Have you ever seen any of the old Monty Python TV sketches? They did a stage show in the US featuring some of the most popular ones "Live at the Hollywood Bowl," not a movie but something you would enjoy. The only other movie, other than Holy Grail, is "The Meaning of Life," which is really just collection of absurdist skits.
Seconding the previous well-cultured fellow's recommendation, you really should check out the Monty Python's Flying Circus series which aired on BBC prior to the films. It is simultaneously the smartest and stupidest comedy ever recorded. You can't say you've really seen Python until you experience 'The Ministry of Silly Walks', 'The Dead Parrot Sketch', 'The Spanish Inquisition', and other classic pieces (with more crazy Terry Gilliam animation between sketches).
Who the Hell are you, Mr. Valentine? Just watched "Tombstone " and now this! You have the best, most erudite vocabulary of ANY AND EVERY reactioner on RUclips! Period! Subscribing! Wow!
Another great reaction. Nice to see people who don't just enjoy a movie, but enjoy the art of movie making. The Pythons were the most brilliantly silly comic troupe EVER. Watching the movie NOW I don't see it as much about religion, but that people have always been the same. If they had social media back then they would have been posting about big noses. This is timeless.
Great to see you've gotten around to this classic. I think you assessed it correctly. In contrast to the Holy Grail, whose primary objective is just to make you laugh, this movie also makes serious points about "blind faith" and implies one should always question where you get your beliefs- not that they're always wrong, mind you. There is a famous TV debate where Palin and Cleese discuss the movie with members of the church,. Two more tidbits: fellow wordsmith and Latin scholar "Polymathy" does a complete and thorough breakdown of the "Romans Go Home" joke. Last but not least, I will point out that the final song is very popular in Europe to this day- it is played at funerals in Britain and even plays on the radio in Germany.
I think they were really paying attention to what was going on in the world at the time - the trend for revolutionary causes to get bound up by theorists and bureaucrats, for them to splinter further into smaller, competing groups (the PFJ vs the JPF, the sad and lonely Popular Front, Reg's crack about "ego trip from the Feminists" when confronted with righteous outrage - all very real and evidenced by the time this was written), maybe because of the initial stress of becoming radicalised and trying to splinter from the dominant, occupying culture all around, making it harder to trust other revolutionaries and come together intersectionally
Monty Python holds such a special place in my heart. I love how the jokes are simultaneously so smart and so ridiculous, and how the troup was able to carry on for so long while touching on so many cultural and historical topics. I'll be happy to see you share more content from them if you pursue it.
Monty Python had a sketch comedy show on TV that was often hilarious. That's where they built their reputation and got funding for the movies. The TV show is definitely worth checking out.
In the crowded house see you might spot and hear George Harrison of the Beatles (Liverpool accent) who help greatly with funding the movie. (as did Pink Floyd) In the chasing scene, the one last devotee who gets left in the street is Spike Milligan of the Goons who happened to be in the area on holiday 😂
You cant here his voice. And pink floyd didnt fund this one. The first one was funded by pink floyd and like 10 other big british artists to avoid taxes. But this one was funded entirely by George, he sold his house.
"Understand?" "Yes, sir." "Now write it out a hundred times." "Yes, sir. Thank you, sir. Hail Caesar, sir." "Hail Caesar. And if it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your balls off." Fun Fact: The six Monty Python members played 40 characters. Cameos Cameos Fact: Spike Milligan was on vacation in Tunisia while this movie was being shot. When the Python team realized he was nearby, they offered him a part. George Harrison briefly appears as Mr. Papadopolous. The costume designer Charles Knode appeared as the passer-by who saw Brian (Graham Chapman) emerge from the crashed spaceship. Political Parody Fact: This movie pokes fun at revolutionary groups and 1970s British left-wing politics. The groups in this movie all oppose the Roman occupation of Judea, but fall into the familiar pattern of intense competition among factions that appears, to an outsider, to be over ideological distinctions so small as to be invisible, thus portraying the "narcissism of small differences" phenomenon. Music Enthusiast Fact: Eric Idle originally recorded "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" in his normal singing voice. After deciding this was not quite right, he re-recorded it with a Cockney accent, singing the new dub in a hotel room with mattresses pushed up against the walls. The line "Bernie, I said, they'll never make their money back" refers to Lord Bernard Delfont pulling out of financing the movie at the last minute. What Script Fact: When Michael Palin as Pontius Pilate addressed the soldiers daring them to laugh, he was truly daring them. The soldier extras were ordered to stand there and not laugh, but not told what Palin was going to do. Palin, in fact, can barely stifle his own laughter when he asks if "Biggus Dickus" is "risible" to one of the soldiers. The famous scene required a fair bit of planning. Michael Palin, John Cleese and Graham Chapman rehearsed it many times the day before the shoot, with other extras playing the Roman centurion guards, so as to get their timing and movement right and to allow director Terry Jones to ensure the lighting, camera blocking and positioning were all correct. On the day of shooting the extras were changed at the last minute, as Jones knew that the only way the scene would work was if the extras did not know in advance what was going to be said to them so as to capture their reactions to the dialogue and Palin's delivery of it. The resulting comedy gold from this scene is mostly due to the unrehearsed reaction of the new extras. Jones made sure that the whole scene was shot in just two takes. It is believed the second take for most of the setups were the ones used in the film.
When considering the "controversial" scene about Loretta, try to think about the fact that Reg, who scoffs at Loretta, is shown to be a pompous, do-nothing dummy throughout the rest of the movie. I think that puts the scene in the correct context.
Another great one to a LEGENDARY film. & Yes. It IS prophetic! Bit of a look at how much this film has impacted British culture. _Romanes Eunt Domus'? 'People called Romanes they go the house'?_

CENTURION: Conjugate the verb 'to go'.
BRIAN: Uh. 'Ire'. Uh, 'eo'. 'Is'. 'It'. 'Imus'. 'Itis'. 'Eunt'.
CENTURION: So 'eunt' is...?
BRIAN: Ah, huh, third person plural, uh, present indicative. Uh, 'they go'.

BRIAN: The... imperative!
CENTURION: Which is...?
BRIAN: Umm! Oh. Oh. Um, 'i'. 'I'!
CENTURION: How many Romans?
BRIAN: Ah! 'I'-- Plural. Plural. 'Ite'. 'Ite'.

BRIAN: Eh.
CENTURION: Nominative?

CENTURION: Except that 'domus' takes the...?
BRIAN: The locative, sir!
CENTURION: Which is...?!
BRIAN: 'Domum'.
CENTURION: 'Domum'.
BRIAN: Aaah! Ah.
CENTURION: 'Um'. Understand?
BRIAN: Yes, sir.
CENTURION: Now, write it out a hundred times.

CENTURION: Hail Caesar. If it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your balls off.
