Wife Said Shrubs Had To Go (Front Yard Shrub Removal W/ Ventrac 4520)

- My wife is redoing our landscaping and wants the holly shrubs gone. I used the Ventrac 4520P to pull them out. Huge thanks to @steiger256 who provided me the following tips regarding this task:
"Q: I used the Ventrac yesterday to rip out some landscaping. I left the tough cut on as I figured the weight forward would help when pulling shrubs with the receiver hitch. Is that logic right?
A: Extra weight on the front will help for traction. If you are tugging and jerking on shrubs I would lower the deck and then lift up on it just enough to keep the front caster wheels on the ground. It would help keep the front end from slamming down when the shrub let loose. Also when pulling stuff out like that using low range makes a huge difference. The tough cut on the front will help a lot though. You can also try lifting the deck all the way up and selecting weight transfer number 4 then lower it to float. That will give extra weight as well and then if it spins you can raise the deck up some. Keeping it lowered a bit just helps if you stop fast when the shrub lets go. Hope this helped."
It did, thanks so much! Unfortunately I was in high range the whole time, so lost some of the power I could have had. Good reminder for next time!
I started a @ventrac Owner's Group on Facebook, so if you are in the market for one of these machines you can ask any questions you need to and if you are a current owner you can give me some pointers and advice as I learn the ropes of this machine: / 485159326478163
Q: Why didn't you use a shovel like a real man? (This is actually a real comment I had on one of my community posts. I went to reply but the commenter removed it shortly after posting!)
A: If I have a machine that can do the work for me quicker, safer, and easier than a hand tool, there is no reason I am not using the machine! Now leave me alone and go cut your lawn with a pair of scissors like a real man. 😂

Brad I think you should speak with Pete of GCI Turf, he wouldn’t be without his Ventrac. He has got many uses for it! You are so lucky in your area that you don’t have to take the garden (yard) waste to the dump. Lots of love to you all have a great weekend. 😀💜🇬🇧🏴😀
Where can I get one?
The shrubs will dampen the house. It looks better with them gone
I went to your link and it doesn't seem to be working
I think the weight upfront is good it may keep you from doing a wheelie when pulling
That's what I was thinking. Didn't even know if wheelie was possible, but could help prevent.
@Copper Creek Cuts Lawn Care yes. They are absolutely possible. Take any attachment off the front, and then do it like you would any old zero turn
Nice machine. You are a very careful operator, so please remind all us fans out there to learn how to operate and respect machinery.
I enjoy your work and information. I'm looking forward to seeing the new landscaping plans. Happy Spring time, everyone!
You've got it, thank you!
Quick tip as someone who has used a truck to pull big shrubs out, make sure that the roots aren't tangled around sprinkler pipes or anything else that you don't want to come out with them, I ended up needing a whole new sprinkler set up for an entire zone.
Very good tips! Thanks!
Or a water pipe!
Great video!! Can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s all done! Video of the process would be awesome 🤩
I'll keep you updated! :)
You can always find a fun job for a Ventrac! Awesome work.
You don't have to look far, that is for sure! :D
Well, your experience went a whole lot better than mine. My small tractor could not pull my shrubs out. It kept spinning and burning my back tires. So I went to Home Depot and bought several of their larger pullies and used the bumper trailer hitch of my parked truck to create a four times block and tackle effect... That worked after I upsized the rope... But they are out now... Your project was interesting to watch... Thanks for sharing...
That was clever thinking on your part, good job!
I love watching your videos and others mowing!
Therapeutic, informative and addictive to watch!
The only thing that annoys me, is that I can’t actually smell the wonderful freshly cut grass when you are doing it!
Freshly cut grass, bread just out the oven and fresh coffee, fresh sheets on your bed that have been dried outside in a spring / summers day!
I don’t think there are any better than the above!
LOL I'll see if anyone has smellovision yet.
I know it sounds stupid, but it’s one of those basic, primeval smells that is just so soothing, I don’t think is the right word, but is just so fundamentally right!
Brad, you have the best lawn care channel on RUclips. There are some other good ones but this one wins my vote.
Thank you! Your $20 for saying that is on the way! :D
@@CopperCreekCuts
I knew I could trust you to pay up lol
I thought you were going to take them down with the tough cut. I am amazed that you tore them out with the ventrac. And I have one. Outstanding. I dare not let my wife see this.
