- From Netflix and RUclips to AMC, CNBC Marathon explores the future of entertainment.
Over the past 25 years, Netflix revolutionized the film and television industry. The company amassed over 220 million subscribers across 190 countries, billions of hours watched for show Stranger Things and racked in 226 award wins. However, in 2022, things began looking rather different for the storied streamer while fighting an uphill battle to remain relevant in the streaming wars. In Q2 of 2022, Netflix lost nearly 1 million subscribers as rival Disney+ added roughly 14 million new subscribers.
Movie theaters across the U.S. and worldwide were dealt a massive blow during the pandemic. The domestic box office numbers plummeted from 2019’s box office of $11.2 billion to $3.8 billion in 2021. As for AMC Entertainment, the pandemic was chaotic. The theater company was virtually out of cash and nearly bankrupt, yet the 2021 “APE meme-stock” movement possibly saved the company.
And with more than 500 hours of video uploaded every minute and over 1 billion hours watched every day, Google’s RUclips is the world’s second largest search engine. And its meteoric growth hasn’t subsided, over 2 billion users visit the site every month. CNBC takes a look at how the video platform has changed over the past 15 years and if it can stay on top.

One huge thing that RUclips has that isn't mentioned in the video is the comment section! It's a great way to hear other people's experience/opinion. I almost always read the comment section after watching something I like.
One problem that RUclips has is you could bookmark a video to watch later on for it to be deleted or banned

But if you want to watch some series, a movie or whatever, you van forget RUclips. There's just limited (whole) content on RUclips.
I Watch 32 hours of RUclips each week. Guessing you’ve got premium too, couldn’t imagine not having premium and having to sit through the ads
I watched DW & France 24 both in English, there was hardly any ads during a typical 45 minutes travel documentary. Maybe advertiser are not sure which country's products to target 😅

RUclips is a juggernaut is because that platform allowed anyone in the world to make their own content and have their own opinions, and also get rich off of it.

Funny that we're actually watching this on RUclips... There's no doubt who's winning the streaming war😅
I still remember watching my first show on Netflix, House of Cards, and I was thinking I could get used to watching multiple episodes all in one day. I won’t be surprised if there’s a movie or miniseries about the origins of Netflix soon
The only audience for that movie is boomers who remember content before streaming.

