Imagine being the mom that brings home buddy riches drumset to her son, who is obsessed with buddy rich, boss level shit.
Yep, that would be like my mom coming home and saying she ran into Ringo Starr at the grocery store and he asked if I'd like his drum set.
I saw Buddy in concert in St. Louis around 1968 - '69 and the drummer from the opening small band stayed on stage to the back right of Buddy so he could watch more closely. So between tunes Buddy turned to the guy and asked him if the snare he had used was a Dynasonic, he then turned back to the audience and said that this was drum talk between drummers. So he must have liked the Rogers Dynasonic snare. I still can't believe the great good fortune of the lady that was given that drum set, talk about being jealous.

Buddy only used FIBES drums for a few months in 1967, as well as TRIXON / VOX.
He did use Fibes snares, sneakily, for a lot longer..

It's funny how he never mentioned that Bob Grauso also made Buddy a Fibes snare with Rogers hardware on it to keep Rogers off his back during his endorsement. I also was pretty sure that the story with Donny, Jr. was that his dad made sure that tutoring Donny Jr. was part of the Slingerland deal with Buddy. Alot of history gets lost in translation over the years I guess.

You are absolutely right. Buddy played many different snare drums. But without a doubt the FIbes snare drum. Was the holy grail of snare drums. Buddy knew this and I agree with Buddy. FIbes snare drums the finest snares played by the finest drummer Buddy rich

The original drum Spurs is one of the reasons why I love the fibes drums from back in that era. I have a kit. That bass drum doesn't go anywhere. Kind of wish he used the original bass drum Spurs.

I still play on my Fibes set that was built for me by my drum teacher when he worked at the factory in the early 70's. It still looks and sounds awesome. It's covered in brushed brass and weighs a ton but looks beautiful with the chrome hardware.
Excellent video of this rare Buddy Rich drum set. Buddy only played the Fibes drumset for only 5 months in 1967,from August to December of 67. He did use the Fibes snare starting in late 1966 with his Rogers drums. You can see a video of Buddy on the Mike Douglas Show from March 1967 playing this Fibes snare with his Rogers drums. Buddy then played Vox drums from May to early August of 1967.He recorded the New One album with the Vox drums. Pictures of that studio recording are in the Super Drummer book that Whitney Balliett wrote. After Vox,Buddy played the Fibes drumset to the end of 1967. Then starting in January 1968,Buddy played Slingerland drums for the next 10 years.I knew Bob Grauso very well when he lived in Florida. Bob made these Fibes drums for Buddy and he told me some great stories. Bob would come to my Big Band concerts in Florida,and he was one of the greatest and nicest person I ever meet. He gave me one of his Fibes snare drums and signed it for me. So nice to see this Fibes drumset again and have the great Donny Osborne Jr. play on them.
Thanks for mentioning Vox. No one ever talks about Buddy playing those. But I remember very specifically Buddy on the Tonight Show in summer 1966 telling guest host Sammy Davis, Jr. that he was playing Vox drums. Whatever happened to that brand?
Like I said,Buddy played Vox drums for only 4 months from May to August of 1967. The Trixon Music Company of Germany made the drums under the American name of Vox. Vox drums and Trixon went out of business in the 1970`s because of all the Japanese drums that were selling so much better in the world market.
Hey Ken. I vouch for your story. I also saw Buddy playing these Fibes Drums on the Mike Douglas Show. I was amazed. Never saw chrome drums before. I have a signed letter from Bob Grauso, thanking me for my interest in FIbes, after requesting a catalog. He definitely gave the personal touch. One of my Rock drummer heroes, Spencer Dryden of Jefferson Airplane, endorsed Fibes and can be seen playing them at Woodstock. Fibes were and are great drums. Fibes also made great drumsticks. I have 10 pairs still in the orig. plastic bags. Not sure who supplied the wood or tooling, but great sticks.
It was an honor for me to know Bob Grauso,the founder of Fibes Drums. He gave me one of his Fibes snare drums and being the great person he was,sighed the inside shell for me. You have some very rare Fibes sticks! I have a stick collection that I have put on RUclips you can check out.
I was introduced to Fibes through Billy Cobham / Mahavishnu era.
Never knew Buddy Rich even used them.
Always thought he was a Slingerland kind of guy.

