every forum keeps suggesting this game and to be honest it does look good (though i avoid watching videos so game and gameplay won't be spoiled to me). The problem is that i don't want to buy a new pc if my only reason for this are games.

Where are the hidden gems?^^ Come on, all the games mentioned, except Star Renegades, are A-AA games that sold and had media cover pretty decently.
The video itself ain't bad, don't get me wrong, but when the title says hidden gems I am awaiting indie titles.
