- Karibuni - Welcome to the SJA World Kiswahili Day London by MTM
The Swahili people, recognised for their vibrant culture and historical importance, call the East African coast home, spanning from southern Somalia, the coasts of Kenya and Tanzania, to northern Mozambique.
Their presence is felt as far as Comoros and the northern tip of Madagascar.
A mosaic of races, the Swahili people embody genetic influences from the Bantu, Arabs, Indians, Persians, and Portuguese.
Swahili, spoken by over 250 million individuals, stands as the most widely spoken African language.
Also known as Kiswahili, it acts as the cohesive force uniting the diverse Swahili communities.
Serving as a lingua franca across the region, Kiswahili facilitates communication among people of various ethnic backgrounds. Rooted in Bantu origins, the language has absorbed words and expressions from Arabic, Persian, Portuguese, and English, showcasing the history of trade and cultural exchange.
Despite their relatively small numbers, the Swahili people's impact through the widespread use of the Swahili language is immense.
Thank You For Joining Us in Bringing Kiswahili to the Heart of London on World Kiswahili Day July 2024!
