After almost drowning in the sea of rain falling onto Fradley, a new menace threatened my journey as the furious weather switched tack, turning instead to attack me with blazing rays of sun at a million degrees. Parched, weak and craving to escape the furnace I hauled myself to the back of the boat and just about had enough energy to propel the boat in search of shade, even as my last drops of water were exhausted. This is that traumatic tale.

Theme music: "Vespers" by Topher Mohr and Alex Alena, from the RUclips music library
This is like Thomas the Tank Engine for adults. Absolutely fantastic. Relaxing and thoughtful.
I love that comment.
Ahh, what a great comment! I'm a kid at heart too!
Bobby the Brit Boat...
Ha, so true! I even like the end music, makes me feel happy and content.
yes I always seem to be watching it when I wake at about 2.30 am to empty the cassettes. I drift off to sleep to the sound of the barge.
It’s just the momentum of those Diesel engines and that chug chug mixed with the countryside views that makes canals so peaceful🙂
Watching your vids is like stroking a cat; the heart rate drops and all else fades away :) Sounds like I may have died but just on the verge, relaxed! :D Particularly appreciated the wildlife shots in this one, thank you.
And just when you really need a wee puddle of sanity in this mad world, David uploads...a real slice of a different world...thanks chum, made my weekend, and I'm certain I'm not alone in this 🏴👍
I enjoy how, even after all these years, you still take the time to explain the idiosyncrasies of canal life.
Ha, cheers yes I still get lots of new subscribers who haven't seen all the early videos so I like to explain what I'm doing else I get lots of repeat questions.
Well at least you get rain once in a while. I am in the US in the southwest and who knows when we will see rain again. LOL!!! Anyway, hope you stay cool. And can I just say thank you for not putting a bunch of annoying music on your videos. I love hearing the sounds going on around you.
Another enjoyable cruise with you, thanks again David :) It's always a lovely time watching your videos.
Wonderful, relaxing, beautiful. Thank you for another video
It's so peaceful to watch and relaxing to listen to. Thank you.
Weather has taken a bit of a dip since this was filmed, but it does show how idyllic our countryside is. Smashing
No matter the time of day, your videos always make for a relaxing time and much cheaper that a shrink!
So nice to see you back with (semi)regular cruising video’s.
DoctorDelta 20hrs ago? Video only came out 1 min ago.
@@peppertalks6948 I occasionally, and somewhat at random, put the vlogs up a bit early on Patreon.
Why do I have this feeling that you make better feature films than many mainstream channels these days? Love your narrow boat adventures
I enjoyed a lovely cruise along the canal in air conditioned comfort. Thank you David.
I am from India and I don't know English well but your vlogs attract me very much and your picturization of nature is just incredible . Carry on. Love from India . God bless you.
Thank you
A timely upload, as it was the perfect antidote to the terrible, horrible, no-good, very-bad day I had yesterday. Thanks.
That sounds most unpleasant.
Been watching your blog for a couple of days found it so boring but then realised that I am getting addicted to it please carry on on I will carry on watching love it.
I loved this cruise. It was so Andy Pandy - comfortable, amiable, positive and delightful 😊
This is one thing I've being missing, with all this lockdown business: a new cruising video! So relaxing, so calm... Too bad we have nothing like this, here in Brazil.
My goodness, this is so pretty David..... realize... your living many of ours dreams, and our pleasures match so well. Love your speed, even on a wide angle lens.
Sooooo relaxing. For us. For you it's a workout followed by a heavy edit. It's not unappreciated chap.
Loved it.
Of all the boating channel’s I enjoy yours the most 🙏🏻
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
So nice to "cruise" this afternoon as I unwind from work. Thanks for the ride👍
Thanks for this wonderful video, David. The countryside along the canal is glorious and made for a very uplifting video in these difficult times.
Stunningly beautiful cruise. Love how you just let the viewer enjoy the view from the front and wondering “what might be around the corner”.
You’re back in my neck of the woods, thank you for another great vlog, you really are so civilised David!
My wife says, "find something for us to watch while we wait on fireworks."
So I queued up CTC!
She then says, "Oh this'll put me to sleep for my afternoon nap"
Followed by "WOW! He operates the locks himself? That's really cool!"
My plan is coming together ...