LOL that would have been more fun, for sure. Forget her seeing the video, let's hope she never sees your comment! 😆
As for your son having a favorite stick I sympathize with that. When I was young my favorite set of random wood slats got burned and I was inconsolable.
Love the $30,000 winch with the ventrac logo on it!🤣
LOL I like that description!
"...6-9 inches of rain" I see what you did there 😆
Freudian slip? XD
Holly's
Taking them out is a good move.
YOU GOT A VENTRAC!!!!!!!!
Yeah!
I think its a good idea to have extra weight up in the front. It keeps you from picking up if the thing that your pulling is more stubborn then what your pulling it out with.
That's what I thought! I was wondering if the Ventrac had soo much traction it would just start walking up in the air :D
than
Congratulations!! Now the wife is happy.
1st step in a process! :D
I did the same thing a few months back and many people said I didn’t know what I was doing pulling with my John Deere 430. I am glad to see someone else used their mower/tractor for the same thing!
Those machines can do a lot more than what people think.
I feel like if I have the machine why not use it! :D
@@CopperCreekCuts totally agree with you!!
I needed this a few days ago ! That machine is goals mane I bet it’s so universal and clutch with all the different attachments !! 🤩🤩
I am hoping to show it off for a long time to come on the channel! Thanks for watching!
goals mane??
im impressed with its mighty shrub pulling power. impressive.
I just finished ripping out some hedges (dead for about a year) and the truck almost couldn’t do it. We had to cut most of the roots first and then finish with pulling out the stump with the truck.
That equipment is amazing.
Thank you for the feedback!
Good call on the weight on the front. Watching the shrubs pulled out one at a time was entertaining. Looks like a powerful little machine
Thanks for watching!
It looks like the homeowner (Self) was shrub crazy. It was a nice looking hedge, btw. The 4520P did a very nice job.
Haha, that was all the same landscaping we had when we bought the place almost a decade ago.
@@CopperCreekCuts Ten years' old shrubs are not too bad. The bushes and plants in my apartment complex are forty plus years' old, and they look worn out.
Great job it pulled the roots as well don't push your luck two at a time well done nice to see the boss sweeping up the way your talking you can see who wears the trousers in the house as she got a big stick lol
Thanks for watching and commenting!
That's cool that the city will pick up the brush. Here, it would stay there and you'd find a citation on it! haha! The Ventrac is a powerhouse. Thanks for the video. Good content.
LOL Yes, I am very thankful they pick it up regularly.
Omg that mini tractor is incredible!!
Ah the favorite stick. I once brought a stick back from a camping trip when I was around your son's age. I played with it often until it "disappeared". I think of that strick often.
Great content brother!
LOL Too funny! :D
That’s doing a fine job. So much easier than digging them out. I don’t want any bushes to keep trimmed in my landscape. I redid all of my landscaping when I turned 60. 5 1/2 years later I’m thankful I did. I can’t take care of all of that anymore, not and work the 70 hours a week I still work.
Sounds like a smart move to me!
That job only took an hour! Impressive! Most Impressive!
Thanks for watching!
I've typically used my truck winch to pull trees and shrubs. The mean woman I live with hasn't given in to me getting a Ventrac, YET. Anyway, I throw a moving blanket and even an old jacket on the winch cable to keep it from break free from what I'm pulling and whipping me or my truck. I like that the Ventrac doesn't rut up the yard when doing this. Nice.
Truck winch would have been awesome! Unfortunately there still would have been a lot of shrubs at the wrong angle for that to happen (unless you don't mind driving on the yard, I guess).
@@CopperCreekCuts They are nice but the Ventrac took care of the job much quicker. Another Tip: If you have a difficult bush/tree use a spare tire and place the strap/cable over it and then pull.
I remember having favorite sticks to play with, heck, even whole branches!
XD Those were the days!
Bye bye Holly! It is gratifying watching you take out that Holly with such ease. You have a lot of Holly shrubs too. Thank you for the video.
We did have a lot. We are trying to see more of the house to it looks fresher/bigger/something-er :)
@@CopperCreekCuts Sometimes the saying, "Less is more." Comes to mind.
Being able to see the house will allow for termite tunneling inspections too.
Great way to test out the new toy 😉👍
It sure is! :)
That’s really cool.