yeah they will be back. Netflix still offer the most bang for the bucks entertainment wise after youtube.
Yet they still have more than 220 million subscribers worldwide
@@enadegheeghaghe6369 Yes, but the idea was to get MORE subscribers when password sharing is no longer possible. In Spain that did not work.
@@skyscraperfan at least people stealing content will have to look elsewhere
@@enadegheeghaghe6369 the f you mean "stealing"? You do realise that people don't have infinite money to spend on all of the services that demand subscriptions nowadays? And if doesn't make financial sense for the people to pay for the service then they will simply stop using it. They may or may not pirate it afterwards, but for the company it won't matter, because they will have lost these subscribers already, and it the service is a bargain again, they won't regain them.
RUclips literally has unlimited amount of content with almost zero production responsibilities.
My mom, dad AND grandmom all primarily watch RUclips now. I never thought I’d see that happen. RUclips creators are the watchers as well. We’re creating our own entertainment.
if its one thing I love about RUclips is the longer videos, I love watching long videos on good content. this is good content, and its long! lol
I was an assistant store manager at a Blockbuster Video for some years. Not only was it the best company that I ever worked for (I had amazing benefits and incredible healthcare coverage), but once Dish network bought us out everything went downhill. I really miss it. There was something special about walking around the video store with a date or your family looking for something to watch. I love the convenience of Netflix but it just isn't the same.
Well said
I loved the environment as a kid. However, having to rush to Blockbuster to turn in the movies was a pain. RUclips is much more convenient and WAAAY more content to watch.
Nostalgia is the only reason people think Blockbuster was great. It had more problems for consumers. Glad you enjoyed working there.
@jamess359 I paid a ton of late fees. Even when I worked there lol. But long before I worked there I loved when my parents took my siblings and I to rent a grown up movie and a kids movie. It was a big deal at our house. My kids loved renting video games. It was nice to try before you buy.
I remember going to Blockbuster on Friday night and there was nothing good left on the shelves. Then I started getting Netflix DVDs and could finally get the stuff I wanted. Then I switched to Netflix streaming. But Netflix slowly started losing their quality. Their originals used to be occasionally good and now they're hardly ever good. So I cancelled and now I just watch Hulu or Max or whatever, one a time, in rotation. I might stick with one for 1-3 months. By the time I'm done, a year has passed and the rotation begins again. Easy & cheap.
Same here, I loved picking up my kids on Friday and heading to Blockbuster and Hollywood Video to walk thru the movie selections and picking up snacks ❤
With all the streaming platform nowadays, it's time to bring back Limewire.
Limewire?
Also Napstar
Yeah I miss all the viruses on my computer. For those that don’t know what Limewire is it was a platform to download music and movies illegally mostly kind of sort of. It would be like going into a brothel and not wearing protection but for your computer.
Kickass Torrents😉😀
Well, if you aren't in the USA or EU you can stream any TV SHOW or movie from the past or as soon as it premieres in the States or UK for free. There are enough free streaming platforms for that.
The DVD Netflix home mailing ends September 2023. I dearly hope they offer the "extras" - special features such as director's commentary, behind-the-scenes, etc.
They still have that? WOW
Lmao, Yeah I didn't think they even still offered that service.
Very sad that films are not treated like art anymore. Now they’re called content…
Long-form YT content is great. Keep this up
💯
Netflix is a good product. They don't need to grow forever. Right now what they are doing works. They should aim to be profitable and become a dividend stock.
Edit: Only thing I am concerned about is lack of residuals to writers AND actors*.
Lol you still read? 😂😂😂😂😂😂
true
I don't think RUclips has to worry too much about TikTok anymore. A lot of countries are banning it outright from being used and distributed because it's felt by the various governments to be a national security threat from China. I personally, don't care for or use TikTok
The main appeal of streaming is no commercials, I pay extra for that because my time is more important. I simply want to watch content uninterrupted.
Theaters are really no longer relevant for me, I have my own home theater system and don't need to travel to pay overpriced fees for snacks. Streaming has really conditioned me to wait for content because there is plenty of content to stream as we rotate through the various streaming services on a monthly basis.
Streaming services are only getting better and it's easy to subscribe to a service 1-2 times a year (so we did Netflix in January and will subscribe again in July).
Tialian, I truly feel the same, having all in my house is so much better than going to theater pay wait to watch movie then get charged way too much for snack at home I buy lower cost snack and what I love and no waiting all available in my own home isn't it great to be alive in 2023 years we got it all.
I enjoy reading your comment.
We got to agree that there are at least 2 films a year that must be seen in the cinema. The rest...nah.
@@RoodeMenon there are certainly movies I'm excited to see, but I can wait. Maybe as one gets older there is less inclination to be first in line, I've learned to let the pawns go first.
@@Tialian yo ucall people pawn, your opinion is worthless, seeing a movie IN theater is miles more entertaining than just in your home
@@MrGoalie2012 I take it you haven't seen Xmen?
To each their own, I would take my home theater over a movie theater any day of the week. No annoying people ruining the show, I can pause whenever I want/need without missing anything (or rewind if I did miss something), and I can have whatever snacks I want without getting charged an arm and a leg. A fool and his money are soon parted.
I started watching RUclips in the pandemic, now I watch RUclips everyday. I love watching RUclips, reading comments and sometimes commenting myself.
Same!
Streaming and theaters just serve different needs. Theaters are for that big, overwhelming, immersive experience and for special experiences (be part of the Barbenheimer frenzy etc). That's why movies need to be expensive and have a lot of engrossing eye candy, whether they're about a toy come to life or about the creator of the atom bomb. Streaming is the day to day convenient entertainment when you're lolling on the couch and bored. They can both survive but don't expect them to overlap much.
Use to love booting up the 360 to watch Netflix with the homies
Imagine if Spotify and Netflix partnered up, take on the Giants
I MISS when people uploaded full movies for free. A lot of niche art films from past decades were discoverable that way. now its so hard to find certain films online, anywhere, for free.
Nobody doubts RUclips is an authentic Winner 🏆 🥇 🏅
29:30 As someone with a hit video... lol no. It doesn't matter how many millions of views you have on one video, nothing changes. You need a hit video every single week.
I have been a Netflix member since 2009 I still have it but I also have RUclips and Disney. What time to be alive.
"The Streaming Wars": 15 years, especially the last 5 years, and so much change.
They better figure out a way to pay actors, writers and creators because without them, they don’t exist.
RUclips is the king for VOD, period.

