- I Bought the FIRST BROKEN Xbox Series X Controller - Can I Fix It? When I plugged the controller in it had no power and didn't respond at all. While diagnosing the issue I discovered some gunk on some of the motherboard components. I decided to reflow the main chip on the motherboard in case this BGA chip wasn't fully connected. And that got it to work...until I put it all back together. So it was back to doing more testing to see what was causing the problem.

Have you had problems with your Series S/X controller?
@RuneAhrim Fantasies Ha, ha...ya, those aren't that old.
@RuneAhrim Fantasies You should be thankful because I still have the old black xbox one.
hey my xbox i have the Black screen of death please help
Mine has worked perfectly and I love it!! The new d pad is amazing!!!!
Hi do you have any play station left can send me one please or any one hear have one that you do not want
This was actually really interesting because it was a novel problem you couldn't fix so easily. You were able to figure out the limits of the problem and you basically have a really good idea about the culprit, but could also be still wrong. Intriguing indeed. If it was just a totally unknown situation of not even able to turn the controller on, it would be far less interesting.
Today we have no perfect amount of Thermalpaste... but we still learn A Lot. THUMBS UP Steve 😊😊😊
Who needs button membranes when you can just use thermal paste?
Those appear to be two patch antennas by design (can't see other side of the board to confirm). What you have may be a 1T2R configuration: 1 transmit, 2 receive. So the faulty path is one of the receives which would explain why your reception suffers. Wireless reception is influenced by the square of the distance you are from the source (electrical engineers are taught this in first year). You were on the right track looking at the components in the receive chain.
Take your soldering iron and rotate any of the inline or shunt caps in the RF signal path and see if they crack. A common but hard to spot issue with 0402 caps is cracking when installed by the pick 'n place machine. If they are damaged, then replace as required. A hairline fracture is hard to see but easy to find as the part will literally crumble when you apply heat.
You can swap in the other daughter card and isolate the fault to the radio module or the side with the antennas. Most likely on the radio module side. The extra steps will confirm.
I just got an iFixit Kit and it comes today, I also bought a cheap xbox controller that has sticky buttons icant wait to get it apart and fix it! :D
I'm excited for you! Love it when I get new tools!
Imagine a crossover
Great content! I love seeing inside of expensive things. I've also been inspired to try and fix some of my own devices!
kind of odd that folks sell them on ebay instead of getting a warranty replacement, it's only been like 4 months since the consoles came out
I think the warranty on controllers is 90 days
Heh, must be a non-European person then.
Over here EVERY part of the device has to be covered by the standard 24-month warranty.
Or, the seller broke the controller and knew that warranty doesn't cover it, like chucking it across the room, or giving it liquid damage.
@@SuperSpyMonkey Doesn't hurt to try though. I sent my PS4 Pro to Sony two years after warranty expired and I had even opened it so the warranty stickers were slightly peeled off and they still sent me a fixed console for free. All I had to do was provide proof of purchase. Same with an original PS4 controller I had bought used on eBay! I sent them the eBay receipt and they still accepted it and sent me a new controller, I think I just had to pay shipping on that one. So I would always give the manufacturer a try first, especially with a device so new and with an issue that doesn't seem like there was any tampering done.
most of thems store and amazon returns people just buy bulk lots of that stuff that may or may not work and test and resell it how it is
Could have been bought from a scalper, I doubt they offer warranty.
been watching your channel for years and everything i know about fixing game consoles is thanks to you man, keep it up!
Nice to see troubleshooting in action!
this was especially interesting since it was a very unique problem, the first of its kind, really enjoyed this one dude
Did you ever find a solution to this? I have the same issue. If I disconnect the wire it works for up to 20 feet though. It’s not a huge deal, just curious.
The man who is always so happy to buy broken stuff. 😂
ikr
I would be too if I was smart
If it smelled like a perfume, they probably had sticky buttons on their controller as that's what I used to do. Now saying my old controller smell.
Hey man, i gotta tell you, iwatched nearly 8Hours of your Videos in the past 3 days after first discovering you. Your Videos are so good and so damn interesting, that i really want to start repair stuff. Love you and your vids :)
I love your videos so much! Keep it up👍🏻can’t wait for 1 million🙂
How weird is that. I'm looking forward to see you fixing this in the future.
