After staying in Atherstone due to a week of non-stop rain, I finally had a nice day when I felt like moving on, and took the opportunity to descend the eleven-lock flight.

Emergency summer coal - love England.
Though England faces alot of criticism from the world. I feel this is one of the best and most beautiful country of the world. Given the earth gems in every field of life. I love England alot. Love from India sir. Your country is heaven on earth.
Having started at number 1 and now reached number 181, I can say that I have enjoyed almost all of them, but this was one of the best of all. Such a lot put into just quarter of an hour, yet so soothing and relaxing. Don't start thinking of changing ANYTHING!
This channel, the photography and the commentary are compulsively relaxing.
There is positivity nothing we love better than seeing all the details of operating the locks. So reminds us of our magical day with you last fall. And anyone who gets so excited about ice cream is no idiot. 😉
A favourite tradition of mine...sitting in a quiet classroom after my 4th and 5th graders are gone and marking their reading journals whilst I quietly watch an episode of cruising the cut. Well done David!
i am not sure which is more fun - the commentary by you or the scenic beauty of the place. i suspect it is the happy marriage of both - time and time again. Thank you David
An unbothered fisherman which proves that fishing can sooth the soul.
Another great video.. after a couple of years watching your videos I have now bought a 57' narrowboat and started cruising the cut full-time .. what a great way of life .. many thanks for the inspiration.
Fantastic. Hope you’re having a great time on it. Cheers
That was beautify filmed and well written , one of your best yet and I enjoyed the camera from the rear of the boat.
From the land of manners..."Because I'm British and we like queuing." Brilliant!
I'm an idiot too! Welcome to the group. Love the bumble bees!
You definitely earned that Magnum ice cream! People seem so much friendlier and helpful on the cut. Thank you for a completely lovely way to spend 17 minutes.
Had a truly horrible day today, bought a piece of English cheesecake on the way home to cheer me up, and lo and behold, an episode of CtC awaits. I felt better already even before pressing the play button! Thanks ever so much for cheering me up today, as always!
Horrible days are awful! Glad to have helped :-)
I notice that after all of these years you no longer look at a large flight of locks with the same trepidation as you did in the beginning. You’ve become an old canal sailor now.
That looks like an amazing life...as an American I'm seriously jealous! Much love & respect from the USA!
I know! I want to live on a canalboat and live amongst that incredible nature. I'm especially fond of cows grazing :)
Thank you for not playing music so I can focus on what you are saying. I enjoy the pur of the motor, the birds, and water splashing the boat. These sounds make it seem as though I am almost there . . . a part of the journey.
After a long day I love popping you on the telly and sipping some tea. You have such a calming demeanor. Cheers from Vermont, USA
This is how I’ve been able to get myself to sleep the last few days. What with the virus on top of the regular stress of day to day life, if I didn’t have your videos to distract and comfort me I suspect I’d be a bit of a wreck. Thank you so much and keep up the excellent work.
Hardly high praise.
“Passing wind” 😂 love it!
Love the birds having drink - very cute!
I'm going up the Atherstone locks tomorrow.. currently moored up between 9 and 10... so checking all the vlogs for intel. As a solo boater too I'm jealous that you are spritely enough to jump from gate to gate but one day your luck might just run out!
To me an amusing realization: narrow boating = right hand driving. Car driving = left hand driving. You English are an interesting bunch! As always, a great video and commentaries. I am thoroughly fascinating by narrow boating. The landscape is beautiful and the locks are fun to watch. This seems like a great way to live. Greetings from across the Atlantic. :-)
New to youR channel, having just found it. I live in Vermont, no chance for canals in the mountains. My mothers kin are from England, and there lies my heart. I love narrow boats, and all you see from them.
Thanks to you a narrow boat vacation has made it onto my bucket list.
I've always wanted to visit the U.K. but I'm not really interested in the cities, I much prefer the country side as well as the little bits of history one picks up along the way!
In any event, another good video, thank you!
That leaky water tap sure made the sparrows happy. One looked like he was taking a shower! lol
Solo Locking can be quite time consuming & quite hard work can’t it? Great when the Lockies help. Every Captain needs a scurvy ridden crewman to labour!! 😇
Yarrrr
In my days as a plasterer in the 70's/80's when Water-Points were scarce and electricity and toilets on sites were rarer than hen's teeth, I used to have my own Hydrant which I'd connect to the nearest point, (because hydrant points had to go in with Services before sites could start) and the pressure was sublime!! a 45 gallon drum took about three minutes maximum.