Netflix is a company that actually have production, making content, films. As well people told that salaries in Netflix way higher, I would say highest in the industry. RUclips is using someone else content. So it's comparing apples and oranges.
I use Netflix for its new content shows and Korean TV shows but RUclips has it's own content and relevant information about what I like .
I still use my parents netflix (still somehow works with password sharing) but i would never get it myself. Almost every show I used to watch on netflix is either bad now or moved to a different platform. Why would I ever pay for something i dont ever use and the movies and tv shows they have are horrible
I still enjoy the event of going to the theatres. That won't ever change. What will is going to a dirty theatre with bad customer service.
Netflix and YT killed cable network TV though. Most of the content on YT and Netflix is just better. I only need live TV for sports...that's it.
This site gave me a second career, almost out of nowhere. There's negatives to everything but there's no other site creating as many entrepreneurs as this one.
One reason of the decline of subscribers in netflix is the cancellation of great series/ shows like Orange is the new Black, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Santa Clarita Diet, The OA and the one that hit them all is the Sense8! It was phenomenal and a HUGE heartbreak for all of the fans around the world!
OitNB was great but the last two seasons sucked and the series was definitely not cancelled too soon. The rest, eh. Didn't care. Netflix makes so much garbage. Lately it's all garbage.
The quality on Netflix is not there. They just churn out these big budget things. And they cancel series without a proper ending so people aren’t going to bother any more
RUclips is my drug of choice, lol, then everything else comes after. I find myself watching movies on other streaming content on TV while still browsing RUclips on my phone 😅

Netflix is a standalone/independent company if I'm not wrong. RUclips on the other hand is owned by Alphabet, which makes it a problem irrespective of how much good content is available on it.

Love them both!
There no movie theaters, just places that sell over priced popcorn that happen to play movies. These movie theaters make something like 80% of there money on over priced snacks. Change this model so that the theaters and movie publishers get the benefits, not popcorn makers.
When I lived in Dallas area in the 90's, there was a discount theater 🎭 only play movies that are 3 months old. On Tuesday, the tickets were $0.50, family brought kids and had a good time because they made money on 🍿 and snacks. That was days I catch up on movies, only very few movies I have to see it on opening weekend like mission Impossible, and any Brad Pitt's movie 😅
Netflix and RUclips; having both or one of them is just enough to justify not having cable tv any more!
If you are a sport lover, you’re gonna need Disney for sure
Blacklist not making top 10 for Netflix most watched series? That's a bummer...however, I must say how impressed I am with Netflix and RUclips dethroning Blockbuster as one of the top streaming services of today. The latter is a breath of fresh air for the internet..
I recently canceled Netflix and submit RUclips. SO MUCH MORE VALUE. Everything from documents to education and entertainment is on RUclips.
The difference between the ad package and basic without ads is literally £2 it’s hardly a massive save
RUclips is like Google but the ads are too much . I was once catch up paying for youtube premium just to avoid it but that was too much money to spend. The cable price is far too expensive compared to philo that offers great channels but nothing still replace them yet. Netflix on the other hand is getting there been a subscriber for 7 years now and overtime the content has improved, there is not a week i don't watch something likeable on it. I tried other platforms like hbo max which is good, paramount seems to be getting ahead by offering live tv, movies etc..But in the end only the best wins and choices are always important.
I'm watching dis from youtube vanced now, no ads. I finally had enough of those scam ads about Biden giving out medical stimulus checks. The ads have random people stuffing their face 🤮 and its gross af and they won't let u block em for some reason 🤬