I ordered your driver kit, can't wait to try to get back into the repair game. I have not touched a PCB in years but I was a Quality control inspector and ran a solder wave years ago, wish me luck... I was curious where to get my parts now that there is no radio shack :p
Greetings from Germany. Huge Fan of your Videos :)
I hope People will never stop putting broken stuff on Ebay so you can buy and fix those. :D
Great start to the weekend love your content!
Glad you enjoy it!
why would any one dislike this guy's videos??
PS fanboys?
Because there was no "Perfect amount of thermal paste".
If one can easily get piles of broken PS5 controllers, but finding a single broken Series X controller is noteworthy, that definitely speaks a lot on their respective quality.
Not super surprising. The Series X controllers are near identical to the Xbox One controllers making them the 3rd (?) revision of the same controller. The Dualsense is basically in field testing at this point in it's life.
Maybe there are just more PS5 sold than Series X. Just a theory.
There's more to it than that. How many have been sold compared to the others? What is the warranty policy like? etc.
@@bsanp yeah i don’t get how people don’t get this
Had this before the white filter on the rf line goes bad look at it with a thermal cam and you will see its shorted replace it and she will live again
Steve gotta read this! Upvote
Well you might be able just to connect just a long wire that could work as an antena. Fixed this issue on my nintendo switch which had the same problem. I just took an old laptop antena, cut it to size and vola.
Oh wow that's really a weird problem. If the chip was the problem then the controller would not function at all i guess. Maybe the other wire has a bent in it or just a faulty cable... who knows. Great video again steve 👍🏻 can't wait for the broken PS5 video's
It's coming! Just finished editing it.
Why was there a color difference in the PCB where the reflowed chip sat on the non/kinda/sorta working controller and the known good test controller? Just seemed odd like so ething had become rather warmish. Great vid, thanks for the ride along!
Hi @TronicsFix,
Maybe the antenna is shorted with the shielding. If thats the case then it might worth checking continuity between the antenna and its shielding (It could cause a short to one of the powersupply rails).
If the antenna was shorted to the shielding then it would have worked when I plugged the other antenna in.
@@Tronicsfix They both could be broken in some way, but only one antenna output prevents from booting. It may be worth checking also the other board or even connector itself.
@@FrankDrebin If the other antenna was broken then it wouldn't work when it was plugged in to the working socket.
@@Tronicsfix If you know how antennas are wired inside the chips then sure.. From what I can see on the video the antennas are for different frequencies, not sure if these are 2.4 + 5 GHz for wifi or something else, but backend will be way different.
@@Tronicsfix At GHz ranges RF is pure magic anyway, classic electronic is just not applying to it.
I didn't see the videos but I am asure it is awesome as always 😀
Yoo I was waiting for one of your videos to come out.
Thanks for watching!
@TronicsFix it may also be the antenna and not the chip. I don't know how common that would be, but i think it is a possiblity.
That was my thought
Another video, another saved evening :)) Thank you Steve 😊😊
My pleasure!
The original owner must have given up after plugging it in just a couple of times - thus brand new controller - great buy Steve !!!
What computer program do you use to test your controllers as far as analog drift, buttons not working, power supply, and testing the batteries?
Hello love seeing u fix controller
Yes been waiting on this. Good video as always
Appreciate it!
@@Tronicsfix appreciate u I’m young but one day I might start looking to fix stuff like this
I love these repair videos
Glad you're enjoying them!
Change the big Mainboard from the good working one with this one and connect the Wire. Maybe the Antennacable is making any Short/Circuit that it doesnt have to do normally
What temp and airflow do you use for reflowing the chip or thumb sticks
My Pro Tech Tool Kit is arriving today. Used your link to get $10 off. Let's take everything apart. 😂😂
bruh those new grip plates are so hard to get off! it's worth it though because they fit a lot nicer than the old style and don't creak / shift around like they did before. (had to remove one of mine because the trigger was sticking due to the foam pad being placed incorrectly in the factory)
overall, i think it's a big improvement over the previous ONE S controller.
