I met Scarfo and Leonetti as a 17 year old in 1985 when I was a valet attendant at the old Hyatt Hotel in Cherry Hill. There was a Local 54 office across the street and union chiefs would often have lunch at the Italian / Chinese restaurant at the hotel. This one summer day , Leonetti and Scarfo pulled up in a Gray Lincoln and asked if they could self park and take the keys. At the time i knew who they were bc they were always in the news. Scarfo never made eye contact with me. I remember thinking I could see that he was deep in thought. I had no fear - no reason to - and kind of got a thrill out of it. Leonetti gave me $20 for $3.00 parking. That was a huge tip then. I think minimum wage was $5.

I feel like they burned the subject, or they seem to feel that way most “solid” directors, artsy types and them. They just didn’t like the ending. But your right about the script It would make a great film. You will need a good actor to play the little lunatic. Pesci or Pacino in there younger days would have been near the mark. But today I don’t know who.

I knew Phil. He lied about a lot in that book. Yeah the events were there, but the real reason was because of Nicky AND Phil in many of those cases. In the end Nicky refused to talk and Phil got to blame it all on his uncle and walk away. Remember, history is written by the victors. Nick lost and Phil won, by default. As Nicky said in his letter home, "my lying rat weasel nephew" and since I knew them both, I don't believe Nicky was lying, because I KNEW Phil was a back stabbing weasel and I was eventually proved right, by Phil himself. He should do the world a favor, and jump off that bridge near where he is hiding out today. (I suspect - because he said so in a recent interview - and I will say no more about it because there's no need to involve myself further, other than to say) go and do the world a favor Phil and go feed the fish. Had tour uncle Nick been given the chance, that's exactly what he would've done with you. (Pretty sure Phil reads these things)
      RIP Nicky. Rest in peace.
RIP Phil - Rot In Piss. You're getting old now Phil and one day in the not to distant future you're gonna croak and then your uncle is going to be there to pick you up at the airport on the other side, to take you straight to hell. Where you belong - to pay your debt for all the pain and suffering you caused for so many people here on Earth.
      ~ "Rembrandt" (remember me, weasel?)

Seems like being a Boss in the Mafia was more stress and agrivation than it was worth. They all died too young, has lots or court cases, lost loved ones, had to kill all the time. They had heart problems or spent many years in prison. I'd rather just work a 9-5 and not be looking over my shoulder or worry who's tryna take my spot.

    • @ccali327

The guys who played it smart are generally people you've never heard of because they never attracted enough scrutiny from law enforcement. There are exceptions like Carlo Gambino, and probably the most successful boss in American history, Tony Accardo. The guy lived very well into his 80's and never spent any meaningful time in prison (depending on the source he spent either one night in jail or no time in a cell). The difference between Accardo and the rest, though, speaks to what you are saying. Accardo removed himself from the boss's seat very early on and allowed others to take that position. He maintained power but kept himself at enough of a distance to avoid scrutiny. He survived the Capone era as well which was no easy feat considering people were killed on an hourly basis.
Plus, honestly you only hear of the guys who made money. Most of the time, the average mob guy is scraping by. They do it because they had no other way. 90% of them would never advise their kids to get into it. Even the guys who made money usually lost it due to seizures, costs, etc. With RICO laws, they can and WILL take EVERYTHING from you. Look at Sammy Gravano's ecstasy ring case and what they seized. It was basically everything they had: their home, all their vehicles, bank accounts, their companies, and even $400k in royalties from his book "Underboss." So the most likely scenarios are you wind up with nothing and in jail or dead. If you're lucky, you get out as a broke old man (even if you are able create a podcast, 99.9% of those don't make enough money to provide a good living).
When I was in my early teens, I was enamored like a lot of dumb kids (or the many dumb adults on here). I even used to take bets and do other stupid shit at a young age. Then my family hired a guy who was a made guy out of New York (he was actually the conduit between the mafia and Mad Dog Sullivan) to work in one of their businesses. I worked with him, and I got a first hand view of what that life is usually like. He admitted he had a lot of fun, but spent many of his years in jail (did time with Gotti and Joe Gallo, he swore the rumors about Joe Gallo being gay were true). He was in his 60's, sick with emphysema/COPD, but he had to work a full-time job because aside from losing his money, he had no Social Security. He was doing low-paying grunt work in his 60's. He had no license either so I would have to give him rides. Don't get me wrong. I liked him a lot, and we got along very well, but he was struggling hard, and in a lot of ways he's lucky because he lived through it and wasn't in jail for life. He ended up dying not long after while still working full-time to make ends meet.
In short, anyone who thinks there is glory in that life is incredibly naive.

It amazes that a licensed "labor" attorney can represent for six figure retainers, labor unions who pay "other" known vicious criminals to muscle casino executives

Belonged to an After Hours Club that was frequented by a lot of these Characters. I always kept my distance from them. You knew who was mobbed up just by the way they were treated by the Bartenders and Managers.

The biggest mistake was clipping Angie. The family was never the same. Nicky wacked all his top guys , or they went to jail. He got stuck with stoolies like Tommy Del and Nicky Crow.
