The only sports game I bought this year was F1 2019. Codemasters (guys behind the game) don't care about money, they care about the game and the experience and people see that. They constantly update the game and add something new. When something new isn't good they remove it or make it better. I used to be a huge 2k and FIFA fan, but my last games were 17 and 14 respectively
You know sports games have fallen off in the past decade when people would find more enjoyment playing Mario and Sonic at the 2010 Winter Olympics than they would find playing the newest Madden.
I’m buying an OG Xbox so I can play 2k5 and not buy Madden until it is back up to standards by independent reviews (because IGN is going to give every madden game a 7/10+ every year)
Another big problem with sports games: Heavy depreciation. Once a new sports game comes out, the previous is devalued heavily and so as the previous ones before that one. You can buy these in just a couple of bucks in GameStop in the cheap bin. That’s sad. Another bad example is if you want to take it to trade it in, it’s basically worth very little to nothing or you won’t get accepted. Like what the frog?! It depreciates worse than buying a German car
when you put the money you were going to spend on 2k into a new copy of NCAA 14 because your old disc broke and a new ps2 power cord so you can play nfl 2k5
Wow! That’s so on point brotha...it’s sad because the power of the gaming systems are so much better, we should be at the pinnacle of sports gaming not the bottom🙏🏾
Me too bro i cant settle for madden i took that money and got me a ps2 and im playing nfl 2k5 again waiting on my hd converter now even without the converter im still having fun again
I have to be serious, MLB The Show is not a real problem, the game is polished and actually plays like baseball, and it actually works on launch, they do not belong anywhere near the category of ea and 2k
I stopped buying madden games after I was disappointed with madden 16, the only thing I want back is create a team, stadium, and logo. Now I just play madden 08
SDS removed online franchise from MLB since they couldn't find a way to monetize it. Only franchise was the best mode to play with some friends, all gone and the focus went to Diamond Dinasty, I still play my ps3 because I can't afford a next gen console, but the state of the ps4 sports game is extremely sad.
Radames Vaz they didn't do it for money lmao and do you realize how many free 99 cards you get by just playing the game? There's only one currency in the game and is the only sports games right now that's not pay to win
That actually isnt right. I know some game devs at SDS and one told me online franchise was dipped because of a server change (or something like that), and they are working to bring it back
He has a point. I work at a hotel and a kid who was probably 11 or 12 couldn't comprehend why microtransactions and loot boxes were a problem. They're fun for him. He isn't paying for them. And his entire generation shares that mindset. And the majority of them casually play sports games.