Not much to add, just want to comment that the perfume smell suggests to me something was spilled on it or it burned out and they tried to cover up the smell.
It's also possible they sanitized it with some sort of scented wipes, but it's usually not that strong, especially after a long period of time.
Hi Steve, what is the game pad tester software you use??
Dang!.. your power of deduction is uncanny.. kudos to you sir XD
Do u ever have to buy any new electronic stuffs? As u can repair in any condition. U saved a lot of money dude..
Did you measure the impedance of the antenna on that side of the known good controller from the cable , seems to me the only thing that could cause a condition like that would be some kind of problem on the antenna side, else why would unplugging it remove the fault ?
I know you checked with the other side , but are you sure they are both the same ?
it smells disgusting
* takes a giant whiff and caughs
wait..........you knew it stunk and you did that anyway? lol
reminds me of adrian's digital basement. This tantilum capacitor is bad. When they fail they stink like crazy. He then removes it. And THEN HE BLOWS IT ANYWAY!!!! Then he's like man it stinks. lmao
isn't that what everyone does though ?
LOL
@@Creedoo if I know it stinks then he'll no
I've just remembered myself at chemistry. Teacher told us that one of test tubes has concentrated vinegar. And what did I to check that? Took a giant whiff
Hi Steve! I have an xbox one 1708 model controller and it has a similar problem. Unlike the new xbox series controller, the previous model (1708) has only one connector while the newer one has two (as shown on your video). So the controller i have works fine but i have to leave that connector unplugged or else it doesn’t power on. However in my case, it works fine even at a certain distance (6 feet) so maybe some kind of short?
Hey you might not see this but just asking/trying to help- do you should also test the mic in the ps5 duelsense controller because that may have issues?
Good video 😀👍
Thank you 👍
Hi can u help me... I have an Xbox one controller and I dropped it so the analogue stick snapped and the other small half of it is stuck in the thumbstick. Is there a way I can fix it by joining it back
Did you try some of the components on the cord of The other board the part where it's soldered into there could be a component that went bad there that could be shorting it where it is not working
Hi, what is name of the software you are using to test the game pads?
@TronicsFix- My question may sound dumb but can’t we just connect the two Antennas into a single point(that was working properly) just to add a small boost to the wireless reception. Sorry for my ignorance as I am not a technical person.
🤗
solder reflow are great way to fix (if the chip not broke/fire) no power. in Teknisi Ndeso, few abandoned Nokia phones turn on.
HI Love your video's , thank you
Thanks for watching!
I just randomly went on this channel and I saw this video was uploaded minutes ago. This wasn’t recommended, and I didn’t get it via notification.
Thanks for stopping by!
Please send it toTheCod3r. The PS4 video repair was amazing.
I broke the left antenna connector and it's stuck in the antenna "head"... Can they both be replaced ? I have a X1S controller to take one from hope it's compatible
I find these videos cool. 👍
Could it be the actual antenna has break in the middle of it?
Good idea, but if that was the case then the other antenna wouldn't have caused it to turn off.
@@Tronicsfix electronics are weird I once fixed a go pro by putting it in the fridge. Don’t know if that’s worth a go? 😅
Hey @TronicsFix do you like the 117 multimeter?? I'm in the market for a new one.
that was clever with the marker I liked that lol I would have been dumb to not do that
My switch was water damaged. I got back working , but the fan turns on after i power off the unit and won't stop unless I turn the switch back on or unplug the battery. Any thoughts?
Its impresses me how these controllers look more complicated than consoles from 20 years ago
I have same problem, but also when connected to that antenna socket bord with chip becomes warm and start to smell. At least i can use it wired now. BTW warranty is full year but because these controller does not sell officially here (Ukraine) i had to import it from Poland and warranty return is only available from supported countries (When i type my Ukraine address nothing happens, but if i type my Poland shopping address it proceed to send it with UPS to Austria. Because UPS is also overpriced in Ukraine it's cheaper to just buy another one). By the way it's aqua shift model. Front mold manufactured in February 2021 and back mold is from July 2021.
Imma look for series x 2 elite controller.
As my left thumb stick doesn't push in and make the click noise anymore.
Would that be covered in 1 yr warranty or should I just try fix it."10 months old"
That was me, I farted in the box.