Not too sure how 'legal' it was - But! - OH Well ;-)
Something to put in your thinking cap #YoungDave?? .......
I am trying to figure out why your videos are so addictive. All I come up with is you have figured out a great mix of what people need to relax. you're skilled with video, You're skilled with journalism and you have a great topic.
PS
I personally would not mind more videos of those little birds drinking the driping water or the flowers or butterflies. But take my advice cautiously because whatever you're doing is working to relax thousands of people.
I wish I could show more of the birds etc but it all comes down to pure luck in terms of them being there to film and not flying off by the time I've got the camera on them. Real wildlife videographers will spend months trying to get one shot, I have only seconds!! :-)
@@CruisingTheCut I do appreciate what you have been able to film . I think you did a good job. 🙂
Thank you for your work in filming and presenting these vlogs. They are so addictive!
Thank you
"Remember I'm an idiot, there's no reason for you to be" Brilliant comment, sounds like my attitude. I see you as a modern water gypsy, in the best sense of the word.
I only "know" about narrow boating vicariously via your vlogs. That looks like a lot of work but you make it look , well not exactly easy but not quite so daunting. I just love it when you have posted a new vlog. The quality is much appreciated thank you David.
I always enjoy riding along with you.
Man I love your videos. Whenever my anxiety is flaring, watching a few of them puts me into a very happy place. I love the way those lumbering hunks of steel gently bob along.
I’ve only got 3 you tube vlogs, yours, the happy ladies and art and bri in America. Look forward each week to watching you all. Everyone better than the tele 😂
One of the best lock “instructive “ vlogs. But a lot of people need reminding why we close all the gates and paddles.
I liked that you filmed the birds drinking the water from the leaking spigot. Another great vlog!
I was really pleased when I spotted them :-)
I like to see all the little things along the way like water points etc.
At first I thought that my interest in off grid houses and now also narrowboats, were to get away and be disconnected from the world but I have come to the realisation that is about freedom to choose and more importantly, having tasks off work that I need to do to keep my brains occupied with things that aren’t watching depressing news that I have no chance of doing anything about.
Well said Martin.
I find it way satisfying watching this kind of videos
with as much cheese as you seem to consume in sandwiches you really need a dog named grommet for company :-)
strangely calming to watch 17 mins of lock passage. Thanks!
How very interesting David I had often wondered how multiple boats go up and down, very civilised and very cleverly designed.
Thanks for the close up shots at 2:42 and 10:02 !! : ))) Love your ability to notice and capture tiny
moments of great beauty!
Good evening, nice video, very physical trip, a lot of traffic on the canal, it already feels the holidays
And getting busier every day...
I think most people just enjoy helping with the locks.
Thank you for your time.
Lot of work to get through 11 locks. Appreciate your short notes, very funny, including 'Don't do this, I am an idiot'. I regularly jaywalk.
As a local it was lovely to see part of the area I love so much and remember those lovely warmer months, thank you.
Nice to see my mate Steve giving you a hand at top lock. Its a nice flight , no turbulence , well maintained and pleasant surroundings
I really enjoy watching the fine country go by on your vlog. Always wondered if and how the locals use the canals, so your scene with the fisherman was enlightening.
"... or I'd give it a bit of Wellie." Love that English terminology
Love the vlog! Informative, scenic and well done. Thx for sharing.
lovely! edit: the detailed demonstration of lock operation is fascinating. (:
Good fun to watch this video. I lived in England for three years (85, 86, 87) but had other interests. During a return visit to England in May 2019 I viewed my first narrowboats along the Oxford Canal at Upper Heyford. Thanks for posting these videos.
Well after watching several of your videos and your numerous references to cheese sandwiches 🥪 I actually tried one. It was surprisingly good 😋 👍🏾👍🏾. Well done Captain.
David, I have a new revenue stream for you. A book. Just a small one. "99 Ways to make a cheese sandwich" :)
But I only know one way!
Really enjoy your videos. We auto drivers use rear view mirrors & rear facing camers. Have you thought of doing similar, just on the front of your vessel? You would have gotten a preview of what was around the bend as you approached the water spot. Just a thought. Have fun & stay well.
Very educational for me - Thanks. Seeing all the procedures and courtesies shared was great.
