Thank you for making this video so simple to understand. All of the others on RUclips make it so complicated. New subscriber here just for this video alone.
Every room in my house in Virginia has ceiling fans and I've lived in it since August 2002 and never knew which way those blades should be turning. This has been on my mind recently because winter is almost here. Tomorrow, I plan to turn off all the fanbs and make sure they're Up or Right. Thanks so much Jay.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have watched several videos and all they talked about was the direction of the fan blade. All I needed to know was if the button goes up or down during the summer. I will definitely be saving your video and sharing it with family. Again, thank you! And you get a big LIKE!
Thank you for this simple explanation of up or down! Other videos talked about rotation, remote control setting. Omg! Now I k ow after searching 3-4 videos.
I would think the reverse….if heat rises and you have a ceiling fan; aren’t you just blowing hot air down on you in the summer? Shouldn’t you be taking the cooler air that’s below and drawing it up into the air. Then in the winter time, wouldn’t you want the hot air that’s above the fan to be pulled down to warm you. I can see if the fan was sitting in a window or like a floor fan but this concept just seems off for a ceiling fan.
I'm with you 100%. I've not only done it this way, but when I've forgotten I've felt the discomfort and reversed it! I almost think it's some crazy Mandela effect going on here. We're suddenly in dumb world. lol
Jay, your videos are outstanding. You always touch on a minor detail that is so useful, but rarely explained by other videos on RUclips. Keep up the great work. You have saved me BUCKS with your advice.
And if you're still in the comments section......Hey Jay!!! Those things are handy in Florida as well as Hawaii! I see why the ceiling fans move to distribute the higher hot air, but what's the theory for air distribution the other way? Cool air I guess stays closest to the floors then. Hmmm. Hope you, your wife and your beautiful son are doing GREAT. It's such a pleasure to see a new video of yours come out as they make my day. Love to you all!
Haha I like what you did there :D Hey Patrick!! Good to see you here! Here is the idea behind the summer operation.. In the summer, when the air is blowing over you, that air is actually absorbing some of the heat from the skin. Heat travels hot to cold. So as long as the room air temperature is colder than your body temperature, there will be somewhat of a cooling effect. We all are doing GREAT! Thank you for the well wishes! Our Honda Accord broke down today, with some bad timing on it's part.. It was exciting in a not so pleasant way but I did learn some things from this so next weeks video will be switched to a video about this instead. Hope you and family are doing GREAT (this reminds me of that frosted corn flakes tiger) as well, God bless!!
Thx. In winter I have a freezing floor draft about 3 feet deep. NOTHING has fixed it ( window and door seals, floor rugs, etc). Now I will try what you said...turn the ceiling fans 9n to pull the cold air up. Maybe that will help.
I always forget about ceiling fan switch up or down winter or spring and I Google and ur video literally was so awesome 👌👏 u explained it perfect short and sweet ty I Definitely subscribed to your channel u seem like a smart guy 💕💯👍
Clockwise or Counter would be THE helpful way of explaining it. Not all fans have physical switches on the motor area, but rather a direction button on the remote.
Finally, someone made it for our can understand . Lol Thank you. Good Luck In Hawaii. Now I won't get dizzy looking up at the fan to see which way it goes.
I have a vaulted ceiling with two fans. I run mine basically all year, with one fan blowing up, and the other down. That way it helps move the air in a circular motion.
Thank You! I just wanted to know if the switch should be up or down in summer. Not the scientific info on the fan blades other video's tell us. Thanks for the tip to use a marker to mark the fan to remind us of the direction.
I wish i should of watched the video before messing with my fan 😔 I moved the switch while it was spinning now it wont spin, but lights do work.. anything I can do to fix it?
Can you make a video on how to properly adjust AC vents? Should they be pointed downwards, at an angle, or parallel with the ceiling? What brings the best results, efficiency, etc.
That sounds like a good video idea! In the house we are in now, there are no vents... But if I get an opportunity down the road, I'll see what I can do, thank you for the suggestion!
hey so i did the same thing and flipped the switch and my fan stopped working what do i do they wont even spin but the switch is so loose is it broken?
I knew this since I got my first years ago when I was a kid and installed it but I still give it a like just because I like you and you guys are cool and likeable. Besides I want to help your channel. My fan is on while typing this in Fl.. Keep it cool bro.. 😎
well, it still blows cool air in both directions and i sleep better with it on!! but my question is that why do some ceiling fans without out a light ficture have 2 pull cords, i know one is the control speed, but what about the other cord!??
And some fans have a pull chain that can have 3 speeds forward, then off, 3 speeds reverse, another off. Which when combined with a 3 speed wall switch can easily confuse
Thank you! I am actually not planning on getting a full time job in Hawaii. I think I should talk about that in our next Hawaii update video since that often gets asked. Thank you for the well wishes! Hawaii is great so far! :)
So this is confusing, since when the switch is down (for summer) my fan is spinning clockwise. Yet says in the summer the fan is supposed to spin counter clockwise. SO 1 is incorrect 🤷♀️
What if I leave it in the middle? My sisters pull chain has been broken for nearly 2 years and we don’t quite have the money to fix it. And it’s been on for those 2 years. I just recently put it dead smack in the middle and it turned off the fan. Just wondering if it will harm the fan, or consume any power. I don’t hear the motor running so I’m guessing not.
