    Thanks Scotty I appreciate it. I love doing my own brake work, for that very reason. My nephew took his Smart Car in for an oil change once. He was in school at the time and after the change drove it home and I think he checked the oil and was low. We noticed it was leaking from the drain bolt. Took it back and come to find out the drain bolt stripped. Needed a new oil pan. Well that little oil change wound up costing my brother $800+!!! Another reason I like doing my own work. My first car was a ‘72 Ford Pinto! Well, Dad made me do all the work on it! So I learned just about everything on that car my Dad paid $500 for! I did the radiator, water pump, thermostat, head, head gasket, starter, tune ups, oil changes, air filters, shocks, camshaft, fan belt, brakes went out on a hill, coasted to a parking lot, with just the emergency brake, drums in the back and disc in front, tires from time to time!!! By the time I gave it to my brother it was a brand new ‘72 Ford Pinto!!! Never got around to the band adjustment, as suggested by Dad. The hardest was that starter…😂

      I had to take my car back to a big-name shop several months after an oil change; in bitter cold weather there was a several-drop leak from the area of the oil filter when warming up. Shop had to snug up the filter for me. 2nd time in three vehicles I had a filter come loose enough to cause a minor leak. I guess everybody's "hand tighten and then a little more" is different.

    I always check after any mechanics work on my car and find problems where they left something loose or left off, it's common. Even a Toyota dealer who replaced my rav4 waterpump didn't recheck coolant level after test driving and I popped the hood and checked and it was way below minimal. Some are lazy, complacent or do things on purpose especially if they don't like foreign vehicles, it's a western thing.

      Mechanics didn't replace my brake fluid reservoir cap, thankfully it was trapped under the bonnet/hood so I didn't lose it entirely. They also fitted brake pad hardware the wrong way around, cracked my engine air filter box by over tightening screws and lost small plastic clips for my battery cover. Little things like this are annoying and may cause problems later. I'm not a mechanic but do some maintenance jobs and take care of my car so I notice some of these things that another person might miss. Skilled and conscientious mechanics like Scotty are worth their weight in gold.

    Over a couple of years we hired two different SUV type vehicles to go away to the mountains west of Sydney Australia. The first was a Subaru Forester 2.5 AWD which I found fantastic to drive and excellent in off-road situations. But, the thing absolutely guzzled fuel at highway speeds. But it was super comfortable to drive and a lot of fun. The following year we took a 2015 Toyota RAV 4 which could not have been a more different vehicle to the Subaru in almost every way. It was nowhere near as comfortable or good on the road as the Subaru but, it returned fantastic fuel economy, some 20-30% better in fact. I didn’t find the RAV 4 anywhere near as pleasant to drive over long distances though, the suspension was harsh and the steering wheel seemed offset to the driver!

      It is probably someone new who does not do the job with a protocol or it was done in a dirty garage where they have trouble keeping track of things. When I did my first brake job on my car, I watched the video on how to do it, then wrote a protocol on how the process is done. With the protocol, I checked everything off as I did ech step so that I did not forget anything. It pays to be careful.

    Scotty is the Toyota Whisperer!
    About a year ago, the local auto parts store battery (a replacement for a previously faulty battery from the same store) was acting quite odd and could not hold a charge for more than a few days. The battery was "tested" more than a few times at the store and over and over again they said it was good. There were all sorts of strange things going on with the vehicle and thinking that the battery was okay, I tried to track down if there was some kind of intermittent short. Couldn't find any obvious faults and finally took the battery to a different store and sure enough, the battery was bad. Don't be too quick to trust those battery testers at your local auto parts place. The quality of some batteries seem to have got pretty poor over the past few years.

      @markh.6687 11 месяцев назад

      The problem is some battery testers are only measuring voltage, and do not load test with an amperage load. I saw this with my own battery once; a battery analyzer showed my new battery to be way low on amperage. Ran it to the chain parts store I bought it from; guy says "oh, it's fine." on his little tester. Then I showed him the analyzer printout from the shop my car was in. I left with a new battery minutes later, so the shop could deal with the other issue.

    The Toyota dealership that ‘was’doing the fluid changes on my Toyota RAV4, 2009 was not checking the transmission fluid. Allegedly, the transmission fluid is good for the life of the transmission and never needs to be changed. If you don’t change the transmission fluid, how long do you think the transmission will last???

      I’m not scotty, but fyi, he does have a video out there for jump starts. I believe he stated if you have a newer style jump start with all the bells and whistles. They have electric protection built in and you go to straight to the negative terminal. You can even hook them up wrong and the machine will tell you. So I purchased one and I love it.

    Challenge to Scotty: investigate the MYSTERY, phantom RAV4 "Low Brake pedal" after even simple brake pad replacement. The hydraulic system is never opened up, yet... the brake pedal is suddenly 1/2 height. Toyota DIY mechanics report this issue on forums, scratching their heads, cuz it makes no sense. It is a common problem, and users are at a loss as to the fix. I've bled my Rav's brakes dozens of times, and replace everything in the system. No luck, the brake pedal never recovers to full height.