I love your vlogs, they’re so pleasant to watch and make me smile. And one of the BEST things is that you very seldom, if at all, use background music. We get to listen to the natural sounds of life on the canal and that’s perfect. Thank you.
Could sit on one of those benches for hours just watching and listening. 💖
What a good life. I always enjoy your videos.
Gosh your videos are so calming thanks
Independence day here in the U.S. A lot of people are out boating today and swimming. Enjoying a day off all their troubles. I went out for a chicken dinner. And now I am on the net researching how to program a laser unit my kids bought me for Father's Day. I caught your vlog and decided to watch it. Happy Cruising my friend.
Oh aye, Happy Independence Day mate, hope you've had a great one 👍🏴
David,
I don't often use the word "hero", but your tale immediately brought it to mind!!!
Doug
Greetings from the USA. I think your vlogs are absolutely fantastic. They are entertaining and informative. I look forward to each new one . Take care and stay safe.
Super, the contrast with the weather on the previous blog is typically British. I think it was a Frenchman who said that Britain does not have a climate, it just has weather. I used to go fly fishing more than I do now and kept a diary - no it is not sad, it is so you know what flies worked, when and where. There was a remarkable trend of good weather in March fishing in smaller lakes but when the main reservoirs opened in early April the weather was distinctly cold - lines freezing in the rod rings. I remember walking to the pub for a pre Xmas lunch pint(s) without a jacket or pullover. In 1974 I finished my final exam at Uni in early June and it snowed in Derbyshire.
Thanks for the step-by-step of going through the lock. I’ve seen you and other boaters do it dozens of times but no one has ever explained it the way you did in this video. Very interesting and educational.
Classic Cruising The Cut!
I so enjoy the beauty of the countryside in your vlogs. Thank you.
Glad to see you 'cruising the cut' again David. Your vlogs are always the highlight of the RUclips week; so relaxing and tranquil although I'm still getting used to the 70mph wide angle lens. Great job.
Ok, I think I'm addicted to CTC! Life in the slow lane...so soothing!
Now that we are in second wave lockdown, your vlogs mean so much more to me. Thanks David👍🇦🇺
The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, otherwise known as the Dog and Sauce?
Are you sure about that speed? Bloody hooligan :-) next you will doing donuts in the winding hole
Damn you for giving me the image of David here wearing some moped-gang-outfit (from the 80's!) and speaking in youth language while going along at the typical narrow boat speed :D ^^
I find donuts are better served with a cup of tea at 4pm.
Nice episode once again. Thank you. picture post card pretty!
He's Back! thank god, something decent on the telly. :)
What lovely memories this brings back for us. Never thought about the challenge of finding juuuuust the right spot to moor under a tree for shade placement.
I always love these videos after a long day at work. Like a breath of fresh air.
Still my all time favourite canal boat vlogger! Great episode again.
Great vlog David, I always find your style so relaxing. Thanks!
Thank you for including the lock shots.
Nice to see you getting out and about. Thanks for sharing your travels.
9:26 "The bench that needs a little friend..." and "sit back and enjoy a happy little cruise...": you definitely could be the Bob Ross of the canals! :)
I massively enjoyed the vlog, just as always. Thanks, David!
Hello David, Greetings from Minnesota USA Thank you for posting love your channel I like to listen with headphones on in order to enjoy the nature sounds! A the best Mike =)
I love your affinity for the wildlife, especially the birds.
Really enjoy watching the trips so relaxing and peaceful
Great greenery, and Shugborough brought back some great memories. Cheers Dave.
Your videos are my weekly ritual. I'm glad you can be out and about and are sharing your adventures.
Always a delight to watch and listen to your commentary and Humorous chat, aren't Narrowboaters always right
Thank you once again for taking us through beautiful English Countryside.
David it’s good to take another cruise with you. And that wide angle lens makes it look like you are speeding. Thanks again 😎😎
7.15 david gets a speeding ticket... or activates warp drive! lol 😂😂😂
great vid! lovely scenery... kind of localish to me... ok, well im in stone! lol
Another well done and much awaited vid. Superb !!!!
Hi David. Thanks for a great vlog as usual. Stay safe 😊👍
Great vlog. always relaxing with a cup of coffee.
There's some quality time. :) I like all the details of checking the solar panels and other stuff that goes into a day of cruising. Very relaxing.