Some video of the machine that does your city pickup would actually be kind of neat to watch. In Boston we just put our yard waste in a separate trash barrel that you put a “Yard Waste” sticker on. They pick it up with a regular dump truck that has been designated for yard waste; it’s nothing special.
I will try to snag some, but honestly am usually gone when they come around. If you search "Peterson TL3 loader" or "TL3 Loader" you should be able to see the machine (but obviously not the specific units our city uses).
ruclips.net/video/erSes0gN5Do/видео.html example video - hope this is close to what they have
I have no idea what I thought I was going to see. Maybe someone tying a bunch of ropes to the back of a Tacoma and try to yank off those shrubs off and have the chassis disintegrate :D
LOL
cant wait to see you mow a big over grown field with it.
It's coming for next Friday's video!
Man that’s an awesome hunk of metal you got! Keep it up man and glad the channel is growing!
Thank you so much!
Damn man, what a beast! And the Ventrac is nice too, of course ;)
XD
Color me impressed! That tractor didn’t even grunt.
Solid unit!
Little machine sure has alot of torque to dish out for sure !
Thanks for watching!
Bless ur heart on buying something that u should not have bought
I can't wait to see the tough cut deck in action.
Next Friday's video!
@@CopperCreekCuts you could go back to that persons place you had to abandon the job on.
I’m just messing wit ya BUT you need some amber strobe lights on the side!🚨🚨
Nice! I will look into adding some!
I’m starting to really enjoy your show
Thank you!
If that rig is 4wd, the weight on the front will give the front wheels more traction.
Pulling low naturally increases the weight on the rear wheels, but that transfers it off the front, which gives more traction on the rear, but also reduces steering ability.
And if you have all wheel drive, you want to keep it even so that you get more traction, and spread it out so you don't tear up the turf.
If I'm not wrong, it is technically All Wheel Drive since there is always power to all the wheels. Thanks for the tips and feedback!
I’ve seen one of those “little Holley bushes” hold a full size tree trimming truck on a slope. They got some serious roots!
We are digging all the ones that are left!
It's like a mower & and a wheel loader had a child! I first saw these Ventrac beasts used on another channel related to brush clearing and it was insane the terrain the guys were taking them through and clearing with!
I have always been impressed with them and beyond happy to be able to showcase it on the channel. Next Friday I will have a mowing video coming out that you should get a kick out of.
I first saw it when Tractor time with Tim showcased it. Eventually they even showed it with lot of attachment options and work on it. It’s a versatile machine. Congratulations brad on a great tool. It should make your tough work easy
That thing is cool looking
The canopy takes it up a notch for my eyes. Also helps with Florida sun!
Great machines. I had one I used for the snow removal business for years. Blade ,blower and power broom. The broom was great for spring gravel clean up. Low side they are a brute
Thanks for the experience and feedback!
Can you please show the progress your wife does on redoing the landscaping and how she does it?
You've got it!
Hope you show the new landscaping when its done :)
I absolutely will!
I yanked similar bushes with a 2003 Ford Taurus.
Soil type affects results. (how much power you need to pull the bush)
Weight on the front when yanking the bushes helps with traction... so it's good.
Good feedback, thank you for sharing!
That's unbelievable. 5years ago I tried to pull up shrubs with a 3/4 ton diesel 4x4 in low lock and shrubs would not budge.
Those shrubs may have had more roots?
That was a good experiment on how to pull them out and how much at a time. The first row I was a little perplexed, they were nice...then you turned the corner and there were MORE? and another corner and MORE?? and ....so I came to sympathize with your wife in her re-landscaping.
Haha, they never stop
The mower is a good counter weight. I'd just till all those leaves into the soil, good compost!
Good tip, thanks!
Awesome machine!!
Limited experience speaking here, but I have to agree so far!
Nice job with that ventrac, I'm sure it saved you a lot of digging. We could use some of that rain Brad. 👍👍👍👍👍👍😉🇺🇸
I'll send some your way, we have plenty! :D
@@CopperCreekCuts 👍👍👍👍🤣
ngl seems strangely convenient to need to rip things out of the ground know that you have a ventrac hmmmm.... lol great vid love seeing the ventrac get put to use
I will forever be looking for ground-rippable objects now! :D
Just a safety thought. Does your tractor have a 12V power plug? If you are using your tractor mainly on a farm or rural property, it may not make much difference but if you use it in a residential area like this quite often, it may be wise to invest in an amber beacon light. If you get a strobe or LED (I prefer strobe myself), you can permanently mount it to the inside of your roll bar if not on the roof itself. Then when you are on the street or working on the curb, just plug it in.
