80% research, 20% playing sadly. Dad of 3 and a busy day job means 5 minutes researching on my phone is eminently more doable than playing sadly. Great point on enjoying what you have - “research” creates a pressure to buy for me, and I agree with you that it doesn’t always feel worth it when the game comes (particularly when it’s 2 weeks for a NES game to come from the US to the UK!).

I am extremely guilty of this. Part of it is that I don't have the time to play games like the Phantasy Star series while I am studying fulltime, but listening to the soundtracks or listening to youtube documentaries about them while I study helps me to feel like I am experiencing them in some weird way.

Going back to the Sega Game Gear after all these years since childhood opened my eyes to all of the possibilities there were to have fun with on the system. I only had six games for it by the end, so seeing it had something like Ristar, Streets of Rage or Shining Force today, it would've blown my little mind.
I had a period of my life where I was more interested in research and preservation about games, I didn't play very many for a long time. I was enamored with the PSP scene which in turn led me to collect for it and eventually led to the interest in the PS Vita I developed day one. But I realized a few years back, while what I was doing sparked a lot of creative thinking and awareness within video game's history, I realized I missed out on actually experiencing it in action during the present. I sold off games I'd never play and honed my focus on one or two at a time to maintain a mindfulness about developing less of a scatter brained mindset (Also, thanks ADHD).
During that period of learning patience and mindfulness in gaming a few years back, my late friend I lived with showed me their favorite game and begged me to play it with a glimmer in her eye you can't say no to. She did that after she realized I had an original Sega Genesis I had hooked up recently at the time to play some childhood games, and then she came back downstairs to show me Rocket Knight Adventures. I ended up playing it all day and into the night until I beat it thoroughly while they went crazy with glee and cheered on. Would never have played such an amazing Genesis gem I missed out on had she not been there. It was a nice time. I think of that every time you show off your love for the game too in silly ways.
The only thing this video did was to not make me very hungry and perhaps a little fearful seeing all of those bananas! Let's just say they're trying to kill me every chance they get. ;P
Also, Rayman for PS1 is the best! One of my favorite childhood games.

I'm glad someone is talking about this! I mention this from time to time when I meet other people who are interested in retro games and I usually ask them if they experience this. They usually say no, and It makes me feel like I'm less of a gamer at heart, until I realize that it's just because I happen to be in a very lucky position to be able to afford more games than I can play. This video helped me with that realization so I thank you for solidifying within me that my passion is real.

    • @RetroBirdGaming

I think what it comes down to is just that some of us are SO into retro games that there's a million things within the retro gaming sphere vying for our attention. So, we just need to take a step back and think about what we can do to maximize our enjoyment with all of it. It's easy to get sucked into the research and discovery (and everybody will prefer to do either to more or less of it). I made this topic because I knew a lot of people could relate :)

I think research is necessary with the rising prices in games. There are several games on NES and Sega Genesis I have researched and want to get but cost has become very prohibitive. All my Sega games are CIB as well which makes it more difficult. I ate a banana and some raisen bread while watching this video. It was delicious.

    • @tr1bes
      @tr1bes 3 года назад

In the past, I want to collect the legal way but time has changed. The prices of video games have gone up and my principle has gone out the window. I'm just going to emulate it if I want to play it. My rule is never to buy any games over $100 regardless of any generation. I purchase Everdrives for NES, SNES, N64, Genesis and Game boy advance. With that, I can play any games I desire without having to fork over more money. Also this way, I save spaces on my tiny game room. Every gamer collector major enemy are space and dust.

I tend to binge play games for a month or two until sated and then casually research game until I feel the itch again. The research doesn't take place of gaming. It builds my appetite.
I think I can't play games at a continuous pace like I could as a kid because I try to savor them too much. Everything has to be perfect and real life worries and distractions tend to spoil that to a degree. I can't imagine enjoying a story heavy game if there's something else on my mind.

However I do still buy games blind if they have wild names like: Explore the Dungeon Because I Don't Know on the 3DS a while back. In 2002 I bought Monkey Ball on the NGC even though I didn't own a NGC! I've since corrected that & funny thing is I'm now doing research on NGC games!

Compiling that list was fun, slowly checking it off has been rewarding but I’ve barely played a single one so far cause there’s just so many to get. Never wanted a complete Genesis library and not all of the game in this sub-set are good games but they look amazing next to each other on a shelf. It’ll be my own little ‘Genesis Does’ museum.

I really love researching video games. Just reading the history is very entertaining. When I was young I disliked books and just wanted to play video games. Now I read more about them then I play. Everytime I read about games and I think I like it, I put it on a list. And after a few weeks I watch some videos about it. Am I still hyped after this? Than the game goes to the wanted list. And then I wait when I get a deal. Years ago I came across the Garfield game on the Genesis. And just a week ago I found it for the price I want it (10 bucks). But the researching part and the search is just as entertaining. Jeez, we're getting old...

Found so many AA Gems for 2000s consoles and handhelds but older has so many to discover its a surprise each time for me. Mostly I have to discover as the real hardware is hard to find for me so I'll have to emulate it but the history on them or emulation discovery is enough for me. Each genre I dive into is a new wonderful discovery. Can't deny the watch a review of a favourite game part. Did not expect that in this video.
I probably discover a lot, say a handful of videos every so often while playing, as its via emulation or the hardware I have/if the game is in my area locally then it depends on the access, the mood I'm in or what value it has (not monetary) like say a demo disk, startup disk or something else. I've discovered many games by searching the studio on wikipedia or from RUclipsrs covering a game I've never heard of..