Microtransactions for packs of virtual cards should be banned. It's gambling for kids, and whats worse its gambling with no possibility of a monetary return on your investment.
This great video is exactly the description of my review on MS Store for the XBox One Madden 20 Trial. You explained it perfectly, and as an older gamer (all genres not just sports titles) myself, I have definitely seen the change with the lack of effort, polish, QUALITY given to modern game day one releases via these modern lazy developers & publishers. Upvote, shared, spread the word and exercise self control by NOT giving these shit games day one release (or dreaded pre-order) money. They are not worth it and haven't been for a long time.
The reason is Ultimate Team and micro transactions. Once Nba2k gets the money they won’t change anything. And all Madden, FIFA care about is Ultimate Team
You have a point with this whole "Don't buy the game thing" but at the same time, the game is still to blame. A video game is more than just a product--its art. Even if a movie is going to sale well, we expect the writers and directors and actors to care about it being good. It's not the consumers fault that a business doesn't care about making good content.
Really, why pay 60 dollars for a shit game, when you could just spend 15$ on a PS2, and another 3$ for a copy of any older football game from that era that is a million times better than what we have today...
I'm a HUGE sports fan. I play some sports games but there's no need to really. I have one NFL and one FIFA game on my Xbox One. They're all basically the same game with updated rosters (which you can just edit yourself if you want). Even for my favorite sport (hockey) I'll generally buy a new game every other year because buying one every years just silly. Plus I don't even spend the $80 for the new game I wait until the Summer after it got released then buy it as it costs like half the original price. (I have NHL 15,17,19). Doing this also brings more value to each game as you really value it as that's the one you play for 2 years. Plus you really appreciate the huge improvements that the game brings over the 2 year span. I personally think sports games should release a new title ever 2 years instead of every single year.
Sad how true this is. I never would have thought games would get worse as I got older and I miss the days when buying madden was the biggest day of the year for me and it was really fun
For around $70 I bought a retro video game machine to play SNES games. Then for less than a price of one game today, I bought a bunch of games like NHL 96, Madden 95, and Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball and I am having way more fun then I think I would ever have with todays games.
@@arsenalforlife9424 I wouldn't say RTTS is becoming worse. I would say it's becoming stagnant, especially compared to the story modes from FIFA, Madden, and 2k. The narration from RTTS focuses purely on your interactions with your team, manager and your on-field performance, and I personally don't mind that although I understand if others think it's bland. I can't say anything for franchise or DD, I don't play those modes. Lastly, The Show's gameplay is great (has been for years imo), but they still need to improve on the presentation package and especially the commentary, which is easier said than done in a sports game.
still playin 07 on ps2, cant be touched. someone needs to piss on the dumpster fire that is e.a. bring some fresh talent. theirs no way the same devs were involved in the old gen games
Soft drink sports: You need to watch Ryan's latest video. It has to do with the topic of this and talks about Madden showing Madden 19 and Madden 20 logo on the same practice field.
They probably leave modes like Franchise mode very empty to drive people to Ultimate Team, so then they'll pay for packs that will rarely ever give them a player above an 85-90 overall.
So here's how I would do it if I make a sports game. 1. Only one release for every console generation. Say whenever a brand new generation of PS and Xbox drops. This way I can make sure to have the game perform to the console's full potential, also gives me a long-ass development time to make sure the game is completely finished. No NBA 2K18, 2K19, 2K20, FIFA 18, FIFA 19, FIFA 20, and so on. Just gonna name it "NBA on seventh gen" or "FIFA on seventh gen" or something. 2. League license packs. These can be purchased either digitally or physically (these are huge in size so not everyone has good enough internet to download them). Each of these include the teams from those leagues, their uniforms both current and legacy which are unlockable by playing the game, their home stadiums, the leagues' broadcasting packages (most notable in soccer), and the legacy teams. Upon installation these new leagues will also be integrated into the career mode so the next time you load your save/create a new save these leagues will become playable. Ideally these license packs will get released like annually so instead of forking out money to buy pretty much the same game every year you'll spend money to enhance and expand the particular game. You can play it without these just fine. You'll only be missing out on having an expanded library of licensed stuff. 3. Separate releases containing all the cosmetic updates for those who can't be bothered with frequently downloading them. Modeling them takes time too. Players' faces and hairstyles may change during the season and these updates will reflect on that. New uniforms and accessories are included. Again, the game will play just fine, you'll only be missing out on the latest look from teams' new uniforms, players' hairstyles to facial hair (or lack thereof) to tattoos to the shoes and other accessories they're wearing. Broadcasting packages may change too so those are also included. With sports games I want them to be as life-like as possible both in graphics and gameplay. To sit down and watch the video game present the matches like their real life counterpart and have it play true to its real life counterpart is a satisfaction.
Well, I love The Show 21 and haven't spent a dime on Diamond Dynasty, which is a mode I've really enjoyed. I think they're doing it right. I've used the in game system to generate in game currency and XP. Having gotten the game "free" on Game Pass has made it all that sweeter.
I don’t play video games anymore, but your videos are so fucking good dude. It’s a shame nobody is listening yet, but don’t stop making them. Eventually, the tide will turn, people will stop wasting their money, and these evil companies will be forced to change
This pretty much is the reason I haven't bought a new sports title in awhile especially the Madden series. It sucks sometimes playing a game like Front Office Football where the only aspect is the team management size but then again that was the part I enjoyed the most about the Madden series. Playing as my favorite team with all of the players I enjoy watching was just a nice bonus on top so I'll continue to set this one out till I see better.
I NEVER buy these new yearly releases full priced I always wait till I’m lucky enough to find the next discounts a few months after it drops I’ll be able to buy all the latest madden, 2k, and fifa all at once for under $100 at the Black Friday sales. Yet my friends get on me because I don’t get the copies on release dates. It’s sad really these gaming companies are literally bending over these saps and taking advantage of the simple minded consumers and they don’t even notice a damn thing.
I used to regularly buy NHL Hockey games. However, when I bought the 2010 edition I found that having unlocked certain items in game I then had to buy them with real money. Suffice to say, I haven't bought an EA sports game since.
@@jgeorge2693 WAY better. That's actually the reason I played Madden 13 religiously that year. Franchise and superstar were conpelte dogshit, but the physics in that game were quite satisfying. Why they didn't continue building off that engine is beyond me. It had bugs that needed to be ironed out, but still fun
Love the video. MLB 19 this year has done a great job of giving you high tier unlocks in the game from just playing it. DD last year was all micro transactions. This year I haven't spent a cent and my team is 95 overall from unlocks and playing the game. Thats how an UT should be done.
Lack of competition for each genre of sports is the biggest issue. They used to compete based on quality for your money. Now they monopolize and slack.