Imagine lol
Hey friend , I realize that the anthena cable its the problem !!! I had the same problem and just replace the anthena cable from an xbox one s controller and working now!!! Try it and come back with the news!!! Regards from Mexico!!!
I hope TronicsFix will make video of common issue of series X controllers - unresponsive Y button.
What if the antenna connector on the MCU board is shorted when you plug in? You can test it.
Did you try if the Bluetooth worked fine ? It could still be used as a wireless controller for a PC.
I can’t wait for this repair
Glad you're enjoying these!
And a new subscriber!
Hello Steve, I've got a question to about a problem of my Ps4 Pro. My Ps4 only reads the Disc (Blu-ray or DVD or Game Disc) when it stands in horizontally way but not in the vertically on its vertical stand. Do you think the Laser is broken and might be replaced or do you think maybe just to clean it? Thx for answering maybe, have a great day ang greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 here.
great video :)
When I built my new computer I started it out as a pile of components with no case. When I put it in the case, I forgot the antenna (which is just externally connected to a port in the back of the motherboard. It freaking worked!!! I was still getting high speed internet without an antenna. I was shocked.
Hi - have you exp where a ps4 console won't charge a known working DS4 controller. Issue started when I tried connecting a mech keyboard. Keyboard worked for a couple of minutes then stop working. Tried googling the issue but I keep getting ds4's faulty ic result.
Where can I get quality replacement for the thumb stick controllers ?
I have a sinking feeling that the next generation of controllers will glued together.
I hope a bunch of broken Xbox series X controllers break so we can get the “I bought 15 broken Xbox series x controllers” video can be a thing, great video man
What is that liquid you using in 4:07 ?
Thank you!
I beg you reply my ps4 controller right analog stick is making click noises when i move it right , its stiff and if i press hard enough i can spin the nub of the ps4 controller what should i do to fix it
Hey tronicsfix do you guys still clean consoles that have dust and roaches
2:24 Those batteries are not rechargeable so why should it be higher with fully charges batteries when you are using alkaline?
I know this doesn't has anything to do with the video but i hope you can help me, the fan on my ps4 is so noisy and i don't know why, i already cleaned the console and even replaced the thermal paste but it's still very noisy for some reason and it's kind of annoying, is it normal it being noisy or is there something wrong with the console? :(
We need to figure out how to look at the boards without a schematic now.
When u r so fast even the “who’s been a true fan for over a year”aren’t here
Thank you for the good video. 👍
Thanks for watching!
I used to have rumble motors are annoying sometimes it short circuits it
0:08
Sticks his nose in it immediately 🤣
If you took a chip off a donor board would you not have some solder balls on it to just do a reflow on the install?
Bought a tool kit to try and repair a sticky B button and a weird Joystick Click (it only register when pushing down the joystick very hard and not when clicking normally). The B is now working properly but not the joystick... Don't know what I should do
A great video could be trying to install a different more durable analog module for Xbox and PlayStation controllers with drift. You seemed intrigued by those modules in the new Atari controller- wonder if that could be used. Anywho, great stuff as always Tronix
No power?? Does it buzz or hum when plugged in?? Mine does and has no power
Don’t remember if you mentioned it in this video but where can I find cheap/ decently priced saudering equipment?
I mean solder (misspelled that bad)
I'd use amazon
Could that antenna wire be what's faulty?
The buttons seems to work *while only moving the analog sticks*
Might be dumb but I hate piercing the warranty sticker, I like spending time to peel it and safely keep it until I’m done and I’ll put it back when I’m don’t it feels right, no matter what I don’t want to tear it
Why don't you try the known good D-Pad board with the 'faulty' controller. I say that because I recently purchased an Xbox One Fornite controller that had a faulty 'view' buton and replaced the power board and it fixed my issue.
Also sponsored by me. Lol I did give ya the idea. Sorry had to toot my horn. Your videos are always awesome. Maybe you and MyMateVince should have another fix it challenge for this year
Yo can u make a vid of how to fix deadzone on xbox elite v2 controller
Funny because i have a xone pad and it seems that it has same problem. I’ll try to resolder it later 🤞