Great video! Less is more I think. Like you said, as kids we had fewer games and dedicated more times to the carts we owned. As an adult, I’ve fallen into the trap of buying too many games so now limit my collection. I definitely spend more time researching than playing though 😂. I need to change that

That's why I love roms and retropie. They are an easy way to find out those hidden gems i missed out on as a kid. If I really like it, I will absolutely buy it physically. Love my retropie, but there's just something about physically having a game I am really into.. But to me, there is no wrong answer. Game on a crt, or hdtv, physical or emulators, it doesn't matter to me. The only real crime would to have these games go into obscurity being lost to time, never to be played again. With the invention of the internet, I have also found that a few games that I loved as a kid, are actually considered to be shitty to the gaming community. That happened to me specifically with Friday the 13th and nightmare on elm Street on nes lol. But it doesn't diminish my love for them. Great video!

I don't really research the games too much. I like being surprised about a game and I feel some of these introspective videos precondition you to think a certain way about video games. Especially the ones considered to be the best.
I've slowed down my collecting and now focused on my backlog and realized what specific games that I actually enjoy playing. I recently modded my Atari Lynx and it was like discovering a whole new world of gaming that hit all the nostalgia boxes and they were a lot more fun.

My thing is series and developers. Once I play a game and I love it I suddenly start buying everything in the series or everything ever made but that particular developer.

When I first started collecting for Super Nintendo, I probably spent 95% of my time just binging SNES Drunk videos to learn more about the library and find new stuff that I had never heard of before. Everyone knows about Super Metroid or Super Mario World, but I had never in my life heard of Pocky and Rocky, Ninja Warriors, Skyblazer, Space Megaforce, Metal Warriors, etc etc. I was enthralled that the library had so much quality that I had never known about, and as a result, I had a wish list of probably 90+ games before I had even beaten 5. Shortly after, I went a bit overboard on collecting - attending swap meets, hitting up every retro game store I could find, browsing ebay... and then I did this AGAIN for Sega Genesis when I bought an Analogue Mega SG. A couple times, I bought 5+ carts all at once.
Well the collection started piling up in my closet and I hadn't even made a dent in actually completing most of it. These days I find myself only actually buying a new game once every year or two (but this is probably also because the titles I still badly want are now priced as high as 400 dollars). Instead, I've been focused on clearing the massive backlog that I created for myself... and after 3 years, I've probably beaten about 40 - still less than half of the collection. I've learned there really is no rush with this hobby. It's easy to get swept up in it all, but certain games (like FF6, my most recent game finished) can take 50+ hours to fully complete.
Plus I still play modern games as well... As working adults, time just isn't on our side to ever finish it all. Good games come out faster than we can reasonably finish them. Tears of the Kingdom is out next month. How many hours is that going to take? What about Final Fantasy XVI? Diablo IV? Star Wars Jedi Survivor? The Advance Wars Reboot? How long will it take to learn Street Fighter 6 to play it at a middling level against my friends? I think this is all within the span of just about the next 2-3 months. It's a losing battle for sure.

No, nothing made me hungry but that's probably because immediately before watching I ate a lot of something very filling that wasn't very good.
In the last couple of weeks I've been realizing that researching and optimizing is itself a valid hobby. It's not gaming or learning the skill you're researching or creating something, but it is also a hobby. Now that I see that, I have been much more able to comfortably and guilt-free do both activities by just addressing directly 'do I want to do this thing (with the choices and money that requires) or do I want to learn about this thing (with the choices and money that requires)?' It's given me a lot of peace.

I usually spend a couple of minutes researching games before I buy them. I generally look up the trailer and then a gameplay video to see if I'm going to like the game style or not. Sometimes I should be a little more thorough in my research, as it can lead to disappointments from not exploring the game more in-depth before buying and ending up with the wrong impression of what the game is like (I'm looking at you, Legend of the Skyfish).
Also, I'm getting the impression that bananas are one of, if not absolutely, your favorite foods.

The instant access to info is great, but I still miss good game magazines like EGM and NextGen. Oh yeah, I thought I was the only one watching vids of games that I own and already played (and still play) 😅

Sometimes I am just excited to own certain games. Like, for example, I'm really not an RPG guy. That being said, I LOVE owning some and getting to look at the box art and manuals. And some are just fun to boot up and see the graphics or play as far as I feel like investing. SO that's my initial response to this idea, but I've been trying much harder to put some serious time into the games that I've purchased. That being said, now my fiancé and I are working on playing through Hello Kitty Roller Rescue LOL!

And it has new content like a Mr. Dark boss battle and a few new stages. You should try it! The same guy also made a Rayman 1 level creator called Rayman Redesigner.

I find l am doing more research into getting good deals than into actual game content. Always looking for games on Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, Mercari, local swap sites, garage sales which are listed online, and so on. If a game is unknown or not even that good it's always easier to justify picking it up if you swing a killer deal for it. Then if you give it a try and hate it, you experience the bare minimum of buyers remorse.