You've done it again, my compliments, thanks for having me aboard, my mind feels like I've been on such a happy cruise it is smiling.
It's a pleasure to see you cruising. i have missed my regular dose of The
Vlog. In my RV I beat that shade problem by having extra panels to use on a longer lead. Park the RV in n ice shade with the panels propped up out in the sun. Likely not the answer for you but may give you an idea. In any case glad to see you back in your element.
Back in England's green and pleasant land once more - beautiful
I love the term lush ! Please include in all future commentaries. Great video as always.
Enjoyed the vlog once again brilliant I bet it's nice cruising again so thankyou and stay safe
Thank you David I always enjoy your vlogs and wait for them each week
Lovely start to my day...............Thank you, Sir...!
Your cruising videos are so therapeutic to watch
These videos are incredible. I’ve watched almost all of them. Thanks David!
34? That is quite warm! We've been having some unseasonably cool weather in my neck of the woods.
Thanks for another beautiful vlog! So calming to watch.
Hey David, as an ex-BBC (radio) hand, seriously considering life afloat. Seriously - your insight into boating has been addictive watching. Never underestimate how entertaining seemingly dull everyday life can be! I'm wondering - and I don't wish to pry - since you began your adventure how is your new lifestyle spiritually and mentally etc? Is it as you expected? Are there things to be wary of? Any advice? Seems that keeping busy with a purpose is a must! Once again - thanks - and keep up the great work!!
PS - I suppose these are semi-rhetorical questions! Maybe a topic for a future blog if you feel it appropriate.
Not really practical to answer such wide-ranging queries in a RUclips comment reply but I’m still enjoying life aboard. It wouldn’t be for everyone though. Glad you enjoy the videos.
As ex BBC External Services, (Monitoring) hand I can thoroughly recommend the life.
You'll never get bored as keeping yourself afloat, maintained, victualled, watered, pumped out, fueled up and just enjoying the life/scenery will fill most days.
The rest of your time can be frittered away at rallys, open days, chandlers and canal side pubs (when fully open).
And if you lack company there's always a dog or cat to consider.
Personally I find sometimes there aren't enough hours in the day.
Or you can make vlogs or with luck be contracted to BBC 4 and make a series on your experiences.
What's not to like and what's keeping you from "just doing it"?
I am not sure if I am the only person that feels this way. But, I watch your your channel and I totally feel like that I could live on a narrowboat, I really enjoy your channel, maybe it’s the way you present it. It seems like an adventure almost. Then I watch and follow several other narrowboat channels and I feel the opposite, and feel like I would never do it, it seems really boring on all of these other channels, maybe it’s they just don’t present it well. Anyway, again you have done a great job here. I have been toying with the idea of purchasing a narrowboat and every time I watch your channel it makes me think I can do it
Haha but what if the other narrowboat channels are right?!
CruisingTheCut wow, never thought of it that way. Good point, maybe you’re just an agent of the CRT or something trying to sell more licenses.
@@CruisingTheCut
I think Mathew Oliver's point (which I happen to agree with, BTW) has validity.
I just found and subbed to your channel in February 2020, lived in America all my life, have absolutely no knowledge of seamanship, and yet you make much of this feel so relaxing and easy. A good quality of both a vlogger and a former news reporter- you know how to craft a story well _and_ sell it so that the difficulties don't seem so difficult! Perhaps that's my ignorance of British culture talking, but even things you disagree with or struggle with don't seem to come across as "bad".
I'm not necessarily encouraging you to make a video showing your trials -at sea- on the canals, but I would be interested to get _a balanced view_ and hear some of your grumbles. (Maybe you already did, and I haven't seen that video yet? I haven't gone that far into your channel library yet.)
Either way, your videos are surprisingly calming and refreshing to me, so please keep making them. Cheers from across the pond! *o/*
The boat is pretty trouble free and you manage to hide complexity, and when you do bring up technology it is in a very well structured easy to understand manner. That might be what sets you apart. Matthew, if that makes sense, don't buy a cheap boat. Look at quality and age and then at the price tag :-)
@@CruisingTheCut Seriously?
