God damn. Great work Joe. I just interviewed Rich a few weeks ago. A fascinating guy in his own right. I love your work Joe. Who love to interview you about your work too.
Rich is a trooper! Glad you spoke to him. Happy to talk one day in the future but I’m not that interesting - I’m trying to bring the stories of other people doing the PoW!
What a great video, as a peruvian I didn't even know bitcoin was used in this way. This is a great resource that should be more popular in peru as there are many phone thefts everywhere.
Excellent film Joe & co, well done for the investment and all the hard work. We need more of these short documentaries circulating amongst the general public to pique curiosity and educate with real world applications that are easy to understand.

They don’t transact on chain.. how could they afford to? Most use custodial lightning wallets and 90% don’t save money. Peru does not have a culture of savings at all. Il explain more on this very soon.
@@JoeNakamotoI find it fascinating that they experience a custodial lightning wallet as being a safer place to store money than cash. And in their environment it may very well be ! Nonetheless, I would wish for them that they find a way to save their funds on chain and keep their (encrypted) keys at least with the cloud provider of their smartphones.
me too but when you hear their testimonials it makes a lot of sense. Bear in mind that 90% of the people there don't save (yet) - it's mostly MoE. More on this topic very soon!
No haha not used here at all. I personally use Phoenix wallet, coincorner for animations and Wallet of Satoshi to show off my ring. In Carabayllo the internet sucks… so it was Blink Wallet
@@JoeNakamoto should be the main education Motiv does before introducing btc into their economy, no? BTC is superior money because it is open to all (permissionless), can't be debased/printed (no inflation theft), cant be confiscated if you self-custody, and can't be censored (p2p)
Not sure what you mean dude. It’s not my place to tell Motiv what to do and what to teach. I know bitcoin is superior money but my plan was to see what they’re doing, investigate and report on it.
Yes it’s mostly Blink wallet - the bitcoin beach wallet. Good luck trying to use Phoenix or Zeus there. Spoiler alert; you can’t. The internet is too patchy.

@@JoeNakamotoNo need to explain yourself when you go outside your own country you realize you get stereotyped especially in areas with ignorance. You just pointed out the obvious which they are probably doing to you on a daily.
Perspective. Bitcoin on a phone is 100x times safer than bitcoin as cash in hand. Lots of these people are unbanked. There was no bank or ATM for 15 miles. Theft is common. Even if someone steals your phone they would have to know the pin or thumbprint to move the bitcoin depending on what security the app or wallet has. Therefore the victims could get new phones and restore wallets. It’s a huge step forward in terms of security. I’ve seen how this plays out firsthand with a waitress who was robbed in cuba - she thought the theief had also stolen her btc - she restored the wallet and the btc was still there. frankly it’s marvellous
They have to get into your phone and your wallet. I don't know about you, but even if someone stole my phone and somehow new my password, they still wouldn't get into my online banking or wallet as im intentionally not logged into them. Are you permanently logged into your financial accounts on your phone? Someone who cares enough about security to the degree to use bitcoin would surely know that being permanently logged in is not secure.
This is who Satoshi made Bitcoin for.

What kind of lightening app do the people in Carabayllo use? 🙏
The majority used Blink Wallet (formerly Bitcoin Beach)
@@JoeNakamoto Thank you!

Very intriguing... Bitcoin for plebs!
Has all commerce stopped now that the on chain fees make using it impossible?
It’s all lightning so it’s unaffected⚡️
Joe, do you have Orgel's lightning address? I've only recently started using Lightning myself but I'd like to send him a few sats