After Madden 12 I starting buying every other year of Madden hoping it would get better but after this Madden, I’m done buying them until I know they make it better. Never bought in game currency never will. Going back to Madden 12 for good
I agree with your take on 2k. They get a bad rep for micro transactions, however their offline modes don’t require you spending any money and don’t make you any better off. 2ks franchise modes are super deep. The mycareer has never really been my thing anyways so it doesn’t bother me a whole lot.
well NBA2k earns my purchase with just 60 bucks, im a MyGM/MyLeague guy. One of if not the best franchise modes in sports gaming today. And im still playing APF 2k8, update my own rosters annually.
There's a reason I don't buy packs anymore. SDS (San Diego Studios) in my opinion, has the best ultimate team mode by far. It's very friendly to no-money spent players and grinders. If you want stubs, you can buy them straight up and use them how and wherever you'd like rather than be forced to use/buy a stupid alternative currency that only exists in one specific mode. I'm not defending microtransactions, but SDS does it in the least annoying/predatory way possible in my opinion.
7:47 Agreed 100% percent. People say that the game looks exactly like the last one but everytime they try to innovate and make something new, people complain.
I agree with you 100%. I am sure there are various third party roster updates out there for NFL 2K5, NBA 2K11 if you want the current rosters. Also, If you actually wanted to try these games, wait a year or two when they go down to $5 at secondhand stores.
@@s.m.withtheak3024 They have changed. With a one year cycle these companies do a decent job at making a new game every year. Remember that the old games didn't have an amazing amount of new features either
@@lildwell2 That's not true, at least with 2k. 2k19 myleague has way more features than 2k11 for example. I don't think MLB the show has been deleting features either. Games that do that are Madden, FIFA and perhaps some others that I don't remember right now
It’s really a shame where all sports games are today. To this day I still regret selling my ps3 and my all pro 2k8 if they would’ve marketed that game right and got it on the shelves more could you imagine what kind of product they could have made on the current gen consoles I guess we’ll never know. Im sending this video to all my friends who play madden and complain about it and THANK YOU for explaining this because some people might understand u more than me :)
I guess, I'm part of the problem, since I buy the games every year, NBA, Madden, NHL, MLB, I don't touch FIFA anymore. I don't really play Ultimate Team or My Team.. those modes just don't interest me. I'll play normal quick play games, do a franchise with my favorite team and play career mode. That's it. I enjoy seeing changes from year to year and maybe I'm the only one that sees these and enjoys these games like this, but I'm having fun being a sports gamer. Great video, I'll definitely subscribe for more.
I will say that diamond dynasty is a pretty fair game mode. You can keep the rating low when matchmaking to find someone of your skill level. You can also get players by just playing the game, and the grind isnt stupid.
From what this video says about NBA 2K and Madden, NHL seems alot better. Having played NHL for over a decade and yes I have noticed removing of older games features and a bigger emphasis put onto ultimate team, but not as drastic as the other games. The game has over 30 alumni teams none of which are under a pay wall. Thier version of the mycareer type mode has zero micro-transactions, the only place that has them is ultimate team. Every year though the complaint is the lack of a gm connected mode, and the gameplay being way too simuliar year by year.
Turd Ferguson you’re telling the absolute truth I play that game daily and I’m fully satisfied. It’s crazy because imagine what they could do with football games on the new gen.
I primarily play the EA NHL series, when they brought over hockey ultimate team in NHL 11 it was the beginning of the decline. NHL has held up a little better than Madden but the constant focus on HUT took so much away from Be A Pro which has needed an update for 5 years now. Maybe im a sucker for buying it every year at release but as i said they haven't ruined the game like Madden has, yet. I guess the way i show my displeasure is by refusing to buy anything except for the game alone. No gold, silver or platinum edition for me. I'm also a big Forza fan and every year, the top edition ~$100 is almost always worth it, but i would put it in a category all its own as most top editions are not worth it.
I play DD on MLB show 19 and I really like it. I've spent zero money and have a sick team. Admittingly I do play a lot and the gameplay can definitely be improved but for the most part I enjoy it.
After being suckered into buying Madden 13, I only bought Madden 18. It was still garbage. I'm playing Madden 2008 on my computer & won't ever buy another Madden unless they change drastically. Will buy NFL 2K21!
I agree completely, especially with Madden and EA because they have a great opportunity to make a great football game and they really have no competition but instead we get the same Madden year in and year out. I miss being a kid and being hype for all the new sports games
You said 9/10 people that complain about these games will still buy about play them but we also have to take another look... there’s fake perception on the internet. Some people claim to hate these games but their actions show different, while some have legit complaints, concerns, and criticism, others are just upset because something isn’t working in their favor. We see it every year, Madden, 2K and even CoD gets called “trash” by their communities YET they are the top selling games at the end of each year. I believe some people aren’t as upset as they claim, and honestly don’t hate these games as much as they claim... fake outrage giving fake perception on the internet. I do agree with a lot of the points made, seem like we did get more of a quality product back in those days. Great vid.