Sitting in a chair with my feet sticking to the floor, in a room that was too hot/too cold surrounded by coughing people and crying kids, unable to take a break to go to the bathroom or get food or drink was a horrible experience. I almost always got a headache and when a movie cost $10/person l stopped going.
Now l can sit in the comfort of my own home, eat a hot meal, drink a beer and pause, rewind and fast forward while watching my favorite movies. What’s not to love? I’m surprised anyone goes to the movies anymore.
Besides, most new movies are remakes, sequels and prequels from movies made 20-30 years ago. There’s nothing to go to the movies FOR!
I had Netflix for DVD rentals but never had an account for streaming.
Once you try RUclips premium, you can never go back to ads.
Amc movie 🍿🎥 theaters, Foreverrrrrr

RUclips is the ONLY streaming platform which has a viable Comments section.
Google has harnessed all youtube Comments into A.I. already and that data base is worth billions if not trillions.
The Comments sections are literally INFESTED with garbage bots, account impostors/scammers and spammers.
I also cannot stand the RUclips 'Shorts'. That's for Tik Tok people with the attention span of a flea. RUclips shoud stay in their own lane about that, and _improve_ their fancy algorithms to get rid of the spammy crap (since they don't seem to care about the direct reports they get about them, as the impostor links/accounts remain even months later). If they can close an account instantly re copyrights, or even for any reason at all, they can eliminate the scammy accounts.
netflix is becoming a tv standard with ads, i'm happy with apple tv+
The second stories narrator says theater really strangely
i watch youtube
i learn something new whereas netflix is missing content
I sure miss blockbuster . It was my favorite place to get videos
kinda confused 😕 is gala games, film and music going to be 3 separate tokens? I got into gala for the trifecta. Kinda scares me if I have to buy three different tokens after accumulating and holding gala for so long.
I don't agree that it's ok for yotube to delete channels for speaking our truth i think it's ok for us to have our own difference point of view truths question everything by thinking for ourselves if some think covid was planned and some think covid is real i think we all have the right to speak our truths think for ourselves or if some choose to not think for themselves too
The only thing I watch is RUclips. I hardly ever watch cable or any movies any more. It's time for it to have some serious competition, though, it's getting to be a monopoly!
Amazon Prime Video offers Top Gun Maverick...Nuff said
Офигеть... Такие заносы я вижу впервые...
RUclips is all I need
If only RUclips was less restrictive, it would be dominant.
Am i missing something? 1000 screens out of 42000 screens were closed? Thats not much at all, right ?
I love youtube I can watch my favorite videos and content creators 😊
I watch a lot of RUclips too, but obviously there's no real whole content on RUclips. Mostly bits and pieces here and there, unless it's news or some other things. I'm not gonna sign up for a bunch of services just to watch the shows I want to watch. There are a lot of things Netflix does not have, lots of things Disney does not have etc.
love Netflix its awesome and popular in India 🇮🇳☺️♥️.
Hotstar is the winner tho
@@lovemyself6441 they will lose.
Netflix is a loser in India.
Hi Debra! Here watching!
AMC is okay, it's not too popular in my city. only two in my city.
Regal/cineworld has more theaters in my city and their reward/subscription is a little better too
RUclips gave everybody a voice no matter who they were!
Between YT & TPB, can't imagine a need for anything else. Even just YT on its own there's more high quality interesting content here that I'd like to watch that I'll never have time to. Too bad for the gen pop they're too stupid to just hook a Win rig to their TVs & stop paying for anything but internet.
I'm surprised they didn't mention how TPB and other bittorrent sites also take a share of the audience.
That graph between Netflix and Disneys streaming service is highly distorted. A lot of it stems from Verizon giving their subscribers free Disney service number of paid subscribers would be different.
The only response Netflix got from me by offering a streaming service with ads for the same price l used to pay for without ads, along with not letting my kids use my password is for me to cancel Netflix, just like l cancelled my cable 20 years ago when it got crazy expensive.
Looks like I'll be watching RUclips and sailing the high seas for other content forever...
95% RUclips, 4% netflix and 1% Amazon.
Comes full circle because I’m watching this ON RUclips. 😂 And I pretty much ONLY watch RUclips.
I deleted Netflix. If my kids and I can’t watch on our own profiles simultaneously, then I don’t want the service.
