Leaders of the Kaale Paani Da Morcha, a group protesting the severe pollution in Ludhiana's Budda Nullah, announced today that they will take action themselves to halt the flow of pollutants, as the state has failed to do so.
“Our protest began on June 18 of this year, and we urged the state government to take action by September 15. Since no progress has been made, we will now address this pollution ourselves,” stated Jaskirat Singh, a leader of the morcha. “Despite investing over Rs 650 crore to treat the contaminated water, it remains toxic,” he added.
Leaders from various political parties showed their support for the protests and gathered to participate in a seminar organized by morcha members at Punjab University’s Golden Jubilee Hall today. An organizer noted that, despite being invited, no representatives from AAP attended the event.
Criticizing successive governments for their failure to address environmental pollution, morcha leader Colonel JS Gill (Retd) stated, “Political parties have failed to hold industrialists accountable for water pollution, as they have funded their political campaigns.”
Dr. Amandeep Bains, another leader of the protest group, mentioned, “The Central Pollution Control Board has indicated that industrial units are prohibited from discharging chemicals into the water body, yet the state has taken no action on this issue.”
Congress MLA Pargat Singh from Jalandhar Cantt stated that the issue extends beyond just Buddha Nullah, affecting more than 1,200 water bodies throughout the state.
Simranjit Singh Mann of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), former MP Balwinder Singh Bhunder, Dakha MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali from the Shiromani Akali Dal, former IAS officer SS Channy from the BJP, and Balwinder Kumar from the Bahujan Samaj Party also addressed the gathering..