You're a magician as well as everything else - Bow rope mysteriously swapped sides and back again while the boat descended
Well done on capturing on video boaters greetings one another!
A boat named passing wind now that gave me a bit of a chuckle
I am here and living for the wholesome boat content
Thank you for another lovely vlog, your commentary and video are just so relaxing to watch. I’m always looking forward to the next one x
What a dream run! We were in UK during all that rain. We spent a bit of time at the Braunston Pub, but failed to see any boats we knew. The day we left back to Australia it fined up!!
the other boater greeting. he was rather stoic
We filled up at Atherstone couple of months back. Lockie was great, they feed the birds every morning you know, but yes the water was a dribble. Jolly good Fish & Chips in town & an Aldi.
I agree with you on windchimes they turn a peaceful day into an annoying day
Being able to queue without problems is proof of good social behavior. You Brits know how to do it, like us Swedes. I can add that it is the same weather in Sweden. :)
Always enjoyable. Thank you once again.
You've just made my Friday evening, a glass of chilled white wine, sitting in the shade on glorious sunny day, and watching your latest video! Many thanks!
I’ve never been on a canal but since I have started watching you vlogs, I’m totally hooked and looking forward to giving it a go. You are a true inspiration and I love your dry humour and your explanations of each and every operation and site you have been through. Thank you for all of this
Thank you so much!
I always enjoy helping other boaters through the locks, I appreciate it if someone helps me. While the lock is filling/emptying there is time for a chat. Great vlog as usual.
I always respect a person who understands his safety/intelligence level.
Wonderful video as always. Thank You and Cheers.
Loved this vlog.
Thank you.
Nice one!! A pleasure to watch!!
Just utterly lovely. Thanks. :)
Another wonderful video and interesting to see the volunteers of the canal.
My favorite site. Thank you!
I'm surprised no one has commented about your "hive of activity" groaner, so I guess I shall have to do so. I hope you came away from that close observation without a stinging reprimand.
And while I'm bitching I might as well mention that now after watching the show I see why you should not ride bicycles on the canals they simply were not designed for that. Also they were not designed for fishing. and even more importantly they were not designed to be a walking path. I hope this eventually turns into a major legal issue. That the canals have ultimate right of way it's maritime law. The boaters who pay the license fees in the CRT who control the canals have the ultimate authority to keep people off those paths. This is still an active commissioned Maritime corridor.
Great video, always enjoy seeing how the locks work! Thanks
Fantastic video, well done. Thanks for sharing .
I really enjoy your videos, beautiful to see the landscape from another point of view and I'm looking forward to the next one. I wish you a happy X-mas.
Wind chimes, do what I do, just tie them in a big knot and it looks like the wind did it
This is what I like watching
Loved it,well done.thanks😁👍👏👏👏
Love the 'do what I say and not what I do' with jumping across the long gates, I do it myself, although I like to think it is more of a large step than a leap or jump 😇
Interesting viewing again, thank you
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Awsome videos as always👍🏼🤗
That was a fascinating insight into how the locks work. Lovely video. Have a great weekend ahead.
As always, very entertaining. What a wonderful way to live.
nice to hear the procedure for going through the locks - pretty cool
sure is pretty and clean country side you boat through
I have a 10 foot bamboo handle fitted to a 1/2" net wire mesh basket I fish out an concessional soda pop bottle I find floating - kind of makes up for my foolishness as a younger man
A great watch David.. Thanks for sharing
Great Vlog David.....Thank You Again!!
Very much enjoying your craft. The channel continues to be a favorite. Thank you David!
Brilliant vlog, loved watching it, thank you for posting.
beautiful scenery - 'and God bless those Lockies!
Very lovely David.
Thanks,
Chris from Missouri
Nice Friday afternoon video. Thank you David. Hope you enjoyed your cheese sandwich and Magnum ice cream bar. Aren't modern appliances wonderful? Take care and safe travels.
Gosh an angler! :-) As most anglers tend to fish 'the far bank' where they have 'baited up' they don't normally mind if your nearer to their seated position as it disturbs the bottom over which they are fishing less. (if that makes sense). I'm an angler who loves the canals, the boats and what they stand for. But I rarely fish the cuts, just a stretch near where I live (The Wyrley & Essington around Pelsall, Walsall. It has very little boat activity. Sadly not all anglers are so forgiving of boats/boaters :-(
