Kubrick abused the ever-living shit out of her. He made her do the baseball bat scene over 100 times. He kept her isolated by telling the other actors to ignore her, don't give her pity. He would praise Jack in front of her, for his work. Said nothing to her. He always yelled at her, told her to do more, be better. Called her useless, worthless, had no talent, etc, etc. He pushed her so far that she started losing hair. She lost weight because she was unable to eat because of him. Stephen King LOATHES this movie because of what Kubrick did. Not just to Shelley but to the story itself.
Another reason why I don’t like Kubrick as a person. He’s a dick. He took Stephen King’s original story into a movie and wasn’t faithful to it. He even ignored Stephen. And he abused poor Shelley.
When people are actually in a complete state of terror, they loose control of what their body does, and they act in all sorts of strange ways. Shelly’s performance seems to be a realistic depiction of that, but I feel like most people are used to actresses putting on a graceful ‘afraid’ performance, rather than actual victims snd how they look when they are fearing for their life.
Yes i agree. Her performance was extremely realistic. When watching the movie i was rooting for her so bad because of the trauma she was giving in her acting. Made the character so real.
People don’t always care about their outward appearance especially when they are old. As long as Shelly is safe and happy who cares what she looks like.
No matter what I have seen her in, she was always great at acting. Anyone that walks away from Hollywood, is bigger and better than we will ever know. Thanks Shelly
I always loved Shelley Duvall. My favorite role was her as Wendy in The Shining. I almost feel bad on saying that but she really gave her all even though Stanley Kubrick pushed her way too far throughout the filming. My other favorite role was Olive Oil. That movie is so nostalgic to me. She was so perfect in that role. I'm glad she's doing better now.
She is doing much better. I'm from the town she's from in Texas. She is no longer walking around the town rambling about aliens. I've seen her three times since doctor Phil and she seems mentally coherent and more sane.
Dr Phil is a bad dude. I knew someone else who dealt with him and she was exploited by him too. Thank God she escaped him and sought real support for her mental health issues. He does far more harm than good.
I live down the street from Ms.Duvall we've been neighbors for almost 20 years we live in a small town of 1800 people so I see her quite often. Back in the 2000s she used to drive in a Lexus Truck and it stopped working she took it into the mechanic shop where my friend works it turned out she never did an oil change when she bought the car she ran it for years the oil was like jelly my friend said. She know drives some kind of Toyota truck it looks like she lives in the truck but she doesn't she just travels with a lot of junk in the front seat and dashboard. She's a really nice lady but you can tell when speaking to her she isn't all there.

I hardly think The Shining was a flop. It's become a movie that has been more and more appreciated over time. I consider it one of the best films of all time. Her acting in the film and Jack's acting were both incredible, and sadly she wasn't really "acting" in a good number of the scenes.
She was brilliant in The Shining. You could feel her fear. It has to go down as one of the greatest horror films ever made. I don't watch horror today and I'm sure the Shining was one of the reasons why!
Here's an interesting fact: Christopher Lloyd was originally wanted for Jack Torrance before Jack Nicholson got the part. Oddly enough Lloyd and Shelley Duvall would eventually play a married couple in the 1991 scifi comedy movie, Suburban Commando, with Hulk Hogan
To think jack Nicholson character died by freezing to death outside in the hedge maze and the classic line Christopher Lloyd's character from suburban commando was I WAS FROZEN TODAY
The Shining is one of my all time favourite horror movies. Saw it on release back in the day and probably 15 times since then. Simply gripping and brilliant.
I feel so bad for her, Stanley pretty much ruined her for life. If it wasn't for the ptsd that was inflicted upon her on set, she'd probably have a much better life- more movie roles, more fame and succes, and she probably would have aged a lot better
It makes me sad to hear of her suffering because, it doesn't seem what she lost of herself filming The Shining was worth a small bit of fame & it doesn't appear she gained much fortune.

The directors need to be held accountable for the stress they put on these women like tippy from the birds by Alfred Hitchcock and now Shelly. There was no reason to put these women in a position of psychological trauma for a movie. It takes away from their acting and lively hood.
