      I’ve had many come up to me and say I thought you had a stick shift, I say I do. They would argue until I show them a stock Ford shifter on a top loader. The clutch set up and shift linkage is the most critical things to get right. I didn’t do any trick stuff to blocking rings or anything but have broken a few shift handles off on the 2-3 shift. If I had a trans like this I could do it with less effort as I’m almost 70 years old but can still shift with the best of them.

      @@joshuagarvey9362 Never has more truer words been spoken! These transmissions are bulletproof from the factory! The M20 and M21 was designed for general applications but the M22 was built for the dawn of the big block era. Hard torque is what these gems love! Just a descendant of the Borg-Warner T-10 and they built them to perform and last.

    In the 60s and 70s our top loaders we would grind off every other synchro tooth on the first second and third synchros,, it allowed more chances to go into gear quicker... 18:25

    • @mikehoncho5389
      @mikehoncho5389 4 месяца назад

      Why would you grind them off the first gear synchro?

  • @ZeroBoostBuick
    @ZeroBoostBuick 5 месяцев назад +3

    I saw a little undercut on the dogs... interesting undercut because it's not like the oldschool straight undercut but somewhat of a V or U type of undercut.
    I undercut quite a few motorcycle dogs, with a dremel... takes forever because you have to match the undercut inside the slot it goes into as well, wich is not like your transmission where it's a dog hitting another dog and easy to see if the undercut is mating 100 % and all dogs and slots mate at the same time the same amount or you will sheer the dog right away on the first pull.
    I had no choice but to undercut them because new gears were not available, but at the same time it made the transmission NEVER slip out of gear, which was the problem in the first place.
    Manual transmissions are SO simple compared to Automatic transmissions.

    helical is the name you were tryin to remember for the gears the factory used.... one of the biggest benefits is noise and vibration.... trade off is they try to shove each other away when torque is applied.....
    the dog gear engagement has been industry standard in motorcycles for decades.... i been a dealer level tech for years and cant remember ever seeing a bike with synchronizers.....
    synchronizer function is in the name.... they help the next gear get spun up to same speed as the last gear ..... straight cut gears take less effort to engage.....

      It'd be worth it for Liberty if they could come up with a version of their transmission that could also do downshifts for the drag n drive faithful. So they can run a higher diff ratio and have lower 1st and 2nd gear so as not to need an overdrive unit, which would be a welcome saving of weight. Lenco said they were coming out with a downshifting version of their box, but so far I havent seen anything concrete.

    Syncros are nothing but shift-lever actuated brakes to de-accelerate the speed of the clutch-disc or discs, the input shaft, the counter-gear shaft, and all the gears engaged with it, (including the over-drive gear) to match the speed of the locking rings engaged with the output shaft so that the desired gear and a locking ring can be more easily engaged. I describe it as it's harder to get it out of gear than it is to get it into gear, mostly the 1/2 shift. when torque is being applied it's really hard to get it out but when you push it towards a gear, It literally gets sucked in. getting it in gear is never the issue.

    The only real advantage an automatic has is the torque converter multiplies the torque off the line where the manual just slips the clutch usually the torque multiplication in the automatic only applies at the launch but two cars with equal power and weight but one being a manual and one automatic the auto will leave faster if you can take out all the other human variables ect.. I still like manual transmissions because any old back yard mechanic can change a clutch cheaply and easier than trying to overhaul a automatic one which requires a lot more knowledge and skills and tools to do and also the manual if you don't abuse it will nearly last forever besides the regular clutch changes. As far as just regular street driving I prefer to have a manual also as long as you don't live in a city with lots of traffic then that clutch becomes a pain in the keister.The fluid in the torque converter gets flung outward at the hit and redirected back onto itself actually increasing the power output of the car for free in a flywheel on a manual that free energy is locked inside the material of the flywheel and you cannot get it out this is the physics of why the automatic has an advantage over a manual.

    Hey, Could you possibly explain your clutch setup in a little more detail?..curious if it's an 11", if you use a clutch tamer or a slipper style and adjust the weights or a multiple disc..

    • @frizzellracing
      @frizzellracing  5 месяцев назад +2

      Funny thing is I did a whole video on my clutch setup and never published it because I thought it would bore people to tears. 😂
      I would be happy to do one. But my current setup is a ram clutch, slipper style and I do run counter weights.

    • @MEC1955
      @MEC1955 5 месяцев назад +1

      I would like to see a good video on the slipper style of clutch, how it functions, flywheel weight, steel or aluminum, composition of disc and how you adjust the weights..I assume you have a Browell style of bellhousing with access plate..to me It's a whole science getting a clutch car off the line without destroying the transmission, driveshaft or Ring& pinion, PLUS if you occasionally drive it on the street what is changed or is it as far as settings?

    Rival the gear change speed of an automatic, yes, but you're forgetting the more important reason that everyone chooses an automatic in drag racing besides massively higher torque capacity.. The torque multiplication of a torque converter!! And before someone says that auto transmission cars are boring.. If your car is boring with a properly selected converter and a transbrake, it's time to find yourself a new engine builder!