Donn, great video and to be able to see these drums up close. And on top of it to have Don Osborne play.Drums look great. People dont realize first the age of the drums but the history around them. Combined with the fibes snare drum story throughout Buddys career. The fact that two drums are added due to loss of the original drums shouldnt take away from this set. Your either a Buddy fan or not. Love everything he touched. And I have some items of his. Joe

I remember reading in md mag.. he said some co was complaining about him playing the fibes snare so he said do you have a snare that sounds as good as this and they said no so he said then ill play this.

I respect all the great jazz master drummers of the past and enjoy hearing vintage kits and cymbals being used, not just snapped up as investments by old farts who can't play them. My personal fave of this jazz era is Joe Morello and the kit he has played to perfection, there are loads of great live b+w performances with Dave Brubeck to learn from.

23 .I still wonder where did these heavy players come from.So many I asked Buddy for an autograph with a Polaroid Instant Camera. At a hotel here in California ,A ballroom. I asked if he had drum c clinics.Stupid me!He said hell no kid! I don't have time for that.He said you got a pin kid,I said no but I'll get one.I made him totally laugh at surprised by my brought him up.I went all the way across the hotel ballroom to get a pen. I was afraid of him a great night for me I was studying funk and soul beats then.but swing and jazz was what I enjoyed in those years. Mike

Saw him play on this set at Lennie's on the Turnpike in West Peabody, Mass way back when I was in college. Asked somebody in the band where to obtain a similar set. I remember him saying that they were being handled by Henry? Adler. Anybody weigh in on this?
Very interesting. Recognize the Fibes lugs..I have two Corder brand marching snare drums from (I think) 1980's vintage they have the same lug design. Corder bought out Fibes some years ago and now I believe Corder is gone. Corder dropped the fiberglass shells and used wood shells but kept the same lug design. I think Pearl experimented with fiberglass drum shells also some years ago?

If thats a replacement 13" tom that they located years later, How did they find one with a diamond "clip" mount? did they plug holes in an original fibes tom somehow?
Fibes became Corder Drum Company later on..I have two Corder marching snare drums and they used the same Fibes design lugs but the shells are wood not fiberglass. I believe Fibes was back in business out of Texas some years ago are they still in business? The Corder marching drums I have are excellent quality they weigh a ton though.
One of the best drummers in the world. But I have developed my own way of playing, but I still need to improve , esp playing on you tube I have to be good, that's why I look up to him and others.

I had heard the history of this drum set before, pretty much as explained in this vid, with the missing toms being replaced. But I thought Buddy's original Fibes snare was in the possession of Steve Maxwell of Maxwell Vintage Drums and kept at his Chicago store. (Loved the interview with Donny Osborne by the way, and enjoyed hearing him play.)
Thanks so much for the history, I love this sort of stuff. I once made the purchase for a friend of a pair of bongos with fiberglass shells; what a beautiful sound they made, which brings me to the point that I had the chance of purchasing a fiberglass snare drum shell from eBay for $15.00 plus a few bucks for shipping. I still want to kick myself for passing up that deal. I'd have had to save up a bit for the hardware, but I'd have had a beautiful sounding drum. Thanks again for the history lesson ... :-)
A lot of drummers who had the early Fibes drums also swapped out the mounts and other hardware. Spencer Dryden had a Rogers Swiv-O-Matic tom holder for his rack tom, and Rogers spurs. The CF Martin era Fibes started with the ball and socket type tom mounts, like Gretsch had briefly. Bob Grauso was a true innovator.
Uff that kit looks good reminds me of the john bohnam one, tho it would sound good with paiste 505

I always thought Buddy used Rogers from 1960-66, then Fibes and Trixon/Vox in 1967.
He liked Fibes snares, but not the rest of the drums.
I noticed fairly recently that this remarkable set was listed on Ebay for $29K..but..after checking, I see they are no longer listed. Did you sell them Donn or are you keeping them for display in your store?

Great-looking kit. Would love to see a 26" kick on it, though. Geez, I can't even remember the last time I was in Bellevue. 1996-'97? Definitely need to get back over there to scope out all the merchandise!

