Oh man! your cons about the battery is the reason why I am buying this over the Rode NTG. You see rechargeable via usb is what makes the Rode mic a disposable mic. When the battery have reach its shelf life it's done. This one will last you for years unless it breaks.
Thank you for making this video 😭 I was plugging the cable into the headphone jack instead of the front one and the audio sounded TERRIBLE. I thought about returning it until I found this video and re-tested the mike.
I recently got the MKE 400 and I have trouble recording the sound properly. It sounds much more quiet on the recording than on the live-test with the headphones plugged in. When I was checking the sound before recording I was surprised how much it picks up and I loved it right away. Once I heard the recording though I was disapointed. I use a Zoom F2 field recorder and I already switched from 48 down to 44.1 kHz which is "louder" and more crisp. But it´s still relativly quiet compared to the live audio with the plugged in headphones. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
1st of all great review i enjoyed it … I’m just a bit curious about something… when ever you used the MKE 400 did you have the low cut filter on because it sounds less bottom heavy than the MKE 200 in your comparison…
Have you tried the mic when the camera is powered by the mains instead of a battery? I did and it picks up a very loud humming noise. I dont have such a problem with my Rode Video pro mic or 15 year old Sennheiser mke400mk1 (still my goto mic). Happens on two Panasonic Lumix cameras S5 & FZ2000. Does anyone else have this issue?
thanks for a great video...im kinda lost is the MKE 400 and MKE 400 II the exact same shape? or different since the mobile kit only says MKE 400 on the box....
Yeah, so there is an older version, but if you get the one like what you see in my review that's the lastest edition. I think it's not really referred to as the second edition on most websites. I have a link in the description if that helps!
Yups, buying the mke 200.. sound is good enough and no battery to replace. Going to be a stationary setup at my mother in law.. foolproof is a must 😂 For myself I want the md 441u... Saving has started 😂
Great video. Question about a couple problems: First, the recorded volume at 0db is kinda low and I have to at least double the volume in post. Second, I've had the mic record super low, barely audible audio on occasion for no reason I could figure out. Both times, shooting with my iPhone using the supplied cable and a headphone to lightning converter. Any thoughts on either of these issues?
I haven't experienced these problems and I'm wondering if it's possible that it's the adapter? Is it an Apple adapter or an aftermarket one? I'm not sure if that would make a difference, but I hope you find a resolution!
@@AndrewKnepper Yes, it can make a difference in my experience. I once bought a 24bit ADC (for $30) that had a worse level than a 16bit 3.5-to-USB ($20). Go figure!
Hey Andrew, great review. Thanks 👍 What gain mode do you usually use the mic at? 0dB or +20dB? (Obviously not -20dB cos that's too quiet.) Just wondering because I want to get the best sound out of the mic and into my R6 MKII.
I'm trying to use the MKE 400 as an external mic for a Zoom meeting. I'm not seeing it as an option in Zoom's audio menu. Do I select USB-c? When I do that, there is total silence.
Sorry I wish I knew the answer... I've only used it on a camera and my phone so I'm not entirely sure how it could pair up to a computer. Hopefully Google can help you out!
A year later: I bought the MKE 400 recently because it is more compact than the others in its class. Out of the box, I was not impressed by the plastic switches and the output peaking just under -12 db for voice; there's no fine adjustment, so you're stuck with that, a jarring +20, or a barely audible -10. The auto-on/off doesn't work on my GH6 unless I use the setting sending power to the mic. The point of a powered mic is NOT to send power from the camera. The mic puts out self-noise at a just barely acceptable level on the normal setting and unacceptable at the +20 setting. The sound quality is kind of muffled, too, lacking sibilance. Listening to your audio, I have to wonder if I got a bum unit! It sounds like you EQ'd or compressed or adjusted the volume in post or something.

Yeah that's a great comparison! I think you'll be happy with your decision!
I would love to be able to power it directly from USB as well as the AAA battery option
Great video!! Thanks for helping me decide to get the MKE 400!!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
thanks, i subscribed trying to get you to 1000 subs bro... love the microphone
Thanks for subscribing!

Glad this helped you out!
Thanks for the review!
I found it very helpful, I definitely want to buy this microphone in the future now!

Good review! I appreciate the comparison test.
Thank you so much!

Thanks for the comparison with MKE 200.
Yeah absolutely 👍

I believe I did... It's been a while since I made this review, but I'm pretty sure you are correct!

I haven't had any humming issues with the Sennheiser MKE 400, but I'll let you know if I run into any issues!

I use the 0dB 99% of the time. The other ones are handy to have, but I definitely don't use them much.
Looking at this same mic and have the same camera as you. Did you get the mic, if so how's it going so far?
Good review buddy. Buying it now.
Awesome thanks for watching!

What about a untreated room with traffic noise ?
Well it's a shotgun mic so as long as it's pointed right at you you'll get decent audio!
Great vid!
Thanks you!
Mke 200 or Mke400 which one good as on camera mic for sync with the external recording mic ?
Do you mean as a backup mic just to sync up with an external mic? If so I'd go with the MKE 200.
Hi Andrew, does 200 and 400 pick up voice while using it back? Thanks
Both of these mics only pick-up noise from the front only like a traditional shotgun microphone.
@@AndrewKnepper Oh I see. Thank you ..
Am I crazy or you didn't even talk about the gain/low cut filter...?