Your videos gets better each year. They are a fantastic mix of cruise life, nature, and narrow boat “how to”. And of course you narration and filming are mesmerizing. You’re the best thing on RUclips. I am hooked. Thank you and Cheers. P.s. how about interviewing a “live aboard” in the Netherlands?
Would that liveaboard be you or was that just a general suggestion?
David your new videos really do make my day. I'm still saving up for my boat and hoping to return home to the UK in a year or so, keep putting these out please!
Beauteous! For some reason, I find it very cool that you can pull up in a boat and walk to a store for groceries. Maybe sometime you could show us a trip like that? It's nice that you can visit different towns that way.
One of the neatest non-car travel moments I had was piloting up a sea channel to the head of it where it was truncated by a rail line. We moored up, watched the train pull into the station, our friend hopped off, crossed the tracks, threw us her carpetbag thingy, and climbed aboard. Then we took off for the ocean. It felt very Victorian, lol. Since then I've been intrigued by any place that land meets water.
I finally searched for 'Vespers' and got to listen to it in full, a few times. What a gorgeous piece of music. I miss hearing it on your Amazon program, but I see that a (I assume) family member created new music for you (which is lovely), so I can't blame you for the change.
9:21 you must respect the bench's decision to lead a solitary life my friend
I watched a few narrowboats in Coventry canal ,as a foreign student, and my first impression was "what a weird thing". Now am watching videos and am truly fascinated . A whole new world just opened up in my eyes.
Your previous job experience shows. Very well done, professional video's. When I retire I would very much like to travel around rural England. I have an affinity for old historical places and structures.
I follow this guy since a month or so; he visits old structures like mines, abandoned railways etc. I just recommended that to Dave in vlog #215: ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=martin+zero I think that's a nice channel for you since you like old structures and historical places :)
Another most enjoyable vlog. I was amused when you said that your temperature was 34C. I looked at my weather station and found that my temperature was the same. However it is only noon time so our temperature will be going up to 37 or 38. But unlike you, I have AC to keep the house cool. I will be headed to my sister's house around the corner later for swimming, good food and drink, and of course on this our 4th of July, some fireworks at twilight. I look forward to another one of your vlog. I do enjoy them a lot.
I really enjoyed this video. Amazing how quickly the canal water looks fresher after a few days of rain.
It is so nice to have you back! Enjoying your travels from Thailand. Keep it up, please.🙏
Delightful. Having received a British Canal map generously sent from a Narrowboat and canal group member, I follow along on the map.
I follow along as well using google earth or instantstreet.
Perfect start to Independence Day, a cruise on the cut!
I think most every place there is picture postcard pretty! It seems so peaceful and relaxing. My wife and I would both love to come for a holiday on a narrowboat one day. Actually a couple of weeks would be hopefully enough to hold us for a couple of years. Maybe! You are so lucky to live like this and have these wonderful canals at your fingertips! Stay well and safe!
Thank you David, another wonderful day out in the beautiful country side. Garry
That was a lovely 15 minutes of peace and quiet....thank you....those green leafy sections of the canal are especially cooling to watch ....where I am today it will apparently feel like 42C....I might have to pause it on those leafy bits and just sit and mesmerize for a bit🥵🤣🥵
I love your videos, it reminds me of virtual cruising without the hard work, thanks for all your hard work.
Well someone has to do it. 😁
Crushing the garden of Europe, thank you for taking us along.😉
So happy you are back cruising and producing your witty vlogs. Cheers.
So glad your now cruising David, and we can tag along! We should be exploring the Llangollen and starting our own adventures, but alas lockdown took this away. Have to make do practising with our dog and pony. Canal maybe next year?
Just want to say thanks. I appreciate your videos so very much. Please keep them coming no matter how mundane you think things go. We don't have any canals here in Wisconsin where I live and I enjoy both the visual and your commentary along the way. Take care.
So nice to see you out what you love doing, keep them vlogs coming, find them interesting and calming after a 10 hour shift dodging the COVID-19 virus as being a key worker, stay safe yourself.
another great video - I could watch this all day
Your camera picks up the bird song beautifully. 😀
superb pictures as usual, lovely soundtrack of rustling leaves, passing putt-putts and the quietest canada geese ever.
A little confusing at 10:18.. the bow's Dark Side of the Moon preceeded the Comfortably Numb stern by 6 years.... a long boat indeed!
