Honestly once you learn the game, you can probably finish the whole thing in one sitting. I suck at the game but I can up to the lord vessel in under 4 hours. The rest of the game takes about 5. That’s still around 9 hours but I also explore a lot and do optional content. Im sure someone more skilled than me could easily finish the main quest in one sitting.

Just gonna say it, the opening cutscene with an upclose of the knight helmet the remaster looks awful. All the detail is missing from the metal, it looks way too flat like it's DSII again for some reason.
I swear the studio that did this remaster didn't pay that much attention to the details like that. It looks awful because it is clean, while in the original it is wear down and scratched.

The dock gives it mildly comparable results to other competitors, but it's still only a portable if you decide to buy it without the dock, as you can now do thanks to that aforesaid option and with the Switch being region-free, you just set the language to English and it's no different than if you had bought it outside of Japan.

Using the argument that you can purchase it (in Japan) without a dock, when literally 99% of sales are with a dock, is completely dumb. Just because you have that option doesn't make it solely a portable console. It's your own damn choice in that case.

yes but it runs like shit even on the XO X it drops to the like 15 FPS at times.. also if you own the orignal Steam version you can still download it, it's just not available to buy, you can probably still get codes via many other sites.
Counterpoint Gaming it was still considered one of the best games of all time when it had poor performance in some areas, which is why as someone who has still never played it but fell in love with Bloodborne and DSIII is anxiously awaiting the Switch version over console/PC version

It doesn't matter what platform you have. You can enjoy your games. My opinion on these two consoles, if you want great single play games where it come to exclusives, the PS4/PS4 Pro is where its at. But if you're not much of a single player guy and enjoy more online game than single players, get you an X1/X1X. But most important, go where your friends are at and which controller feels more comfortable in your hands. Either way, your choice is never wrong. All PS4, Xbox and PC are great platforms. Some people just have different opinion on what they like. Don't let these ignorant, selfish, and idiotic fanboys try to tell you otherwise!

It honestly depends on what you want to do with Dark Souls and how long you intend on playing. If you are a single player gamer then it doesn't really matter, but if you like to play online and want to do it for a long time then you can't argue with the size of the PS4 community. It is something ridiculous like PS4 players outnumbering other platforms 10 to 1. It guarantees it will still be active long after the hype dies.

@Digital Foundry Now that the game has had several updates on all consoles and the PC, can you tell us if this has improved the boss fight with Sif the Wolf on PS4, or if it has changed anything on any consoles?
I love this remaster. But the Sif alternative scene seems to be much worse than the original one. I decided to trigger it by going into the former DLC content, then yesterday I finally faced Sif, and I was excited because I had never triggered the scene and I was going to see it by my own merit, but the fps dropped hard and even the video and audio got disynchronized before the battle starts. It was dissapointing. Also, there is always an fps drop when you take the elevator from the Shrine to the Burg (barely noticeable by a second). My console is a slim PS4.
As someone who suffered playing this game on Xbox 360, I can really appreciate this remaster on my Xbox One X

If you don't have a PC this is fine - if you're console only you're getting a jump from 720p 30fps to 1080p 60fps/4K 60(ish) fps - it's a massive upgrade even jumping from 30-60. If people expected that for free it's ridiculous.
Rel Soul it is not lazy, because they maintain the 60fps lock on xbox one x... Dynamic resolution is not always perfect.. So 60fps at 1800p is the best solution...its a shame that xbox one and xbox one s is very very underpowered over base ps4...

I'm 6 years late but I paused this just about to say the exact same thing.
The analysis between PS and XB makes sense as competing platforms but it would've at least been nice to hear about traits of the Switch version which also has the most unique story.

This version is not coming to Switch. So yes this version of the remaster was tested on ALL consoles it was released on. The Switch version of the game is an entirely different project.

To everybody complaining: this game ran at 1024*768 and dropped to as low as 10fps on ps3. Compare that with Pro and X.