No 12 volt plug, but stay tuned on the safety front! :D
Are you going to get a snowblower for it , you never know when a blizzard might hit northeast florida. You don't want to get caught unprepared 😊HAHAHA
LOL I like the way you think!
this thing sounds like it’s got a weak supercharger 💀great vid
Since it is a gas I don't think it has any supercharger :D
That Ventrac is known for pulling people's arms out of their socket when it gets upset! 🤣
LOL
That thing is a beast!
I have to agree so far.
Consider a pintle hitch for similar jobs. Instead of constantly unscrewing the pin to release the strap and screwing it back in, you lift the top of the pintle hitch, set the strap in, and lower the top.
Pintle hitch will definitely make it a lot easier and like you mentioned you don't have to keep unscrewing/ screwing the pin back in.
Good tip, thank you! I will look into one!
every job you do you will find accessories for your machine that will be useful. good job!
So much easier to both pull out the shrubs and to dispose of the mess. Wish our council would do that!
It makes a huge difference in tackling projects!
wetting/soaking the ground prior to pulling out shrubs/trees also ease's it
Thankfully mother nature did that, we came off a few days of rain before this job.
nice work!. I used the winch on my truck to remove mine!
Good thought leaving the weight up front keep all the wheels on the ground.
Thank you!
I’ll pray for ur wife. She needs it with u around lollll
Fastest deshrubbing job you've done. 😂😂😂
1. Good decision on the shrubs. I hate them. They look awful, really. I don't understand why people put them in. 2. You're way braver than I am with regard to that sprinkler being there. I would have chickened out. Past experience and all -- I've ripped up way too much stuff that's cost me a fortune! 3. I wish my city would pick stuff like that up on the street. Heck, I'd settle for timely trash pickup on the curb as is! Thanks for the video!!
It helps I already have the stuff to repair the irrigation, otherwise I might have been more leery of it! :)
My wife is really good at telling me how to do the yard.
Same here! :)
Much enjoyed!!
Thank you!
If the Ventrac has a PTO or another way to power a winch, you would have more options for pulling things out. The tractor doesn't need to move so you can block the wheels and lower the damage to whatever surface the tractor is on.
A strap at the plant with a snatch block gives you an easy 2 to 1 advantage. The wire can run through the snatch block and back to the tractor or you could run the other end to a dead anchor such as a truck/tree to halve the force on the tractor, reducing the chance the tractor will slide.
Great tips, thanks so much!
So how much fun did you have doing this because if I’m honest this looked like a lot of fun lol
Haha, it was fun for sure. I was still getting my sea legs with it but this was a nice, easy project to get started with.
This week on Lex Luthor Lawn Care... Seriously though were you concerned that maybe the roots had grown around the irrigation piping and there was the possibility of ripping out the sprinkler system? Th sandy soil of Florida probably helped. I don't know if'n you could do that with bushes rooted in Georgia clay!
We have clay, too, but you have to get a few feet down. Thanks for watching!
Call me crazy, but it looked like the 2nd shrub had been using the 1st's roots for extra stability; that one came out a lot faster. #3 likely had some root branches way down under the driveway, and that's why that one was so stubborn.
Good on you for saving your son's favorite stick from harm, tho! 😅
Hope whatever your wife plants in roots well and thrives~🌹🌳
You may be right about the shrubs, some were definitely easier than others.
As a Ventrac operator, I’d always go into low range for pulling bushes and steep hills. Having dual tires will help on steep inclines just beware of wet conditions.
Good tips, thanks!
Great video!! I couldn't tell if you were in high or low range. You get a lot more power in low range for pulling. The weight out front was a good idea.
Thank you for the tip! I covered it in the description, I completely forgot about high/low and was in high (you can KIND of tell by how fast I was driving to and from the street). Lesson learned for next time! Glad the deck out front was the way to go.
@@CopperCreekCuts just curious why you decided to go with the 4520P?
I love the new ventrac
Thanks!
