I’m actually shook to read the comments and see that the idea of listening to the snare to find the groove of a song is foreign to so many people. Seems to have helped a lot a people though so keep it up! I’d be interested to see what formula you’d suggest for a drill beat
I know you didn't ask me, but the kicks, hi-hats/snares, as well as the snares/claps/percs/etc. Especially the hi-hats, match your syllables to those and you can create some very dynamic and skippy flows. Experiment with pausing, speeding up, annunciation, your tone and delivery. Hope that helped, God bless!

This helped so much. This really helped me take my time. And I really have this problem, where I hit a hook, it sounds great, then I feel like I need to mix it up, and I abandon and forget the best idea, because I didn't want to sound repetitive. Me not saying anything for a few seconds helped me relax, and enjoy the process so much more. I can't explain it, but even the first 2:20 of this video helped me so much. Drastically different before and after.

hey there, ive been working in the music industry in some way or another for the majority of my life. right now im a professional videographer for a couple bands, but the one im most notably mentioning is two grateful dead cover bands. i am 16 and not really at the point where recording for the actual grateful dead but ill get there someday lol. the main reason im bringing them up is their unique counts. you mentioned 1, 2, 3, 4. the grateful dead however has that, as well as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and everything in-between. now most producers will never go on a 13 count, but there are songs that go on 6/8, 6/4, 3, and tons of other stuff. this is an amazing tutorial for the four count, and for any basic freestyle beat. it is very important to know that some beats you come across wont sound like this. now there is a lot more than just counting on a beat, but this is a much more "dumbed down" version of what could be a 50 paragraph essay on all the music ive encountered in my little career i also just want to talk about my story if anyone is reading and is curious about my involvement in music since i was basically an infant. my dad is a dead head who is also in a grateful dead cover band (one of the ones im working for). as you can imagine, that means i was raised with a near constant background of amazing music every hour of the day. i started learning to understand music before i could understand the english alphabet. i never enjoyed playing instruments, but i liked being around them. theres not many ways to do that as a career that doesnt in some way include camera's. i love photgraphy too, so i figured that recording concerts would be perfect. it is. i started recording my dad at 11 with his phone and my ipad propped up on something. as ive gotten older, ive gotten more and more gear and made more and more connections. hopefully if i take this seriously enough, i wont have to go to college and will just be able to tour with bands my whole life, and at the same time, i wont have to be on the stage in front of thousands of people!
