    There was a bloke at Boeing Everett who was known as the ‘winglet man”-his job was to gently hammer (press fit?) winglets into the -400’s wing tips… Sad that the QANTAS Rolls Royce 747-438 fleet is now long gone. OJC likely flew on from LAX to Victorville for scrapping… she deserved a water cannon salute-great airplanes.

    How did the plane lose it's winglet ?

    • @luxman13w
      @luxman13w  9 лет назад

      It didn't lose it, but donated it to another aircraft that damaged its winglet.

    does anyone know for sure when Qantas is getting rid of its 747s?
    I had always wanted a ride on a 47 and so took the plunge last November and went to Australia, arriving in Brisbane on Hamilton Island and departing Sydney on Wunala.
    Now I want to have (at least?) one more ride before Qantas gets ride of theirs (I checked and United only uses 87s or 77s; not acceptable! lol) and am hoping someone knows with any degree of certainty when my last chance might be.
    I am leaning towards going back in November again, hoping to beat their deadline....
    If anyone can help, I will appreciate it.
    Thanks :-)

      2112Zil, you will get the chance to fly on a 747 in November. The RR 747's will go within the next couple of years, but the ER's will be around for a few more years.

      luxman13w Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I sent Qantas the same type of question a few weeks ago and the reply was that they couldn't say with any certainty and any decisions would be based upon business requirements. Fair enough.
      It is so sad that the most gorgeous and iconic passenger jet is being phased out in favor of the Welfare Green-Pepper Burger 380. During an unexpected delay of our departure from LA, I struck up a conversation with a member of the cabin crew and she loves the 747s; they are her favorite, too. I could tell immediately she was very wise and has great taste, lol.
      What is your opinion of the 747-8? I saw a youtube documentary (747 megafactories) about it, with rave reviews from the test pilots and many mentions of its increased fuel economy (I believe they said 15% better than the 380). Unfortunately, according to other articles I have read, not many orders have been placed for the passenger version, though the freight version is expected to continue to rein supreme in that realm.
      I hope that the passenger version lives up to its claims and that in fact it replaces present 747s.....
      Thanks again for the quick response. :-)

      2112Zil As much as I love the 747, the 748 won't be anywhere near as successful as its predecessor. Orders for passenger variants are way down, and Boeing are lucky to be putting out one a month.
      Cathay Pacific have flagged that their future in passenger aircraft will be twin-engine, even though they have the 748 as freighters. With the cost of fuel, and passenger loads on 777's not being much less than a 747, it does make sense to have a twin-engine aeroplane that can operate at a much lower cost and just as reliably as a 747.
      The 777 has proven to be a world beater in its performance, range and payload, considering Air Canada fly them daily from Vancouver to Sydney, as does Emirates from Dubai, British from London, Delta from LA and the list goes on.

    When you fly this airline insure your baggage with a private company - take spare clothes in your hand baggage - enjoy the old " she 'l be right mate" attitude.

    HOW IS IT ALLOWED TO FLY WITH ONE WINGTIP MISSING AND THE TIP OF THE RIGHT WING IN THAT CONDITION?

    • @luxman13w
      @luxman13w  3 года назад +1

      It's allowed to fly as Boeing says the aircraft is allowed to fly, as it doesn't overly affect flying performance other than increased fuel usage. Aircraft are allowed to fly with some parts unserviceable, as the manufacturer deems allowable.

    City of Melbourne is the planes name?Then why do i see the name Longreach on this plane?

    • @luxman13w
      @luxman13w  8 лет назад

      Longreach was the name given to the 747-400 series aircraft by QANTAS for two reasons
      1. Their extended range to be able to fly to the US non-stop.
      2. Named after the town of Longreach in Queensland where it all began for QANTAS.

    • @TheChampcol
      @TheChampcol 7 лет назад

      Longreach is where QANTAS was first based in Queensland.

    It's a bit sad to see OJC leave. I never flew on it but I flew on OJM from JFK-LAX-SYD at the beginning of July 2012. Do you know when OJM is heading for Victorville? Also OJA which flew LHR-SYD non stop back in 1989.

    • @luxman13w
      @luxman13w  10 лет назад +1

      patmck2, can't say when OJM (Gosford) will depart our shores for the last time, but it doesn't appear to be in the foreseeable future (next couple of years anyway, but that can change at the drop of a hat).

    • @patmck2
      @patmck2 10 лет назад

      luxman13w I noticed that OJA hasn't been flying for the past few days and just before that it had technical issues at NRT then went back to SYD then flew SYD to JNB and then back to SYD and it hasn't flown since. Has OJA been retired yet?

    • @luxman13w
      @luxman13w  10 лет назад

      patmck2 OJL is next on the list to go. It only has one or two sectors to go.

    • @patmck2
      @patmck2 10 лет назад

      Thanks for that. I thought it was going to be OJA. It flew from SYD to NRT last night.

    • @luxman13w
      @luxman13w  10 лет назад

      patmck2 Can't say about OJA. It may be the last of the first lot of 747's to go, it could go after OJL. OJA is the flagship of the QF fleet as far as I'm concerned.
