Excellent breakdown of what Soul Singing is. It is great that Motherless Child is the example. As a black man I had never thought of why the singing in black churches is so moving and powerful. It is because the tradition developed from a people who had been through and were still suffering greatly. Hence your singing tradition develops as a way to show that emotion in your singing. Again, Motherless Child is the epitome of explaining that tradition and history. Excellent job Tara and Jeremie

This lesson was special in a number of ways. One is I understand it. The song "El Paso" by Marty Robbins has in its lyrics "everything is gone in life- nothing is left". I lived in Texas and that is what happened to me. Another song is "The Prayer"- now has more meaning because my mother passed away on January 2nd, and I pray that she found her way-to a place where she is saved. And the song your coach sang- now I feel like a motherless child- so it all hit home. Thank you-

Great video! I actually always sing with soul but watching this video I think I need to do an excercise to improve even more by choosing songs that are out of my comfort zone or that I would not thinking singing by asking friends etc. So that I can enter in stories like an actor but with my voice!

Tara and guest, this video was 9:52. I believe your conversation was very helpful to artists who are struggling with their ability to reach "way down" for that soulful sound.
Tara, I know you are but I don't know about your guest (I'm so sorry if you mentioned his name but it went by me. I apologize)if he knows who Angelina Jordan is. As you know, Tara, she defies logic and can reach down into her soul and not only feel the emotion of situations she has never experienced in her life but has the uncanny ability to bring forth that soulfulness straight to the listener and literally draw tears from most of them. And, she does so in such an extraordinary way. She sings effortlessly (or so it appears). Her confidence in singing the song makes the listener believe she truly feels the emotion of the song and even though they question, "How can she do that?", they are in absolute awe.
Tara, I know you are backed up with an enormous amount of work but please try to squeeze in Angelina singing Adele's cover of, "All I Ask". It's a great example of soulful singing to the umpth degree. Adele sings the song beautifully, of course. Then, listen to Angelina's version. I don't know, perhaps it's not fair to use her as an example because she seems to be beyond anything that any of us have ever heard before. (She's now 15.)