My Madden purchases in the last 20 years are: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 06, 07, 08, 12, 15, and 17. I sold Madden 17 to my cousin within the first week for literally hot wings and a drink. Less than $20. 2K it goes: 2K, 2K1, 2K2, 2K9, 2K10, 2K14, 2K16 for free on PS Plus. I'm skipping 2k20 and I'm so sad about it. It'll be the first time I ever get to 99 though, and that's exciting.

That’s why I’ve been playing madden 08 to this day. Maybe that will change with the new maximum football game coming out this month.
Madden 08 was so good 😪 I miss those days

They were headed in that direction and with removal of year to year saves even for Franchise and creations, it is now there since mlb the show 21.

I stopped buying madden games after I was disappointed with madden 16, the only thing I want back is create a team, stadium, and logo. Now I just play madden 08
You would be shocked on how little it has changed since then
Same dude, i play 16 frequently still, but I started playing NFL Street 2 again, and that game has more depth then the new Maddens...
The way you describe this reminds me of what happened with what led up to the crash in 1983.

At least Diamond Dynasty as a mode this year is pretty good. 18 was awful though
@InternetUser I totally agree, I think that the gameplay is better than what maddens gameplay, I dont know about 2k though.
Radames Vaz they didn't do it for money lmao and do you realize how many free 99 cards you get by just playing the game? There's only one currency in the game and is the only sports games right now that's not pay to win
@@alejandrodurandelrio6518 I have so many I don't know who to use at this point ^^
That actually isnt right. I know some game devs at SDS and one told me online franchise was dipped because of a server change (or something like that), and they are working to bring it back
"are you over the age of 15" lmao
He has a point. I work at a hotel and a kid who was probably 11 or 12 couldn't comprehend why microtransactions and loot boxes were a problem. They're fun for him. He isn't paying for them. And his entire generation shares that mindset. And the majority of them casually play sports games.

SDS is doing fine though, I can get pretty much every card in The Show just by playing
The reason is Ultimate Team and micro transactions. Once Nba2k gets the money they won’t change anything. And all Madden, FIFA care about is Ultimate Team
2K and MLB The Show actually change their game though.

Madden 01-08 was Madden Prime years
@@Retro_Gamer_89 NHL 1-14 was ea nhl prime years, even NHL 2k- nhl 2k8 was nhl 2k prime years.
For around $70 I bought a retro video game machine to play SNES games. Then for less than a price of one game today, I bought a bunch of games like NHL 96, Madden 95, and Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball and I am having way more fun then I think I would ever have with todays games.
There's only one exception to this rule
And that is MLB the show
Nah I wouldn’t say that man sure the gameplay is always solid but franchise and road to the show is slowly becoming worse

Soft drink sports:
You need to watch Ryan's latest video.
We are in a dark area for gaming period
This is why I'm still rocking Madden 12 👍
Lombardi way what's up!

This man speaks so much truth