My dad was a cop there in the '80's (and in Everett in the '70's) and recently returned to the region after 15 or so years in AZ and tells me the same thing about both. Haven't seen either for myself, though. Apparently downtown Bellevue has gone vertical from what I've read/seen online.
Bellevue has totally become a mini Seattle. I live north of bellevue a few miles and if you get on the freeway all the signs point to bellevue and you can see it from like a mile away, which I bet is totally different than it was a few decades ago (I've only heard how it was I'm pretty young)

Thanks for the story, but Buddy was finished with Fibes by 1967. Casino's didn't come to Atlantic City until 1978.

After finishing with Ludwig , in my opinion , Buddy should have gotten this Fibes kit ..the Radio Kings didn't do it for me ..sorry ...and I'm one of Buddy's biggest fans ..!

He did not. He quit James in '66, when he still played Rogers.
Fibes didnt even make their own tom mount or spurs or floor tom legs in 1967!! They used the Meazzi stuff on most of the kits at that point. So to say Buddy didnt "like" the stock fibes hardware is silly

The fiberglass snare worked but the Fibes fiberglass kit drums were bad...they lacked density/weight despite being thick.

Thank you for NOT showing us a China-made, "Buddy Rich Drum Co" drumkit from the mid 2000's and claim it was one of the kits Buddy owned/played like David Frangioni did in his Crash Drumkit book.

I also had a lovely relationship with Buddy , it started in 1970 and ended when he died . to this day he is constantly on my mind .
What Donny says is so true ....with me Buddy was always respectful , kind , generous and fabulous company .

It's 100% true William; I'm 62, and I remember seeing Buddy play these drums on the old Mike Douglas show. I was a Rogers freak and Buddy was endorsing Rogers when I first became aware of him. Then, he switched to Slingerland. I remember seeing these chrome drums and was like "Whaaa???". Never ever saw a set of chrome drums before until then. This was like 1966/67...Donnie Osborne is kind enough not mention his Dad hit the roof when Buddy started playing these drums. The photo of Buddy on the cover of his album "Live At Ronnie Scott's" shows Buddy playing his Slingerland set, but using the FIbes chrome snare drum. Don Osborne Sr. was NOT happy. And what Donnie said is true. I met Buddy twice, got his autograph twice and had him sign a vintage MOP Slingerland snare drum just like he played. I still had the calf head on it. Buddy was a really nice guy. Don't believe the bad stuff. He had his moments like we all do. He was his harshest critic. Hope this clears things up.

@@Lewy3958 never met Buddy but I did see him in concert on the UK tours back in the day, however John I study Buddy's playing, 50 years on love to play along to some of the charts, Its though playing along I feel I've got to know him what he was about and of course the genius he was on the kit god bless him

It's actually the 4 drums that were owned by Buddy. So yes, a drum set owned by Buddy Rich. The snare was also his so not really sure where the discrepancy is for you...
+Cole Paramore One floor tom and the mouthed tom are not original to Buddy. They were lost and replaced after they were out of Buddy's possession. He never owned them or played them. Go to 3:20 on the video and he tells you exactly that. So the only drums here actually owned and used by Buddy are the snare, bass and one floor tom. So if this is a 5 piece set, and 2 of the drums are non-original replacements never used by Buddy, how is this a 4 piece set owned by Buddy? Discrepancy?

Donny is the one that should be the leader and drummer for the current Buddy Rich Big Band instead of Gregg Potter. With his relationship with Buddy and his incredible drumming skill's it should be the obvious choice but with Cathy and Gregg being together not much of a chance.
Buddy's band should have been laid to rest with him. Without Buddy Rich, there is no Buddy Rich Band. Buddy left his legacy. No one can top him, especially some pounder who looks like he has a dead skunk on his head.
I agree, but it is what it is. To those who say there shouldn't be a Buddy Rich Big Band, well, that kinda rules out all the incarnations of Count Basie's band, eh? C'mon...lighten up. Same with Tommy Dorsey, Harry James...people want the SOUND and the memories. Also...Donny Osborne is a helluva drummer. Yes, he had private lessons with Buddy, but he had the talent to begin with. I am so sick of so-called Buddy Rich "purists" hating on Donny Osborne and Butch Miles. If you are better or more talented than these truly nice guys, then POST YOUR VIDEOS OF YOU PLAYING. Or STFU. I saw Donny playing with the late Mel Torme several years before Mel's passing. He was amazing. Mel could've picked anybody to accompany him, but he chose Donny. Enough said.