The only time I've "noticed" framerate dips while playing on my PS4 Pro is while riding the elevator from Firelink to the Undead Church. It stutters every time it reaches the top. It doesn't do this when going down. Other than that I've enjoyed returning to Lordran and will continue to do so. :)

I finished DS1 the first time on a laptop avg. 25-30 fps. So all this fighting over 1-3 fps drops is really funny to me.
well the problem is that in the remaster the game speed is tied to the framerate, so that means when you are in a boss fight and the framerate fluctuates, the game randomly gets faster or slower.

As someone who has the xbox 360 version and played that one the most, a comparision shows that the original looked like garbage even compared to the least enhanced version of ds remastered which is the switch version. The ps4 pro version is the best one I've played when it comes to framerate and visuals.

The graphics in dark souls 1 are better than dark souls 2 and 3. They went downhill. The hyper-realistic/painterly style of the first looks better. Dark souls 2 looks cartoony and cel-shaded like the darkness 2 and dark souls 3 looks like that unlimited detail graphics demo. Havent seen the remaster. Lighting looks nice and textures but colours look cartoony again.
Dark Souls also has better sound and animation! With big weapons they are truly heavy with how your character handles it and how it sounds when used. Dark Souls 3 didn't payed attention to that. Try to compare the Demon's Greataxe from DS with the Dragonslayer Greataxe from DS3 and see which looks and sounds heavier!
Dark Souls 1 has my favorite artstyle out of all of the games, but I think some areas in the sequels fit more closely with the artstyle. DS3 looks sad and grey, which makes the areas like Irythill more interesting. DS2's DLC locations all looked cool and distinct, even though the artstyles and quality of textures conflicted to create a kind of asset-flip vibe. DS1 just feels like what Demon's Souls wanted to look like, and the remaster added the best magic effects of the trilogy.
No one cares. This is the shittiest port ever. Especially for full god damn price.

I will say that I do find it a little bit disappointing that it just looks like an upscaled DS1, even on the Series X.
I only really got the idea to look up this video because I've been playing the game again and I thought I'd push the Series X I own a little bit harder by getting the remastered (since I've only played that on the Switch). I was expecting a lot more in terms of improvements than what was given, especially given the scale of the Demon Souls remaster that PS5 got. I do hope that we get a true remake of Dark Souls someday, I would be so happy to see Solaire in true 4K goodness, and with the 3060-equal powers of the PS5 and XSX, I'd imagine we'd get some truly beautiful improvements to what was already a beautiful game back in the 360 and PS3 days.
I got it on PC and its like playing a patched version of the original with better magic/fire effects. Its fun to play it after so many years and easily stomp enemies who drove me up the wall the first time around (like the Black Knight on the top of the Tower near the Wyvern Bridge early in the game, and the Capra Demon who holds the depths Key). I have also 'farmed' all the Black Knight and Titanite Demon weapons/shields early, and can pretty much roll over all the bosses. Just killed the Stray Demon in the Undead Asylum (on my return there) for a very early Titanite Slab. Lol.
Why would you want new textures? Lol. That would ruin it! It's a remaster. All we need is a higher resolution. Everyone's happy, and it's cheaper for developers.

Who Cares about 4k, I'll take a locked 1080p or 1440p at 60 fps upscaled to 4k on my tv any day. Spoiled with my PC, 30 fps makes me feel nauseous, especially if there are frame pacing issues like Blood Borne has; makes me feel sick. 🙄

Walther Penne ok, thanks for letting me know. Really it's not Important to take into account the fact that it has a dock, it connects to TV and it has better performance than on hand-held *mode, and that in the console mode it doesn't work as hand-held.
why didn't they just supersample the base ps4 from like 1200p if the xbox one can do 1080p and why not do 2160p on One X if the PS4 pro can do 1800p. It's like they've completely ignored the actual graphical horsepower of the PS4 and One X in order to match the other console for whatever reason.
Remasters are only good for a cash grab by devs. Make something new and stop milking your past accomplishments