If it's in the middle, between positions, it should disconnect both windings from power. However, even if it doesn't, turning the fan off with the switch also disconnects it from power.
I would argue that just the opposite is true! Warm air rises so the hottest air is always going to be at the ceiling. Now do you want to blow that hotter-than-room-air DOWN on you during the hottest months? But in the winter, you DO want to blow the hotter air down. But.... if you have thermometer readings showing differently, I would always give way to them.
Regardless of direction of airflow, the ceiling fan will still be forcing convection. Technically doing the opposite would work, but downdraft mode will create a slightly higher wind chill effect
If heat and air conditioning ducts blow air from vents in ceilings rather than from floors, what is optimum position of fan switch during summer and winter?
Regardless of where the vents are, the switch positions would remain the same. Even though the vents may be on the ceiling, hot air will still gather on the top.
@@WordofAdviceTV But in the cold of winter, for example in Wisconsin, wouldn't you want to assist the warm air provided from the furnace in the ceiling vent and push it down to floor level
JUST BOUGHT 4 CEILING FANS AND MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN THE Room AND MY BILL IS DEFINITELY LOWER.. DON'T NEED TO RUN MY AC AS MUCH..WOW.. GAME CHANGER TY. 😂
Save power by turning off the fan when you leave the room - if no one is getting air blown around their skin then there's not many reasons for it to be left on. It's an important habit to get into because many house fires are caused by *unchecked* fans left on accidentally (kids always do it!!!) or by someone ill-informed trying to "keep the house cool" while they are out. A fan motor will often let you know when it's about to die because they sound noisy or strange. The fan speed controller can burn out too, making it run too slow or not at all!
Jay!! Great explanation on the winter mode! I’m never bothered to think through the physics of it and your explanation makes perfect sense. Thank you! After you mentioned that you don’t see ceiling fans in Minnesota, I thought about it and you’re right! Very popular in San Diego having lived there. I too love ceiling fans and just out of habit, installed ceiling fans in our house here almost instinctively. But you’re right - nearly non existent in Minnesota for some odd reason. Hey on the energy efficiency aspect, I agree with you. One caveat / question would be does the “draft” that the fan creates as a result in it circulating the air negate any cost savings as maybe the indoor temperature would then have to be set higher in the winter? Likely a question that will not be answered. Look forward to hear how you guys are doing in Hawaii and how the push up challenge is going! You left MN at just the right time. As you probably heard, 6-8 inches of snow fell last week!
Holt!! Good to hear from you man :) So you appreciate ceiling fans as well! I only gained this appreciation here in Hawaii.. I was living under a rock in Minnesota. About the winter efficiency. I actually read a few ceiling fan articles (including some nerdy ones) before making this video so that I don't accidently say something ignorant lol. Wherever they mentioned winter time, they all preached that the furnace will have to run less often. I do understand what you are saying though... From what I understood, since the air by the ceiling is hotter, the draft would be warmer and would not feel chilly. (but as it keeps running, it will use up all that hot air right?) I have never used a ceiling fan in the winter (Minnesota type of winter) so I honestly have no idea what the right answer is. I'm sure setting the fan speed to low will reduce the draft effect and if it's a high ceiling, it would reduce it even more. The next video I make will be a Hawaii update! :) More on that there.. Still going strong with the push-ups! Were you enticed into joining the party? I tried increasing it to 200 a day but decided that was too many push-ups so I went back down to 100 but increased the reps to 50 2x. And yeah! Wow. Minnesota is setting records!! We did leave on time. But I'm sure that at the same time it's really beautiful there too! Thanks for watching and commenting Holt! No need to reply to this unless you feel compelled to do so :)
I totally disagree with the Summer down, Winter up recommendation. On a LOW setting I have been using ceiling fans for years pulling the hot air away from me and up toward the hot ceiling in the Summer, and pushing the rising hot air back down from the ceiling where it rises to in the Winter.
Yes, a lot of people don't know this. I probably mentioned before, that my wife has to have fans on all the time, even when the A/C is on. 😠 Drives me up the wall...
@Word of Advice TV I dont think your video is true for all ceiling fans, In the Summer my switch gets pushed up and this blows air down on me. And just the opposite for winter my switch does down direction.
i think my fan is reversed I’ve had the switch down and my room has been burning up and the fan hasn’t helped at all but i put my switch up and my room started cooling down
I don’t think I believe you. The fan is going to circulate a certain amount of air no matter what direction. So in the winter time once it blows the hotter off of the ceiling after about two minutes all of the air is going to be approximately the same temperature. So the difference is the draft straight on you as opposed to be in on the walls of the room. A floor fan that is set on oscillate so it blows on me sometimes and somebody else sometimes it’s always cooler when it’s on me directly on me.
That is a valid argument. Thank you for presenting a different point of view. Fortunately I am not the one who came up with this concept so it's not something I need to prove :)
