First of all, I really like your demos. I can never achieve the same sound quality as you do. It's so in the pocket. Also, I love your playing style. Your demos are almost tailor made for my enjoyment. When you were noodling in E, I thought I was hearing my own playing! Anyway, another great video and you brought out the best in this guitar.
I've had my E1D for about 3 years. Beautiful sound: rich, woody, lovely to play. Handles different tunings no problem. The 1 & 3/4 nut width and generous string spacing makes fingerstyle a pleasure and a key reason why I bought it. The neck profile is comfortable for thumb over barre chords, not too chunky and I have medium size hands. It's a very versatile guitar as I'm an all rounder couch player. Nice deep bass great for strumming, well balanced across mids and trebles, the notes ring out for fingerpicking with clarity all the way up the fretboard. Can be loud or delicate when it needs to be. And the specs are high end for the price you pay: all solid woods, bone nut and saddle, ebony bridge pins. A great deal and a real quality guitar.
Thanks for all of these high quality reviews, Mate! I live in the middle of the Australian outback so I can't just go try guitars out at the shops. I have to order them in. These video tests are the best out there. I'm probably looking at an E6 or E8 but I would love to hear an E3DE if you every get your hands on one. There aren't any good videos of that guitar. Cheers from the Red Centre!
Does anyone know how this differs in sound compared to the new model E1D Special with thermo cured top, gloss finished, herringbone rosette and small dot fret markers?
The E1 series costs 200 notes more and sounds like a 1000 notes better. The difference is huge. Not that there's anything wrong with the PCH. Just that the E1 really is that good. I tried them side by side and put down the PCh after a minute because it was so obviously worth paying the extra 200. Meanwhile the difference between the 5oo notes E1 range and the more expensive 1200 priced guitars is small IMO.
I just got the E1 OM in classic finish. At what point does the neck become a song piece of wood does it ever? Also your comparisons are great and helped me choose mine but I feel a lot of the times Eastmans are compared to the Martin and Taylor counterparts but not in the same price point. When would you say a eastman sounds and feels better than a same priced USA made guitar? Does it ever?
I don't think there is any hard/fast rule. Sometimes you get a really exceptional guitar from any company, in any price point. That's the nature of wood!
Well they do sound better than any comparably priced US made guitars in my opinion. They just lack that special tone of the much higher priced Martin and Gibsons models they are copying.
@@turrafirmaguitarchannel Most people make the mistake of listening subjectively through the filter of a price tag. Tone is subjective, but I'll say this, I've a/b'd Eastman's with Martins and the Eastman won every single time. To each their own.
Hi Ian , what kinda pick(s) do use? Most of the time in reviews like these the reviewer never gives any info about the pick they play with; heavy/ light strumming/flatpicking etc. Yep, i know it is a personal thing, but for a lot of people it could be an eyeopener for better playing and sound.
@@teo2596 had a set brass pins I had bought some time ago . Put them on it and sure enough you are right. They warmed it up with better clarity too . Can believe it! The strings I have on it are d addario xs -13-56 . Had just put them on earlier today. Sounds like the sound I want now . Will put the 80 /20’ as soon has get them. Wouldn’t ever believe this would have taken that bright edge off. Thanks a lot / Jeff Clark out of Rockdale Texas .
$579 with free shipping from lots of places Nov 2023. For an all solid high quality built guitar not a bad price. Wonder how it competes with the all solid but mahogany Recording King RD-318. Both are basically Martin D-18 clones. The RD-318 has the sharp V neck profile that takes getting used to.
They've jumped in price through the pandemic, I guess. They go for €679 here, new. I just got one 2nd hand for €450. God knows what I'll be getting, but I have the OM version, and it is impressive.
@@nige99 I just picked up a used one' 5/12 pounds at a side walk sale' no strings or bridge pins and the nut was missing' easy fixed' nice sound and light in the hands.
The ebony fretboard always sounds boxie to me. Rosewood or walnut or even laurel would just sound better. I'm thinking tusq or brass bridge pins to compensate for the boxie sound. Wen I buy one I'm getting a set of each kind n doing my own test comparison. If this guitar had walnut fretboard it would most certainly be my dream guitar n the only guitar I would own.

Best bang for the buck in the industry right now.

Just bought one. Couldn't believe my luck when I found it. Sounds 1000$ better than it costs. The volume on it is huge and the notes are so crispy.
A very enjoyable and useful demo. I wish all were like this one.
Great sounding guitar and great playing Ian! Love your videos!

It would be interesting to see a comparison between this and the Eastman PCH series.
The E1D is much better than the PCH ones. Tried them both.
Great bang for the buck! And its all solid... crazy for that price

@ian meadows -- Did you prefer the E2D Cedar over the E1D?
What strings on this E1D demo? 12’s?
in my opinion next to the Martin D18, the best sounding dread. Eastman knows how it's done.
Poor man's D18😊

Superb recording.
Its the guitar an the player, not the recording.

Happy to buy this from you 😆
I believe I have found my new guitar!
is there any diff between the two colours of the e1d? I tried both and they sounded different to my ear but the site says they're both spruce
Yes. The ones with the classic Finish get the less desirable tops as they can hide imperfections easier.
Eastman E1d or Martin D10e?
Would appreciate your thoughts On this too plz ?
To my ears this is value at its peak..
me too Frederik!

I have a bunch I like - but in general I like really thick/heavy picks - usually 1.5mm. The Dunlop primetone would be a good place to start

Yes I do, the shop is Acoustic Music in Guilford CT

Nope they all come with ebony bridge pins now even on the om model. No plastic anything on these.
My e1d come whit ebony pins.. but for me, for more balance sound (stock little bit boxie), bone, tusq or brass bridge pins are better
On their website they say "white plastic with black dots"
I would trade my Martin DRS-2 for one.
Bob Aldo do it then 👍🏼
D18 wannabe. However for the price point it sounds not so bad at all
exactly! for 20% of the cost.
The d18 is by far and away my favorite Martin sound. Although it's no d18, this thing really sounds incredible in every demo that I've heard.