@@CopperCreekCuts no problem brother
Make sure to get all the deeps roots! We had some bushes at my house and they grew back and it was a pain to get those roots deep enough out so they wouldn't grow back. (They were tearing up the siding on our house so they had to go)
Good tips, thank you!
I have two dead bushes to remove. Now I know how. I’ll borrow a three inch strap and pull them out with my dads antique Allis Chalmers mini tractor.
LOL You've got it right!
Ventrac is like a Swiss Army knife on wheels
Haha, love it!
Very good !!!
Thanks!
The one by the garage looked like you may have pulled some wires up?
You could’ve put the weight distribution lever all the way on. It’s so shiny lol
Wish you had shown after pics- the new landscape installed.
I wish the new landscape was installed! :D We are still working through it.
Good time to check your drainage, or set up something new, and any lines running under there. So when do we get a new animal art with your improved pressure washing skills??
I have never pulled out shrubs like that!
It is a pretty fun way! :D
I made a small fortune last year pulling dead shrubs in North Texas after out 100yr freeze. I would charge $25 to $45 per shrub and I could easily do 10 plus an hour. Use a 'kinetic' tow strap for best effect and low gear for maximum torque.
Good tip, I'll look into it!
With how heavy the ventrac is and how low that tow point was I don’t think you would be at any risk of pulling the front end up. These machines have all their weight down low by design for that hill stability. You can probably take the cutter off and be fine. But it’s not causing any issues with the increased length so just leave it on. No point doing more work.
Good points, thank you for the feedback.
Steep hills in Virginia would put a strain on it unless you're going straight up or down. At an angle would kick a few tires off the ground. I've flipped my trailer on hills twisting at the hitch trying to tote granite boulders.
😥 That’s me because a don’t have. Ventrac Congratulations on your purchase
Haha don't be sad!
If you have a rim or a tire you can put it up by the bush and put your strap over it and pull that way it will pull it straight up. It will also act like a pulley and give you a little more tugging power.
I'll remember that, thanks!
@@CopperCreekCuts it wont pull as much dirt up in with the root ball either
Wish i had that when i dug up some thuja bushes i got for free. did you consider giving the bushes away for free its a bit of a loss just throwing them away.
I offered to a few folks, but one issue is these roots spread so much that not a whole lot is left for a good replanting (at least in my opinion, I could be wrong as I didn't actually try to replant any, just my guess).
@@CopperCreekCuts yeah the mower did brutal work on the bushes.
Awesome job man
Thank you!
Ok.... Experience talking here.
If you are going to do this kind of thing on a regular basis then invest in a good stout chain with hooks at either end.
Straps are great for one offs, but they won't last and you have to keep them clean, in the mud and leaf mess like you had they will soon give up, chains will last a LOT longer. You also don't have to worry about stretching later.
I use chains with my mini-tractor here in the UK. MUCH better.
Also, yes.... Keep any forward weight on if you can, the more the better.
You may find that if you don't have any forward weight the front end will likely lift up on touch jobs, this can be very dangerous in some situations. Just remember to NOT allow the attachment to engage! B-)
This is also a job you should not do on muddy terrain, you will likely just churn it all up. ... Not that I have ever done that.... *AHEM*... Noooo ... B-)
Haha thank you for all the tips! I will say I don't have experience with chains and would be afraid of one slipping/smashing a window/popping my wife in the face (or me), so I may just still use straps for now (not saying you are wrong or straps are better, just that I am OK with them being a replaceable item versus working with chains for now).
@@CopperCreekCuts Hey, no stress!
You should always work with whatever is more comfortable for you. But iof you are using straps then make sure you check them regularly! B-)
That’s the baddest machine your blessed
Thank you!
I did the same thing to the shrubs at my house except i used a logging chain and a minivan.
Very nice!
Brad I really appreciated the video. If I could convince my wife for you to come pull my hedges I would . But she has some weird attachment to them. Hope she does not see this comment?!
LOL Save my number in case she ever changes her mind.
I did this on some huge azaleas in Georgia clay, but I used a 1980 Chevy Dually & did not think to try more than 1 at a time.
Very nice!
Weight on the front for a situation like this is good!
Good to know, thank you!
@@CopperCreekCuts I've had the front end off the ground already when I have a light attachment or no attachment up front. That's one of the main reasons I use the rarely seen "mid weight bar kit".
