    I'm impressed that dewalt uses the newer style samsung cells here. Milwaukee is still using almost 10 years old technology in their M12 line. I built some m12 packs with these S20 cells and they rip hard!

      .15 nickel strips. They work great with the spot welder. I will double them up at times if needed. Installing one at a time of course.

    Great fan and electronics hobbyist myself. Really wish you would make a video covering your "take" on replacing 18650 cells in the Ryobi 40v batteries. I've seen your 40v diagnostic videos. I recognize your dislike for this platform. But I have over 20 40v batteries used for both many ryobi tools including now their auger and cordless pressure washer AND diy household projects. All batteries charged thru solar mppt. So I have a vested interest charging.

      Thanks for your comment.
      I have replaced cells in a few of these 40V packs for sure. I have had so many other issues keeping the packs up as well as you seen in that video on the 40V. I do understand your situation here and in your case I surely would try replacing cells on some of them. It's usually worth it, but it is a difficult pack to re cell. Alot of desoldering to remove the BMS board and then separate the halves.

      @@ThriftyToolShed That's for sure. Yes those three bad batteries came from ebay as good. I was able to receive a full refund for each for my inconvenience and keep each battery. Guess I will attempt a repair. Nothing really to loose unless like you say to many bad cells won't make it possible.

      I ve been also pondering ways to reconfigure these 40v packs to 12v and use them in my shop to run bench tools off of 12v inverters. Each could be solar charged and lots of aftermarket adaptors available for all types of batteries including ryobi 40v. I have purchased these for my m12 batteries too. Lots of project potential. Aftermarket bms circuitry would be needed as well. Just my thoughts. Thanks

    awesome video. encouraged me to try and repair one of my 54v batteries (Australian equivalent of a 60v). However, my battery does now charge and works great with an 18v tool, but it does not work in the 54v tools and when the cells are isolated for the use of 54v, I get no battery reading. I wonder if I have another dead cell, or if I fried something on the bms board. I also checked the cells in the cluster in which the fuel gauge reads from and it seemed okay but when checking the total voltage on top it was lower. the new cell I installed hasn't equalised in its cluster either. but when in parallel all three clusters read 19v. Any ideas?

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  2 года назад

      Almost seems as though the contacts are not making for the 60V position if not showing voltage with it pressed in and the jumper in place. It could be an open cell or cell connection causing this as well since all the cells are in series when you show no voltage. That could explain why some are not equalizing while in series or 20V mode.

      @@ThriftyToolShed awesome. I’ll have to disconnect a few more cells and check their voltage again. I just noticed a cell reads a really low voltage when isolated but the normal 3.7v when parallel? I’m wondering if that’s voltage from the rest of the pack which allows just enough to run the 18v tool but in sequence it’s too low to run the 54v tool and show on the battery bar?

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  2 года назад +1

      @@maxharris7311
      Yes, in series all cells have to be in great shape to work correctly and in parallel you could be working with only 2 or even 1 good set to give 20V out. Not good for the pack to run that way, but it may still work for a while. Best of luck to ya!

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  3 месяца назад

      I did use Neodymium magnets from Amazon. I used high quality flux and was really quick with the soldering since it will diminish the magnets strength the longer the heat is applied. I will also try conductive epoxy next time to see which works best.

      It works ok, I did that for a while until I kept pulling it apart when I would go to remove it sometimes. Then I started looking into a permanent fix. I also have some magnets on the list to buy with Tapered hole to add a small screw and will try that soon.

      There is no way to give you any real answer from the information given. If you replace cells make sure they are all balanced and make sure the wires going to the fuel gauge are connected well and of course check the voltage across the cells going to the fuel gauge. If all balanced and still no signs of working while on charger or while used in a tool then the board itself will have to be checked out.

    • @ThriftyToolShed

      I have done that with small clips from my Power Supply. I use a Constant Voltage and Constant Current Power supply. Set at no more than .5 to 1A and no more than 4volts. Observe polarity of course and monitor the cell to make sure it's not getting hot and make sure it will increase in voltage while being charged. If it does slowly go up then it may be time to remove leads and make sure it doesn't start self discharging because it's most likely a bad cell to be that unbalanced anyway. Most likely if a pack gets that bad out of balance the capacity of some of the cells have simply gotten off too far to continue being useful together. I do share more about Lithium testing in the video "Lithium Battery FAQ#1"

      Most of those buttons have a small metal disc pushing the button contact and about the only way to fix it is usually taking it apart and finding another tiny spring disc. Or replacing the board with another. Other than taking a small needle and penetrating the disc in between the disc and contact point to try to pop it up? It's a long shot, I don't know any other way myself.

    You should look into the Weller D550PK solder gun. I found one on ebay used , good shape. Have used it for battery assembly, allows me to get on fast and off fast. Just a thought, if you have the pack torn down like yours, I would replace all batteries as ounce of prevention. Thanks for the look, good work!

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  3 года назад

      I will have to check on the Weller. My whole point and mentioned in the video is the whole 15 cell replacement is not cost effective as it would be about the same cost of a new pack, but yes as many other videos I have, when we already have replacement cells from other recycled packs etc. then absolutely! Agreed!

    Hello brother. Dewalt 60 volt battery. It is in good condition, but when I use it on a saw, it works for a few seconds and disconnects the electricity. What is the reason? If you can help me. Thank you❤

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  Год назад

      It could be that one of the cells has issues. If the pack does sense a cell low it will shut down the tool. I believe it does this through the ID pin. It seems to compare the cells and disconnects that pin when an issue is detected. I have seen once when the board was bad and so it was causing this. Usually it is the cells.
