It's always such a pleasure to witness a first impression of someone who's able to express them in words, what an amazing gift, thank you very much! As instantly in love with 'Such a Shame' when I heard it for the first time in the early 80s, I've put the needle right on the second track of this LP many times over and over.
Only the last years, able to see the video's of the live performances on RUclips, especially 'Montreux', I also enjoyed the other songs a lot. But the following records made me want to cry and laugh at the same time: they really touch ones soul. Don't forget to also listen to the final one: 'Mark Hollis': it's beautiful.

As you point out, the songwriting is quite direct. However, unlike the previous album, the arrangements of the songs are refined and embellished with rich textures. Interesting that the cold keyboard sounds are accompanied by warm bass sounds and real drums. Such a Shame is a synth pop masterpiece. Songs like Tomorrow Started or Renée are enriched with the unique voice of Mark Hollis. One more step in the growth of their talent as composers before the release of one of the best albums of the 80s, The Colour of Spring.

Thanks for the reaction, really enjoyed it, even if I might not always agree 😊
This album has higher peaks than The Party's Over (Such a Shame, It's My Life, maybe also Renee), but I actually find The Party's Over more interesting as an album. I do agree there is quite a bit simplicity in a number of songs, which doesn't have to be bad for a pop song though.
Call in the Night Boy is interesting, I love the pre-chorus, but I find the main chorus really weak
Looking forward to hear what you think about Colour of the Spring!

I think the whole album is a masterpiece. By the way, I like their first album too.

This was my second talk talk..I had to wait for it. Not disappointed. Agree with your takes. Liked it's my life til it hit the rotations and got beat to death.srill love such a shame and tomorrow's started..If you come across the 12 inch single of My Foolish Freind a nice bridge between partys over and this one, and released kinda midpoint, there a great piano/base version of Call in the Night Boys.slow and raw. I prefer it...surprised? by the album version.

Perhaps the word to sum up this record is formulaic?
I do enjoy it though. There is progression in sound from the first album. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the next one as at times it really hints at where they were going with albums 4 and 5.
I always hear "Colin the night boy" though when singing this in my head, and wonder who he was. 🤭
So interesting seeing people like yourself reacting to these great 80's records and bands. A modern take, outlook and fresh perspective by younger heads is always welcome and enjoyable to those who grew up with these gems at the time. We can never hear these again for the first time. Its a fascinating watch. Thank you.

Jason Lytle from Grandaddy made an amazing rendition of Tomorrow Started if you ever get around to it. Also Grandaddy has put out some new (and some old) songs this year.
